Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Opinions on my coats

Please tell me what you think of my coats! I have two, both pre-YLF:

1. a grey cashmere-blend peacoat. I bought this J. Crew double-breasted coat on eBay, but it doesn't fit! (I know, I know... ugh!) I caved in to buying it on eBay instead of the store because it was a tall size (sleeves are long enough!), it had Thinsulate, and it was within my budget, whereas the coats on the actual J.Crew site were not. It is very wide and baggy in the back, and if you all think it works for me I'll probably take it to the tailor to have it altered. I've never been to a tailor, can anyone tell me what I should ask for with this? And does the hem hit my hips at an okay place? I almost feel it should be shorter.

2. a black wool trench style that hits mid-thigh. I've had this for four years, and it has been a good basic coat, but it is better for fall than winter because of it's thickness.

Here are photos:

Now that fall is coming, I'm getting my fall items ready. I would *love* to get a bolder coat like this someday, but I'll have to save up for a while. :)

My dear LE, I hear you on why you bought the grey cashmere coat. Here’s my 2 cents:

o Lined coats are extremely hard and expensive to alter. The alteration on this coat will cost more than the coat itself.
o The length is hitting you at your widest point. It needs to be shorter or longer (you are spot in). The long coat you’re wearing in the other photo is so much more flattering. You look beautiful in a longer length coat.
o The colour does not do pretty you justice.

Laura Elizabeth, I agree that the gray coat doesn't flatter you. The black coat is a much better fit.

P.S. You're adorable!

Thank you SO much! I am so glad to have your thoughts before I tried to get the coat to 'work'. I will try to sell the grey and look for another winter coat. My mom was talking to me about coloring/seasons just the other night (I am a spring?) so I'll browse through the blog and forum to try to understand colors a bit better... I had thought that shade of grey was flattering on me, so it looks like I have some learning ahead of me!

Thank you for your advice - it's good to get honest opinions on the forum!

I agree that the grey coat is too big and that the color does nothing for pretty you.

Have fun with the season theory for coloring ( you do look like spring to me too), but do not take it 100% serious. I am a Summer and found that i can wear quite a few colors that Summers are not supposed to ( but my core wardrobe is in mostly Summer colors plus black, i could never give it up). As Angie says, it also depends a lot on what other colors you combine that certain color with.
