It was about 11:30 last night. I had already showered and gone to bed. I heard a persistent barking through the window. I recognized it as one of our dogs. The other one tore out of the bedroom and joined in barking. I finally got up to see what DH was doing. I hoped the dog wasn't disturbing our neighbors. I looked out the kitchen window and saw a light coming towards the house. It was DH, muddy and bleeding (from a scratch on his arm), wearing his headlamp, carrying our dog in his arms. I opened the door. It hit me like a Mack truck. Skunk! It doesn't smell anything like the faint skunk smell in the distance. It definitely makes you want to leave a skunk alone. Wow! Really revolting.

I searched through the cupboards for hydrogen peroxide. We both thought we had some. No luck. We put the dog, along with water and a kong, in the garage while DH went to the store to buy supplies. After all, he was dressed. I dressed and gathered together plastic bowls, towels, etc. while he was gone. The dog seemed to be stunned. No barking from the garage. He's a mighty hunter.

After DH returned, I mixed hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and baking soda. As DH held the dog I put a tiny bit of mineral oil in each eye, and then started rubbing the mixture into his fur. Unfortunately, he was sprayed in his face. We put him in the bathtub and started rinsing him. We dried him as much as possible and DH took him out in the front yard on a leash to let him roll around in the grass. When they came back in, he still stunk, but a little less so. As DH held him (all 24 pounds) I rubbed the mixture on his snout some more. He doesn't seem to mind. I think he's still on a high. Anyway, we washed off the mixture and they went out front again.

He stinks, but less so. Our house stinks. We stink. And now it's 1 am. What a day.

He here is from last week:
