I know I shouldn't say it, but I can't help myself. I think the world is going to keep spiraling downward in this way if we keep up with the same level of accepting it as the new normal and feeling powerless or apathetic.
Many in France are blaming their leadership for lack of security, but is it really a small group's sole responsibility to notice a dangerous, troubled person in society? This could happen on any busy street in any city - not just during a big event. How is leadership supposed to keep that from occurring? It's really not possible.
When we see someone in our neighborhood that is questionable should we really just ignore it and hope nothing happens? It's not fun sometimes getting involved (I've had to do it a few times, even going to court once against a dangerous person) but if we don't, who will?
These types of attacks do not have to be the new normal. We can all make a difference.
