OT: I have H1N1 flu

Yesterday I started feeling bad. I went to the doctor and found out I have H1N1 influenza.

The good news is that because I went to the doctor right away they could give me Tamiflu and that should shorten the time that I'm sick. The bad news is that I feel bad, fever up to 102F, awful headache, coughing, muscle aches, chills, the whole thing. I am also having hallucinations and delusions when I try to sleep that if I don't get my body in exactly the right position I won't get better.

I also would like to complain that when I'm sick I'm really bummed that my sweetie lives in a different city. I was supposed to go visit him on Thursday but I'm not allowed to go out of the house until I've had no fever for 24 hours, and that will probably take 5-7 days.

Thank you for letting me vent.

Oh no! I hope you feel better soon. I am pretty sure I had this a few months back - I did see the doctor (near the end of it) but our town had stopped testing. He said it was "likely" H1N1 because it was going around our town and all tested cases were coming back positive so they were no longer bothering to test unless a case became critical enough for the ER.

For me the symptoms were:

- high temp: got up as high as 104 without tylenol; around 102 with tylenol
- horrible muscle aches - bad enough to wake me up; luckily, these only lasted a day or two
- awful headache
- chest pains (the most alarming symptom for me, but again, it only lasted about a day)
- cough, exhaustion and fatigue

The worst of it was over in about 2-3 days, but the fatigue and cough lingered for over a week. Nobody else in our house came down with it, not even my DH, which I thought was interesting.

Stay in bed, take care of yourself, get some rest... you'll be over it in no time.

Oh how awful :( Please take care of yourself and get lots of rest. My brother had it a while ago and it seemed basically like regular flu. He only suspected it wasn't because his boss was confirmed to have it.

Oh no! Are you alone at home? That's awful, Medusa. Can your sweetie fly in to Colorado?

Get LOTS of rest and drink loads of fluids. We will be hear each time you need extra TLC.

How horrible Medusa. i am so sorry to hear this.

Take good care of yourself, lots of rest, sleep and liquids.

I do not know if this will cheer you up a bit or not, but your pretty NL sweater dress that was on your wish list went on pretty steep sale at Nordies:

Hope you feel better soon! I had this (well, it wasn't confirmed, but I'm pretty sure it was the same thing) a couple of months ago too. Not fun. Lotsa soup, tea and sleep. I took Advil too, and that helped.

Oh no how awful take care.
On a lighter note watch those delusions and internet shopping we don't want you ordering bad ppl trousers and the like thinking they are fashionable! x

Oh Medusa...take care of yourself. It is making its rounds in Minnesota too. I was lucky enough to get the H1N1 flu mist last Friday (I work at a health care clinic). I hope there is someone around to pamper you and bring you chicken noodle soup.

It *really* will pass and you will get better...although from what I hear, at times it doesn't feel that way.

Be Well...Susan D

Oh, dear. I had it 2 weeks ago. 4 of the longest days of my life..so I feel your misery. Just rest, sip fluids and let your body recover. Feel better soon!

Poor Medusa, how horrible to be going through this on your own! Good that you got Tamiflu. Like Shiny's town, there stopped testing in my town (we just went through winter) and seemed only to give tamiflu to high risk people. However they now have a vaccine and people over 10 can get it for free ( I had mine a few weeks ago) funded by the Australian government (it will be free for kids too I expect- they just haven't got the vaccine right yet).

Sorry to hear that it has hit your part of the country too! I am pretty sure our whole family had it a couple of weeks ago, even the kids. They're not testing any longer in these parts too. My little one still has a lingering cough leftover as he was the last one to get it. But we all survived and honestly, I hope that it was the swine flu because I'd like to build up some immunity to it now at the start of the flu season.

Personally, I would not feel comfortable taking the new H1N1 vaccine - it has been rushed to the market without rigorous testing because of the fears of a pandemic virus. In the last swine flu scare in the 70's, thousands of people (which I know is small compared to the millions who received it) developed Guillain-Barre syndrome because of the vaccine.

I'm sorry to hear that this has caused you to delay your trip. But the best place for you to be right now is in bed resting!

Hi everyone, THANK YOU so much for all the good wishes.

I didn't post any updates because I developed pneumonia as a complication and spent Wednesday-Friday in the hospital. I'm doing vastly better now and very happy to be home. I guess it will take weeks to fully recover from the pneumonia. It is not very fun.

Oh Medusa I'm so sorry to hear you were in the hospital! How awful. I had pneumonia when I was 7 and it was miserable. So glad you're doing better!

I'm starting to feel crummy today. Hope I didn't catch anything on the train this week, or I won't be able to go for my interview on Tues. :(

Oh, hard luck Medusa. I'm sorry! I've been obsessively washing my hands and using hand sanitizer because I know so many people who are sick right now and I don't envy them (you!) at all. Take care of yourself!

Posted 3 weeks ago

Oh Medusa, I was starting to worry when you didn't check in, please don't rush your recovery. Please take it easy. Has your partner travelled to be with you?

Posted 3 weeks ago

Oh no! Medusa! That must have been quite a scare. So glad you're feeling better.

Posted 3 weeks ago

Poor Medusa. Were you able to transport yourself to the hospital? Best wishes for your recovery!

Posted 3 weeks ago

Thank goodness you are out of the hospital. I'm so sorry you're sick, I hope you feel better soon.

Posted 3 weeks ago

Thanks again for all the kind wishes, everyone.

Yes, my sweetie flew in from New York after they admitted me to the hospital. When I was in the emergency room we had this hilarious conversation: he said that he had made a plane reservation, and that he would definitely come if I had pneumonia and would probably come even if I didn't. So when the test results came back that I did have pneumonia he went home to pack. :-)

I'm doing better and better. I guess it will take a couple weeks to get back to 100% and I'm still pretty weak, but I'm not so sick anymore.

Posted 3 weeks ago

Medusa - sorry that you have been so ill. I'm glad to hear that things are on the mend now. Hang in there.
