Question about denim jackets

Hi Everyone!

I know there was some discussion today on the blog about denim jackets and what works for which body type. I've been wondering the same thing lately. I've sort of had my eye out for one to wear over dresses, but I see a lot of the boxy "western" style ones and I don't think that would work for me. What should I (we) look for when purchasing a denim jacket? The same thing as a blazer? Is there a lot of choice when it comes to finding one (I've not had a lot of luck so far).

I've been on the hunt for a denim or canvas type of jacket too. I don't want it to look dressy or like a blazer...I want it to look like a true denim jacket--but that flatters me....which means, no chest pockets and well structured in the shoulders....

Count me in on the hunt for a structured denim jacket. I've been looking for more of a blazer style, but not a formal blazer. I'll dig around and try to find some I'd been eyeing...

Edit - here's a Michael Kors jacket, but it's not quite what I want but the structure is right, for me anyway

Thanks Dani! I've tried the MK jacket on and it looks good (I actually think it looks better in person than on the model). I'm just worried it's a bit conservative. I want to wear it over my white dress and my cream and orange dress (and any other light day dresses I get in the future) and I don't want it to be too predictable. But I'm not exactly sure what to look for that would be edgy or interesting. Hmm....

Count me in the hunt too. A good fitting cropped denim jacket for smart casual is at the top of my list. I want it for Angie's second look today with skirts and dresses. I also wondered about the traditional western fit. I think a one button blazer jacket would work, but with the button under the bust more at waist level than the MK jacket in order to give waist definition.

With a long cami or shirt peeking from underneath, could a short jacket also work with pants? A jacket is better for me than a cardi as a layering piece because time has given me a bit of an osteoporosis hump in spite of meds, calcium suppliments and weight bearing exercise. Woven fabric is better camouflage.

I'm also ISO a denim jacket. I have one from ATL, but it's...different. Not totally what I want. Will post a pic so y'all can tell me if it's a keeper.

I hear you ladies. A fab denim jacket is a lot harder to get than a pair of jeans. You will probably end up altering the denim jackets you find. I altered mine and I am never letting it go. It shall eventfully become someone’s vintage piece! It’s a traditional western style, but cropped, very dark, fitted and with stretch. That’s what you should look for if you’re not well endowed. Prop the collar and Bobs your uncle.

The MK denim blazer is outstanding. I’ve fitted that on a whole slew of body types and fashion personas and its great. But you have to wear empire lines well to look good in it.

The trapeze jacket phase is slowing down ( still in fashion though). Let’s see if Autumn brings fitted denim jackets.

I have just found this at Anthropologie! It's a fitted blazer style with tiny ruffles! So Ana to me, but I could be wrong!

Ooh, Tanya and Nicole, both of those look promising! Thank you for posting those. I'll check them out soon. I will also wear my white "grecian" dress and try on the MK jacket again. The fit was really great, I'm just worried it will lack interest with what I have planned for it. I'll be sure to post pictures!

The one at Macy's may work for me. I'll have to check our local mall store. I like the simplicity. The Anthropologie jacket is very cute but broad shoulders would look enormous in it

Hmm, Joy, maybe you can go to a store and see what they have, and they can maybe call some other stores for you?

I'm not familiar with Arden. Is it a brand name that Nordie's or Macy's would carry or is it a store like Coldwater Creek?

Although I love some of the denim jackets, I was wondering if it was a poor idea to buy one when I wear jeans most days, the head-to-toe denim look not being a good one. What does everyone else think?

Arden B runs pretty small, almost like junior sizing. I am XS almost everywhere, and at Arden B half of the time I need S, and half XS.
