Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Need confirmation that this coat looks weird...

I bought this coat a month or so ago. At first I liked it, but now looking at it I think it's completely wrong. It's trapeze style and I think it makes me look EVEN wider than I am (who knew that was possible?)

Lovely on the model:

Look how frumpy I look in it:

I just need confirmation that it is indeed all wrong so I can return it and look for something else.

I like this one in yellow or purple and think it may be better because it's more fitted:

Thoughts?

I think you're right that it isn't quite right for you, but I don't think it has to do with the fit. I just think the neckline is not flattering. You can totally get away with the voluminous shape, but to wear a neckline like that, you need a really long neck.

I agree with maya! It adds too much volume.. can you turn it back?

Maya, true. I'm always so drawn to those dramatic necklines! It's a shame.

Rute, yes I can return it and probably plan to.

Ooh that's a pretty coat! I do agree with Maya about the collar. I am always drawn to that style of collar but it doesn't work for me. I just saw a bunch of similar coats at Benetton that were very cute :(
I like the SM coat in purple or magenta, it's worth checking out!

I wouldn't give up on trapeze style coats just yet Marianna. Maybe it's the collar on this one, I'm thinking perhaps a somewhat more fitted sleeve and more structure at the shoulders would be better too? (I could be completely off here).

Definitely try the Steve Madden one. Very cute.

I think the shape is great, but like every one else said, it's the neck. I have the same exact problem. :(

I agree that this is probably not the best coat for you. Besides the collar, the length doesn't seem right on you. Maybe something shorter?

Somehow, it’s just a tad too voluminous, Marianna, but as Inge and Sarah say, don’t give up on swing coats yet. It’s a super little retro look for you! Funnel necks are hard to wear so take it back and opt for something with a more regular neckline.

Beautiful color on you:) I agree with the girls...just a bit too much coat.

Perfect, just what I needed to hear. I'm taking it back tomorrow. I always need to listen to my gut instinct. When I first saw it in the store I put it on hold and kept extending the hold because I just wasn't sure. Then I felt bad for the sweet sales associate and finally bought it. Ha. Guess I should never buy something if I have even the slightest doubt!

Thanks for the suggestions, Inge. I wonder if Boden's biggest size would fit me? They have some beautiful options. I really want a coat in a bright color.

Marianna, Boden runs quite large. But if you have any doubts, you can see the garment measurements for each piece on the website.

You have such a lovely complexion! You wear this color so so well.

I actually love the colour and style on you but agree it's a tad too voluminous

Oh my gosh! I bought a mulberry Guess trapeze coat at NAS, and I assumed from looking at the pics on the site and of you that it was a totally different coat -- because I had never seen it with the collar up! I didn't even know it could go up like that!

Heh, at NAS they were showing it with the collar down, which was much better. Here is me in it:

Trapeze coats, (in my humble opinion anyway) only suit the very tall and thin person. Anybody shortish, or a little bit stocky, and they make you look like a fridge on legs. A belted trench is so much more flattering - for ALL body types.
And that funnel neckline looks like it's smothering the wearer! (Coat as a murder weapon??)
Sorry, but I don't find it at all attractive - but the color is nice, if that's any consolation!

Kristen, is that the same coat?! Wow, it looks so different on you! It looks GOOD on you. I attempted it with the collar down but there was still SO much width at the bottom. I think they probably messed it up for the plus size folk, made a tent rather than a flattering coat. It's maddening.

I agree with Judy. Long and lean bodies looks best in Trapeze coats.

In this case there is just too much fabric ,even for a trapeze coat. I think you are on to something about the lines of the coat not being translated well ,if this is from the Women's line. A shame. The color is wonderful.
How about a wrap coat?
Thankfully the big N has great return policies.
Please post what you do find.
Good Luck.
