I see my little comment brought up a discussion...
Here's what I meant. While we may get inspired by these show, say by color combinations, silhouettes, etc., the vast majority of these looks appear out-of-place in most women's daily lives, even if we can afford them. Granted, those who can afford them may have lifestyles to match, but there aren't that many of them.
Haute couture is like an art exhibition. It's a spectacle. Dressing up and taking care of yourself has little to do with it. It's simply not in the same league. Each collection in those shows vies for attention - at any cost, by any means. The most weird, the better. Does that translate to real life? In most cases, no. Regular women don't a prayer of reproducing it and when they try too hard, it looks ridiculous.
The fashion shows don't sell clothing; they sell names. Why? Because there are a handful (in the low thousands) of women in the world who buy this clothing. The rest buy the overpriced and often exceptionally ugly bags and other accessories with the prominently displayed logos, thinking doing that buys them a spot among the fashionable and wealthy. It does not. The truly wealthy women don't need such displays. The real quality is subdued.
