LOL, we named our pug Sophie when we got her as a puppy 11 years ago, and I knew no little kids named Sophie back then. The name has become a lot more popular. But I love the name, and there's never been any confusion of my dog for a child, or vice versa.
And then we added Tippi, so clearly we like the -Y names for our pets. Sunny the dog in Texas, and Dusty the cat... those were natural names for a ranch.
I kind of feel like the name makes itself known, you know? When we were thinking about names for Sophie, we were thinking about our honeymoon in Canada, so we thought about naming her for a place there (i.e., Louise for Lake Louise...) but it just didn't seem to fit. Then we remembered hearing a song on our way to Canada that we loved and had to research to find out who did it. The name of the song, of course, was Sophie. It stuck.
Tippi took longer to figure out. I really wanted to call her Olive, but we have friends with a pug named Oliver, and my husband didn't want to name ours something so close. And he went on the food theme and wanted to call her Apple, and I of course said no, we're not naming our dog like Gwynneth Paltrow names her child!
Well, meanwhile, this hysterical little pug puppy keeps doing this thing where she sits and looks up at us, and when she tilts her head up, she just tips over backward. So...tippy, which became Tippi.
Anyway, all of this is not very helpful, I'm sure, but you get the drift. We agonized over a list of names, only to have something come to us in a more organic way. When you stumble upon the right name, you'll know it. After a few days with a new pet, their personality will become more apparent and some things will seem to fit better than others. Enjoy! She is adorable.
