OT: Angie - Are You Watching No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency?

I'm really enjoying the HBO series, based on the best-selling books. It's set in Botswana, and I love seeing the beautiful scenery and hearing the charming language. (It's shot on location, and looks and feels so authentic.)

I have read some of the books! I'm not watching the tele series though. Are you enjoying the story line?

I’ve been to Botswana several times. Tragically, it’s absolutely aids infested over there but the locals are so lovely and the sunsets are unprecedented. There is NOTHING that comes close to an African sunset. I bet the Aussies on this forum will disagree with me. Sorry lasses, I can’t be swayed on this one!

Tara, how is the leggings look coming along. You were making great progress while I was away.

I am enjoying it. I love any movie that takes me to a world I don't know, and I don't know that part of the world at all. I love the colorful fashions, the language is so beautiful to listen to, and the countryside is amazing. They do try to address some of the very real social problems in the story lines, and I think it's a good balance.

As far as the leggings look goes, I'm still working on it. I go back and forth. At times I feel I'm too fat and old and carry it off, but other times I still want to pursue it as a warm weather look.

I like the sheath very much for the structure, but I'm also looking for one more option that's a bit more casual. I'm debating a jersey-type dress I found - I know that isn't your first choice for me, but I do like the casual element. I don't think it's too much fabric, but I'm not sure yet. I'll post a picture when I've got it figured out. Thanks for asking!

My mom and I have enjoyed the book series and are very interested to see the show - and even more so now that I've heard your positive take on it. Unfortunately we don't get HBO so will have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

I read and enjoyed a few of the books a while ago. How coincidental. NPR just had an interview with the actress - Anika Noni Rose. I haven't see the show yet.

Interesting. I enjoyed the first one in that series and some others by the same author but for some reason haven't finished the series. Wonder if it will be shown in Aus.
Angie I haven't seen an africa sunset so can't really compare :-) Have you seen an Aussie one?

I caught some of it on BBC earlier this year. It's a great series and Botswana looks fabulous. I would love to visit the region of Southern Africa (well, being honest, I would love to visit all of Africa) as my African Politics module this semester sparked a huge interest for me in the continent.

I saw the first one and have more recorded that I need to watch. I first watched out of curiosity when the show got a big write up in the local paper, but it really drew me into a world I know nothing about. Love when that happens. I have not read the books.

I'm with you Angie on the sunsets... and the night chorus heard just moments after the sun goes down. Nothing quite like sundowners in the African bush!

I have read some of the books, which are lovely. (If you like them, read his 44 Scotland Street series - wonderfully fun characters!) I don't get HBO but watched the show when I was visiting my parents. It's really well done and the characters/actors are truly enjoyable. Jill Scott is delightful - everyone is, actually.

I love those books. Every summer we go to the Edinburgh book festival and hear Alexander Mc Call Smith speak. He is adorable and as kind and humble as one of his characters. I have not seen the series but cannot wait. We do not have cable access because of some strange thing about wires in our loft. Imagine, 2 years without TV!
I have done much reading.
rosebudrmm,
I have read most all of his books, I love the Scotland street series!!

Bertie is one of my favorite characters ever! :)

It must be fun to see him. He has brought to life the people and culture of both Botswana and Scotland for me.

I also love Bertie, especially when he went to Paris!!There is a real floatarium (not sure how it was spelled) in Edinburgh. We loved seeing many of the streets he talks about in his books.
