Question about J. Crew Matchstick Jeans

I was wondering if anyone has tried these? I am looking for some "skinny" jeans that will work with dresses and tunic length tops and can still be tucked into boots in the fall, but that are flattering on someone with an hourglass figure and short legs. I was wondering about the rise on the J. Crew matchstick jeans. All skinny jeans I've had in the past have had an ultra low rise and I don't like that. I need at least a 9" rise.

Thank you!

I think my big ol' booty causes most jeans to sit lower on me than they're supposed to, so for me these are low and I need to wear a longer length top for coverage. Keep in mind that I always seem to have this problem, so I am hardly the benchmark you're probably looking for. I think they're fine for most people. Before I got them, Angie had described them to me as mid-rise and that they ran slightly big. I find them pretty true to size though, maybe even a little snug. I just washed them so they are being laid out to dry right now, but once they're done drying I can measure the rise for you.

Thanks Maya, that would be helpful! :)

I had these on a few days ago. They have changed their fit. It's smaller than it was last season. Good for rectangles. It was a good fit on me. It worked for small pears and it will probably work for hours glasses. Whether you can tuck them depends on the size of your calves. They are straighter as opposed to ultra skinny. I’d say that a size 26 is about a size 0/2.

The Matchstick jean is a very nice jean, perfectly dark wash, nice denim, and a "just right" leg width. The rise, however, is definetly lower than 9 inches.

I have an hourglass figure and short legs too. I also hardly have a butt - I guess it's kinda flat... or these jeans just made my butt look flat!

If it's helpful for comparison, my measurements are height 5'0", 33-25-33, with 18 inch thighs. Like you, I like my rise to be around 9 inches. Part of this is because I don't like my mid-section; the other part is just the reality that the way my hips are built, anything lower than that, doesn't stay up. Because my hips kinda go straight down. I like to wear my pants at the belly button or just *slightly* below - which translates into a 9 inch rise.

My daughter, who wears the same size jeans as I do, loves the Matchstick jeans and looks really good in them. She (we) take a size 26 in this jean. But she is a pear with curvier hips and butt and tinier waist, and a perfectly toned mid-section who can get away with lower rises.

On me, these jeans just don't stay up!!I find where the rise hits me is just .... annoying. It's too low - hitting on a place on my hip that guarantees it's going to keep slipping down. I thought it might be the wrong size, but if I go down to a 25, the rise is even lower, and they are way too tight in the thigh.

Also, they end up bagging out terribly in the butt!! I have actually analyzed jeans and determined that the length of the back rise is just as important as the front rise, and these jeans have way too long of a back rise. What's more, the pockets are scaled to large for someone my size. The petite version may solve this, but I suspect that the rise would be even lower.

So basically they'll look okay for about an hour, then they bag out and slip down and look ridiculous on me. :-(

You can find higher rise skinny jeans. I have tried them on, but flaked and didn't buy them. I can't remember the brand now. It may have been JBrand.

OK, so I just took some measurements and they are probably too low for you, Ana. The rise is only about 8 inches...actually a less.

Shiny, it sounds like these jeans are just too big for you. You would probably need a 25 (if it existed). They fit me pretty well and I'm a 33-26-35. I find that the back rise isn't long enough, but that's because even though my hips are pretty small, most of those 35" are in my bum. I tried on a 27 in the store, but it felt big and I was afraid they would grow, so I erred on the size of snug. Now I wish I got the 27's instead because these jeans don't seem to grow at all.

I think they are too low, but I liked how they fit otherwise so I just make sure the top I'm wearing with them is long enough.

Oh, I guess I should add that my jeans are a short. I always assumed that just means it has a shorter inseam. Maybe the rise is shorter as well.

Okay, here is my recent experience...I recently purchased the clam diggers, which looked good on my petite pear shape. I liked them a lot so I bought the matchsticks. I needed a size larger (29 instead of 28) because apparently the skinnys have no elastic, while the claim diggers had 2%. I'm not sure if I love the matchsticks. Probably because I wish I was less pear shape - I have a curvy bum and meaty thighs. They are more straight legged than skinny. I will need to try it with different tops to see whether I will keep them.

Good to know Eva. I was hoping that they would fit the same. BUT, you are building a collection of tunics ( 2 cardis and a top) and you could wear those with them only. Just a thought.

Maya, that extra 2 inches in your hips (whether from butt or hips) probably makes all the difference! I bet they look adorable on you. I really did want those jeans to work for me... they look so cute on my daughter!

Eva - embrace the pear shape! I wish I was more of a pear. Sigh.

Those matchstick clamdiggers look fantastic on you, Eva. Remember how I raved about them last week! You are a very pretty pear that oozes style.

I love YLB! Everyone is so very supportive! Thank you Shiny and Angie. Angie, I will model the matchsticks for you and we can decide whether they stay.

My husband just laughed at my "meaty" thigh comment. What is a nice way to say it, I asked.

Shiny, your body sounds like it was made for slim/skinny fit jeans. After seeing your picture post, I'm sure there are plenty of other options out there that would look great on you.

I have to be honest and say these are a little tight around the thigh for me, but since I have to wear a long top anyway, it doesn't bother me. So Eva, I know EXACTLY what you mean. Although my matchsticks have 2% of something stretchy...I can't remember what. Well, whatever it is, you can barely feel it so I suppose it doesn't matter.

I think I'm going to swing by J Crew tomorrow and see if they have the boy fit jeans. I have a feeling "square through the hip" would be a better fit for me, especially now that they're in a straighter leg.

Thanks for all the info, everyone. It sounds like the rise is probably a little too low for me. I will keep searching though. I'd love to find some jeans that look great on me that aren't bootcut or trouser. Do you all think it's best to have 2 pairs of "skinny" jeans--one for flats/heels and one to tuck into boots? I'm thinking the boot pair would need to be really skinny to avoid folding over the fabric in the boot.

Ana, do you have a National Jeans Company near you? That's where I found my jeans. I went early in the day when I was the only customer in the store. And I told them I wanted higher-rise jeans - at least 9 inches. They were great - I had three salespeople bringing me jeans to try on. I just flaked about the skinny jeans (don't remember the brand) - I should've bought them but I feared I was too old for them, and now I'm kicking myself!!

But the good news is that there are tons of styles and choices now out there with higher rises!! So do try - if you don't have a NJC, go to a department store that offers a variety of jeans, early in the day, when you have time to try on many different pairs.

As for length, I was told by the salespeople that for skinny jeans you want to hem them for high heels, then you kinda just scrunch them up to wear with flats. Either way, the trend is to wear them on the long side. As for boots, a true skinny jean is nearly like a tight - very tight on the ankles, so minimal fabric.

I wear my ultra super skinny jeans with boots only. Sometimes I will wear them with tunics. Angie likes them on me but I hate hate hate my thighs, so I can't bring myself to wear them without some coverage. Wearing them with boots and a shorter top doesn't bother me, I guess because the boots add some weight at the bottom that balances out my thighs.

I prefer skinny jeans to scrunch at the end, but somehow that never seems to work for me. Instead of scrunching at the bottom, they always seem to scrunch around my knees and it looks sloppy, so I just wear them straight.

Thanks for the reply, Shiny! Alas, no NJC anywhere within a 600 mile radius. We do have a Nordstrom here, so I will definitely check out the Citizens there. I'll look around for higher rise skinny jeans as well. Looks like I'll be purchasing 2 pairs, one for heels/flats, and one for boots.

Ana, you can have loads of skinny jeans for different purposes. I’d substitute “shapely” or “curvy” for meaty, Eva.

Maya, please don’t dislike your thighs. You are tiny and look great in skinny jeans however you wear them. I was not the only one that offered this unanimous comment!

I too find jcrew bottoms to be all over the map. I was looking for some white skinnies so I went to jcrew to try them on. They only had the dark wash which I tried and 27 was the clear winner. So I ordered them online in white and also the cropped matchsticks (clamdiggers) in the dark wash. Both were too large and the cropped ones were definitely more stretchy and therefore slightly bigger so I went down to the 26. In general I find the seats of jcrew bottoms to be a bit roomy and they do grow a bit although my white matchsticks are pretty stiff through the thigh. Also, I'd probably have to hem them right at the ankle and then maybe I could tuck them.

Ana, I recommend DKNY skinnies for boots. I bought the 2 and they do grow a lot but I found them to be ultra skinny through the leg for boots (like leggings almost) and I only wear them with tunic length tops so the growth in the hips is hidden. Plus they are at least a 9" rise and $50.

Ladies, I also have "curvy" thighs and after reading this blog I wouldn't call them anything else! In fact, I like them now. When I was younger I did not like them at all, but after going through my first pregnancy something in my brain changed (because my thighs certainly did not) and I started seeing them in an attractive light. Now, there remain plenty of styles that do not flatter them like tops that are the wrong length but a great pair of jeans looks great. My husband has never complained either.

I WISH that the industry would step up the quality of the denim on DKNY sohos. They are a superb fit on curvier body types but the denim grows after an hour. You need to go down two sizes from what you’d normally wear to compensate. I suppose if they stepped up the denim quality, they’d lose their price point of $50. Sigh..

I LOVE that you love your thighs, Patience. This is stylish.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Angie. You have the right attitude, Patience. I'm just being fussy.

What annoys me about the Soho jean is not that it grows, but that it starts at a (very large) size 2. If they're going to skimp on the quality and give it such a generous fit and a lot of stretch, why can't they go down to a 0? Even a 00 isn't asking too much. I looooved the rise on those jeans and they looked smashing on me for about a day. Even though I line dried them and took such good care of them, they still grew to the point of being unwearable, and there was no way to size down. Unfortunately as far as denim goes, you do seem to get what you pay for.

Posted 1 year ago

I just made that mistake myself with the Sohos - I got a new pair, but didn't go a size down. I still enjoy wearing them (the cut is soo good), but can see how it gets worse after the first day of wear.
Has anyone found a jeans style with a very similiar fit to the DKNY Soho? I'm willing to pay a good price... just love the cut, it's the best fitting jeans (on day 1, at least :-)) I've had in a long time.

Posted 1 year ago

I've actually considered getting my Sohos altered to have the waist and hip taken in because they actually are fine through the leg. I just don't know if the amount they'd have to take in would make them look funny. I might end up doing it since I wear them with tunics anyway.

Where do you get Sohos? Macy's?

Yup, Macy's.
