Picasso Challenge #4: Reading on the Beach

Two jackets, one on top of the other. The boxy shapes express a cubist vibe and the digital print of the top layer evokes the sea. The pants are denim chinos from Christophe Lemaire, bought on very deep discount. They are extremely baggy, even after alteration.

I like the mix of high and low style here but I'm doubtful. Everything's playing nicely together, it feels quite edgy, but I can't help thinking I should be wearing slimmer pants.

I would never have thought to layer jackets, but you have caught the mood and lines of the painting. An arty outfit. Did you wear it out?

Don't change. The layered jackets work amazingly well. Great print on the top one. I like how the boxy bagginess of the bottoms work with the top, but it also depends how you look in motion.

Slimmer pants would make the look more feminine, but this works too. More Tomboy. All good.

shevia: thanks for that! I think it actually looks better in motion than it does in the pictures. I'm keeping it on, don't really have time to change.

Angie: why, Joe Jackson's Stepping Out of course! It's Friday, and I'm off out in my (almost) pink and blue.

I like them all, they've all worked for what I've been doing this week, and I'd wear any one of them again. The black and white haori is quite special though. I'm always happy to wear that. Ask me again next week when I've done the Acrobat.

Brilliant to layer the two jackets! I like the looser pants - they suggest the boxy lines on the figure. I like that you've taken the whole palette a few shades darker, yet it still evokes the same feel. Like reading on a stormy beach.

This is so interesting! I would never think to layer the jackets like that, but it absolutely works. The pattern on the top jacket is so beautiful.

Thanks Angie! What a lovely compliment And Joe Jackson is one of my favourites too. He sells out immediately when he plays here, but I've managed to score tickets for a couple of gigs. He plays at an enormous grand piano, so there's always a space at the front of the pit where all you can see are his feet. I have watched Joe Jackson's feet in concert more than once. He wears nice shoes.

Diane, Suz: Thanks! I did feel a bit doubtful in the beginning about the layered jacket, but it drew some very nice comments last evening. I hung it straight back in the wardrobe like this and I'll definitely repeat it with a few different bottoms while the weather warms up.

Approprio, were you a teen in the '80s? (I was - I'm almost 45 now). I just read your comment on my "favourite fashion eras" thread, and was high fiving you all the way. What is it about the '80s that makes us appreciate it more and more as we get older? As for Joe Jackson - you lucky fish. Have not seen him in concert yet, but you're right to watch his fab feet.

(Full Disclosure: Iggy Azalea is blaring as I type this Saturday morning. We - especially Greg - love music).

I also read that you are a multi-media design teacher. Your style makes even more sense with this tidbit of info.

Angie: yes, we're about the same age. I've just been off on one in the other thread about how the era we grow up in influences our style and gets fed back into the fashion cycle.

For the record, teaching is only part of my practice. It's one of my favourite things to do right now. There's such an amazing energy among my students. I sometimes think I'm learning more than they are.

I have so enjoyed every one of your posts in this challenge Approprio and am a big fan of your style. This outfit is no exception, slim or looser pants, it all is great. A very cool look to my eyes, and it relates well to the art.
