Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Need Suggestions for Accessories

I just got a new dress, which I love. The problem is, I'm not sure what type of jewelry or shoes to wear with it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated--especially if you can show me a pictures of possible items.

Lovely dress. How are you going to be wearing this dress...casual day dress, going to events dress, etc?

Fun, chunky pearls would be neat for a necklace or a chunky turquoise necklace as well. Fuchsia and orange are fun together, if you can swing an orange purse or other small accessory.

A belt could be an interesting possibility as well. I'm sure others will chime in to give more opinions.

Thanks, Dani. I'm mostly planning on wearing this as a casual day dress.

I had never even considered pairing this with orange. I'm going to have to try that! Turquoise is something I could definitely see.

I second the pearls. That would be so fab.

I could also see a necklace with a pendant. Or an arm of bangles. A scarf around your neck in all the colors Dani suggested would be nice, too.

Great! I'm going shopping this weekend. I'll be sure to share what I find!

You are so pretty and you look great in the dress! The first thing that came to mind without have read the rest of the comments was pearls.

Thanks, Sihaya! I'm surprised people are suggesting pearls. They seem like the kind of thing you'd wear with silk or another fancy fabric--this is more like t-shirt material. Hmm...I'm going to have to give it a try.

I thought of a chunky pearl too like this -

or this -

but if you want something else:

A silver link necklace - something in this fashion (or with even links but I couldn't find a pic) - http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/30.....50&P=1

When I was looking at necklaces on Nordstrom site I spotted this orange and fuschia combo - posting so you can see the contrast - so pretty!

I love necklaces so that was my focus. You could do a lot with the dress. Wear a contrasting color cami under it and do silver accessories and a modern bag.
Do up the glam aspect with the pearls and a heel.
Good choice for many possibilities!

Chris, thank you for your suggestions! You've given me so many ideas. I never would have thought of the cami. I'm going to play with these suggestions and see if I can come up with several outfits. Thanks again!

You look great in this dress. Can you share which brand it is?

Thanks, elpgal. I sew a lot of my own clothes, since I enjoy the process and because it's more cost-effective for me. I found this pattern in the June 2009 Burda -- it's a German magazine.

Wow! You did a beautiful job on that dress!
Your "pearls" don't need to be expensive or even real. Several members have bought a strand of chunky pearls that Ann Taylor usually carries, but you can find them everywhere. Here is a blog entry from Angie that addresses using pearls with smart casual outfits. Look through her blog entries for examples.

You MADE that dress? Wow! You should start a business...

I thought of a contrasting color camisole without reading the other comments. Pearls sound good.

You could wear the dress with leggings, or with boots and a turtleneck in the winter. (I know, winter's a ways off, but somehow the dress made me think of that.)

Thanks, ladies! You've been so helpful. I can totally see this with a turtleneck and/or leggings. I've tried it on with a camisole. That worked out nicely. I was surprised to find it looked cute with both my denim jacket and an A-line velvet jacket I bought from Boden last spring.

I bought two necklaces--which I like anyway, but they just weren't quite the right size, shape, something...

I also shopped around for some pearls. Nothing I've seen has struck me as just the right thing, but I'll keep looking. I didn't check out Ann Taylor...so that will be next. Thanks, Joy, for the links to the pearls articles!

Belts are more challenging with this dress, because they'd have to be just the right size to look right with the waistband.

It's a fun challenge to see how many looks I can come up with this one dress.

wow the dress is gorgeous! The color is great for you!
I would go only for a bracelet and nice earrings it's more youthful and simple!
