Pics of My First Month. Fav's, Descriptors?

I wanted to do a recap of my first month (my month and a day anniversary) and say thank you. I am just beginning my style journey and this forum has been a great place to start.

I'm hoping from this collection you can get to know me a little better -- and I can get feedback on the following:

Favorites (insight into silhouette)
Least favorites
Descriptors (sorry for those of you who don't like descriptors)
Anything your heart desires!

My sincere apologies for poor photography. I'm hoping I can find a better alternative.

I also want to introduce Fro (our wonderful older cat), Gracie and Henry (our 6 month old Maine Coon kittens). My DH and I both work from home with our furry kids by our sides.

AM, I only have time for a quick reply, so I'm just going with my favourite looks on you: 1, 3, 4, 7, 10, 14,15, 17 & 19.

I particularly like the outfits which incorporate a lighter colour near your face, such as 3, 4, 7, 14, and 17, and the grey and cream? sweaters, 10 & 17 are gorgeous on you.

Needless to say, your cats are beautiful.

First off, congratulations! Secondly, your fur-babies are beautiful, and don't they look happy? I guess it's not bad to live through winter if you can do it curled up in the warm all the time.

Third, I love your fun and practical coat collection.

It is hard to pick favourites here. For someone "just starting" on your journey, you seem to have some lovely pieces as well as a strong sense of your own style. I think Dramatic Classic fits you very well, FWIW, both in "Kibbe" terms and as an overall style descriptor.

I think my very favourites are: 6 (I love the moto ... even though it is a bit "tougher" than your overall persona based on these photos, it totally works as an iconic look). I also love 10, even though I know that was just a casual at-home look -- it is sleek on you and sophisticated. (And I might be biased because we are boot twins.) I also love 14 -- that long over short proportion is lovely on you.

It's hard to make out colours and textures here but it seems as if you have the makings of a great winter style.

I hope you'll take this in the spirit it was offered, and don't take the word of a random stranger on the Internet:

Favourites are tailored, black with white or grey accents (3,4,5,12,15)
I much prefer your long wool coat with the furry hat - very Dr Zhivago! - to the long puffer coat.
I think you look better in the cool grey than the warmer beige
Structured, minimal tailoring with high contrast details look best on you to my eye
Dramatic Classic might have sprung to mind even without the help of Mr K.
Least favourites are 9 and 13 - something about those collars looks a bit old fashioned on you.
You have great hair.
Your kitties are adorbs.

Summer: Thanks for your comments. Lightness near my face is a newer insight and even exploring shades of gray sweaters is also new. So thanks for bringing some of that to my attention. Again, thank you!!

Suz: Yes, we love to curl up with our kitties by the fire. That makes for the best kind of winter. I'm not a fan of the cold but I enjoy these moments.

From what approprio, Caro, toronotogirl and others have mentioned regarding Kibbe -- this seems to be just as useful as body typing, but for me, it is even better than body typing.

The moto is new. I brought it home three times and finally decided it was a keeper. It is my first moto and with all my indecision -- the price fell dramatically. Still looking at how to style. Glad to get a thumbs up on it. I want to explore more edge. I will definitely look harder at the silhouette of 10 -- yes, casual at home but there is something appealing about this for me too. 14 is totally me shopping in my closet an experimentation - glad this works. Better photography ... yes, and yes.

approprio: You're no stranger. You're my creative sister! You say "tailored" -- and yes, I'm exploring that. Got it, need to have lightness in the darkness. Good call! I also prefer wool coat hands down to puffer (and I'm on the fence about keeping puffer but it's great for going to the gym on frigid days). Thank you for making distinction between beige and gray. This is really new learning for me. Love -- your line "Structured, minimal tailoring with high contrast details". And yes, got your early validation on DC (and again, this has really helped me). LOVE, LOVE the comment about the collars looking old fashioned. Great insight. And thanks for the comments about my hair and my babes! Good stuff!

I like your outfits best where your hair is down. I don't know if it's just the hair, or if something changes about the outfits when it's down.

You have a strong, modern preppy vibe to me.

rachylou: I didn't realize that my hair down had such an impact. I'm going to take a closer look. And geez, that means more time blow drying. Yuck.

I was a little surprised when you described me as "pretty" -- I know I have some classic tendencies but I really want to push edge more. Hmm. I wish I was a little bit more Victoria Beckham (inspired by her fashion show posted earlier today)...I really need to be on the hunt for some more unexpected pieces.

I like the edginess of the moto jacket look, and I think you wear layers well. I think you are on the right track for VB, it will just be a matter of perfecting the look. I think very modern tailored pieces and perfectly oversized toppers could be part of the puzzle. My least favorite is 13. I think approprio summed it up nicely. By the way, your kitties are so adorable!

You are on a roll here and I wouldn't want to say anything that might throw you off ~ so just keep doing what you're doing. I especially liked seeing you in the moto in #6 ... I guess that's one of the few cases where fashion indecision literally paid off! You have a trademark style already -- the knits, the scarves, the boots, the palette -- and have integrated the structured leather in a perfect way. (It fits great, doesn't overwhelm, and bookends the boots.) So that's a good road to explore further. To be my picky self, I'd only add that the plaid in #9 doesn't seem special enough, and the scarf in #11 kind of fights the asymmetric tunic. (Maybe, as approprio said, it's just that the cooler grays are better on you, especially near the face.) Anyway, all FWIW! Oh, and by the way, if you're on the fence about the puffer, I say keep it.

I love every single outfit that you have showed up. I do like the moto jacket because it looks so different than all the other outfits. Plus, your glasses, #15 scarf, and hair are awesome.

I agree totally with gauche's first sentence. The other thing I'm struggling with (& it may just be me) is that I'm not sure about the high contrast on you - in #3 I do see the clothes before I see you. In #8 I see you & I love your hair in this photo. This could be for so many other reasons, it's so hard to tell these things from a static photo across all these internet miles.

What about making a note of how you feel in your outfits at the end of the day? I found that noting how I felt really helped me to home in on why something did or didn't work for me.

Meredith: Another comment on the moto jacket look, that's really good to hear. And yes, I'm definitely exploring layers (that's also new to me). They're not easy. "Perfecting the look" -- yes, I'm feeling like I need some refinement just need to be more critical of purchases. And I like how you describe some of the puzzle pieces "very modern tailored pieces and perfectly oversized toppers." gauche: I'm definitely going to proceed (carefully) with the great advice I'm receiving. More refinement and better photography so I can actually see what I wore. Well hell, I'm glad I got the moto (the sales rep told me that another sales rep had their eye on it). Your comment about me having "trademark style already -- the knits, the scarves, the boots, the palette" is a good sign. I'm trying to build a more cohesive look. I will take your advice on exploring bookending and what the moto brings. Yes, plaid doesn't seem special. enough. Great point about scarf in #11 fighting the asymmetric tunic. Puffer stays (for now). And lightness (grayness but maybe not whiteness - caro in oz might also be on to something here) around face. Thank you!!

caro in oz: I don't want you to be nervous about throwing me off. I need adjustment and refinement -- and you guys provide such good insight.

Your comment "Struggling with high contrast on you" - and seeing the clothes and not me. I see what you mean. Sometimes my lighter scarves make me feel like they are flashing. I'll play around with just how light around my face -- and just how much contrast. And I LOVE the idea about jotting a note about how I feel. Glad to hear that it yielded fruit for you! Great advice. Oh, great series of outfits. I do see a style there for sure.
I also like the lighter colors for tops but still you can wear black very well.
The silvery and steely grays are fab, if you are committed to neutrals. I would try some other cool colors, like the bluish sweater. Scarves and T neck works well. I think you have a sporty side also.

AM - don't have time for a long reply, but briefly:

Love all your boots.
Agree with others that you look terrific with lighter scarves (3,4,6,7).
Also love all your looks with leggings (or ponte pants? it's hard to see on the photos) - e.g. 14,17,19.
My favorite look in general is probably 6.

unfrumped: Thank you. And it's great to hear that you "do see a style there for sure." Makes my heart sing! And as for exploring blue -- I agree and this is new. And I think spring will yield lots of blue exploration. I fee very comfortable in T neck -- or scarf around neck. Not sure why but you're dead on. And you think I have a sporty side... interesting. Not sure but good food for thought. Again, thank you for your feedback. Really means a lot.

Daria: Yes, boots are important. I need to continue to seek out boots that have a little something special. I fall into a little trap of rushing vs. spending the time to find a great boot (or great piece in general). And thanks for the comments about lighter scarves, the leggings/ponte, and I am still stunned about the moto jacket. Again, thank you. Just getting people's favorites is great feedback.

Great points made here. I agree about the collars and the high contrast not being your best - long, lean drama is your look! I will reread later because the insights here are really remarkable. I need to put up a batch like this too!

Btw, I think your cat in #23 is my cat soulmate.

This is really hard, because I like them all. I really like the moto jacket outfit, though, and the skirt and asymmetrical sweater (though now that gauche mentions it, I might try a smaller scarf with it). Like approprio, I prefer your long military coat over the puffer, though I think sometimes you just need a long puffer, right? And that one is very nice on you. Really, you seem to have a well honed style. I would say there's a minimal element to these looks, in that you wear a lot of solid neutrals; or perhaps quiet or understated is more accurate? There is also boldness, in your glasses, your use of scarves and asymmetry. There is a luxe or refined element, with rich looking fabrics that drape well and pieces that fit you well, an overall feeling of quality. I agree with Rachylou's description of "modern preppy," and I think if you wanted to add more edge to your look, you might consider adding some rougher elements like some moto boots or chunky belts or rugged jewelry. Or the cargo pants you said you're looking for--that's going in a little more edgy direction. You might take a look at this blogger, that Inge introduced here a while back. (She came to mind because she's someone who is edgy with long hair.) Or think of channeling Kate Moss a little bit.

Your hair is beautiful, no denying it. I know you said you like to put it up sometimes. I like how you did it in #10. Sleek and nice. Also #13 (a casual pony tail?) has the look of "Old Money" that I often see on women at Nordstrom here. Great batch of outfits.

shevia: I need to figure out collars and the high contrast -- really good points. You are definitely speaking my language when you say "long, lean drama is your look!" I really try to elongate my look. I'm only 5'4 but I absolutely aim for length (give me height!). Many, many thanks for these comments.

Firecracker: I couldn't be happier that I purchased the moto jacket. Wow. I need to get busy styling it! Skirt and asymmetrical sweater is a completely new direction (haven't worn a skirt in years). I also preter military coat over the puffer -- but yes, to answer your question, I think I need a longer puffer.

I'm glad that you read this collection as a "honed style." I would say that was my first goal. Your words: "minimal, solid neutrals, quiet or understated" with some "boldness, in your glasses, your use of scarves and asymmetry" -- very well said. I also like your comment "luxe or refined element, with rich looking, feeling of quality."

I'm struggling with "modern preppy" so many thanks for your suggestion about creating more edge. Great blog suggestion and i'll need to reflect more on Kate Moss. Many, many thanks!!

quiet girl: Thanks for the compliments on my hair. I see all these lovely ladies on YLF with great cuts and I have been really debating about going to a layered bob. That was my cycle -- bob then grow it out, then back to bob, repeat. But my hair has been long for about 10 years so part of me wants change and part of me enjoys putting it up. It is going to stay long for now. And yes, I do it sleek or casual pony tail (that is actually new) -- I'm just starting to play. I was wearing it up in claw clip bun way too much. Lazy, lazy.

I had another thought about the puffer. As puffers go, it is pretty darned amazing. How about with the furry hat and the white/grey scarf, and massive stomping boots if you have them, to top and tail the look? With hair down, of course.

CocoLion: Oh my, and I hadn't even seen your comment about "preppy minimalist" vibe before I threw caution to the wind yesterday with my ostrich outfit. My husband is no longer afraid and is actually coming around to it. Who knows what I would have done yesterday if I had seen this too! Fun stuff.
