Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

New denim skirt & new dress - honest feedback needed

Some of the things I've recently ordered just came in the mail, and I'd love some honest feedback. Most of the items I ordered were too big, so I'm already doing some returns.

Here are the items I'm thinking about keeping:
#1 & #2 - same denim skirt, different tops. I already own the tops, I'm just trying to decide about the skirt. It looks kind of big to me, but I'm not sure. It's very comfortable and seems to fit about right through the waist. It seems like it would be a versatile piece.

#3 - brown dress. I love how comfortable this is, and I planned to wear it with my new denim jacket (which I had to exchange, since it was too big). Does it need more definition in the waist, or is it okay for a casual summer dress?

#4 - this is actually an old outfit and I'm looking for honest feedback. What's wrong with it? I never feel quite right in it, but I can't quite figure out why. There's something about the pants that I don't like, but I'm not sure what.

Thank you very much. I placed another order today and am hoping that if I order enough things I will eventually find pieces that work.

Christine

Hi Christine! I love the sailor-style skirt. It fits you nicely. The one potential issue is that, in my experience, a skirt with that kind of button detail really demands a tucked-in top, otherwise the top competes too much with the skirt. (Also the buttons are large enough that they show through a knit top). Does it feel that way to you?

I have to be honest - I don't love the brown dress. The color is a little blah and the shape isn't completely flattering to your cute figure. What do you think? I do like the black and white top, although Angie isn't a fan of cap sleeves.

The last outfit with the pink top is good in theory, but it looks a little big for you. Could that be why you don't feel right wearing it?

Hi Christine, the skirt looks great, it has a perfect length for you and shows off your pretty legs. Laura has an interesting comment regarding the button detail at the top; I'm wondering if this could be overcome if the tops were a little shorter?

I prefer the first top to the second top, by the way, because of the sleeves. Your arms look prettier in the first photo than with the cap sleeves in the second photo - although I like the top in general (this is a common issue with cap sleeves; sleeveless tops generally are more flattering on most women unless you're really young or your arms are really skinny and toned.) I'd look for either sleeveless styles or short/half length sleeves.

I do not favor the dress, either. The shape is not flattering, it just doesn't drape at the right places. I'd pass on this.

I actually really like the last outfit with the brights!

I think the skirt looks fine and doesn't appear to be too large. The length is good for you (you have wonderful legs!). I like both tops, but I don't mind cap sleeves if your arms are good. I never thought about Laura's point about sailor style skirts but that makes sense to me. I wonder what your tops would look like tucked into the skirt.

I agree with the others about the brown dress. I think you can find something a little more flattering for you. It does look comfy though!

The last outfit looks fine, but like Laura, I think the blouse may be a little too large for you. Also, how do you feel the jeans fit you? I can't tell if they appear to be a little large around your thighs as well? I love the pop of color with the shoes too!

Hi Christine,
I do not have much to add other than I agree with what has been said. The skirt is great on you, I like the first top a bit better although I also like the second. The brown dress does not flatter your nice figure. The last outfit looks good but the shirt might be a bit too large?

The skirt is adorable - I love the button detailing, and it looks great on you. I don't think the brown dress does you justice. I love the color of your shirt in the last outfit, and it looks so good on you, I just think the shirt is too big. Maybe you could try belting it? It might be too big and the material under the belt may bunch, but maybe not.

Well done Christine! You are on your way. I adore your chic bob :0)

I love the skirt and don’t mind the sailor buttons. The first outfit is GREAT. Big pat on the back.

While I adore your bod in a wrap style, I feel that cap sleeves are not the best look for you. Sleeveless or elbow length is SO much better. But it’s not a bad look, so by all means keep wearing that top.

I’d also pass on the dress. Look for a V-neck and a brighter colour instead. Brown is actually really hard to wear. Go for blue. Brunettes in blue is a slam dunk.

I can’t see the fit of the last outfit well enough to comment on that part but you look fabulous in that raspberry colour. Get more items in that shade!

Can I just add that I really love your sandals too!!! The denim skirt looks fantastic!

Thank you for all the feedback! I was worried about the buttons on the skirt and even thought about trying to remove them, but I think I'm going to try tucking things in (which I haven't tried in about a decade because I have a short waist and am busty). I'm so happy that the skirt works, though, because I feel like I've tried on a million denim skirts.

I'm finding it challenging to find skirt tops; as I said, I have a short torso, so I think to get a shirt that hits above my hipbones I'm going to have to buy a petite. But, if I'm tucking it in, it wouldn't matter as much. Would something like this work if I tucked it in? I would normally avoid this style because it's a little too loose, but does that matter if it's tucked in?

Thank you for the honest feedback on the dress, too. I've felt the same way ever since I got it home. I bought it at the end of a long day of shopping in which I hadn't found anything that I liked, and I think I was just desperate to buy something.

I think that the color is the reason I've kept the pink blouse. Maybe I'll be able to layer it under a jacket at some point. I've placed another order for work clothes, so hopefully I'll have more pictures to post soon. I really appreciate the feedback!

Yes, that cowlneck top from BR would look fantastic with the skirt. Great idea!

I have always adored sailor pants and skirts and find them really flattering. I am glad you're keeping the skirt.

Can't wait to see more photos!
