Need Calming Vibes.

Just around 9pm I heard a very loud pop in the house. Then about 5 seconds later all the smoke alarms went off for about 30 seconds. I am freaking out and the dog is freaking out. Then I just hear a beep. Found the beeping smoke detector, open the slot to pull out the battery, and apparently the battery exploded. That was the pop. Removed the smoke detector and placed the exploded battery in a plastic bag and put it outside away from the house. It was fairly warm even an hour after I put it in the baggie. Did not put the smoke detector back. Got 8 more in the house so it should be good.

So now I am just typing away and can't get to sleep. The dog is on top of me and not leaving my side. I think I will leave the tv on all night.

Oh, and of course this happens when DH is away for business. He will be home tomorrow. Tomorrow can't get here quickly enough. I will probably laugh about this tomorrow - not tonight though.

You did good to put it outside to cool and you should be ok. Your doggie is taking comfort in you as you should in him/her. Tomorrow will be here very soon. I think I live close to you - and I am thinking of you and sending you peaceful, calming vibes. Get comfy and sleep will encompass you. Tomorrow will be here before you know it!

Thanks Donna! I think I feel some of those calming vibes you sent my way. Watching some old shows on Antenna TV. Glad I discovered this station, though I don't plan on staying up this late every night.

Was it a 9 volt? The kind that are rectangular with the two "electrodes" on the top? Those are fairly dangerous batteries and if you keep them loose, they can cause a fire if the electrodes from two different batteries touch, as they could if you put a bunch into a container. I realize this is not very calming vibe-wise, but if you do have 9-volts, be sure to store them separately so they don't do this. Glad you are OK. You did the right thing in putting the batteries outside.

Yes it was a 9 volt. Even though our smoke detectors are hard wired, they have a battery back up and without the battery they will beep. Yep, my 9 volts are stored separately. But late summer my DD was home alone when the smoke detector was beeping and she replaced the battery. I was not paying attention when I pulled it out, but am wondering if she put it in correctly. I double checked when I put in a new battery that it went in correctly.

I'm glad to hear it was "just" the battery and that you, your dog and the house are alright. Totally get it that you need a good amount of time to calm down after something like this. Watching those old shows sounds like just the ticket (so does snuggling with your furry friend).

Lara, these things save themselves for the very time that husbands/partners are away. You did just the right thing, but what a scary thing to happen. Hope your nerves have settled.

Thank you for the calming vibes. The last thing anyone needs is to be roused when you are getting ready for bed. And, Summer, my DH said the same thing. Stuff always happens when he is away.

But it in the end, smoke detectors save lives. So I am grateful for that. I will just say that it was a practice run. It also made me realize that I need to create a grab and go of important documents.

Oh, my! That would freak me out too. I am super paranoid about anything that can cause fire. My dad was a fire chief so I suppose having him running off to fires and hearing stories has made me vigilant.

Lara: Sorry for all that upset. That is a scary time. Glad it worked out.

If I crave this type of stress, I know it will come. I just check the calendar for DH's next international business trip (he's a high tech wonder, whereas, I, well, am not).

I'm glad things worked out. What a scare! My DH was away on business when our carbon monoxide detector went off. I had to buy a new furnace. Not fun to shop for something like that, but there was 6 inches of snow on the ground and I didn't want to be without heat until he got back to deal with it.

BC, you got me thinking about the furnace. Ours is 20 yrs old. May be close to replacing. Got to talk to DH about this when he gets back.

When I heard the loud pop, I initially thought furnace.
