My semi-tuck has been rejected

Good morning to all!

This morning
I am wearing a grey tee, semi-tucked into blue Capri pants, blue pointy pumps and
a red jacket. As soon as I
arrived in office, one of my male coworkers scolded me: Look, how you have
messed up! What’s that!?
And tried to straighten my tee. I said, no, it must be like this, it is the
semi –tuck! (I used the English
word) .

Male
coworker: What? What’s that!? I explained
what semi tuck is.

Female
coworker: Oh yes, I know! My daughter does that (her daughter is 12 years
old).

Male coworker
: Noooo ! It looks dowdy!

Me: it’s because
your eyes have not adjusted yet.

Hee-hee. Just
wanted to share.

To be honest, I took some time to adjust to the semi-tuck too! My sister has loved it for years and I would always call it "untidy".....until the day I did it myself!

I never wear the semi tuck because anytime I have tried it I have been informed that "my shirt is untucked". Honestly, I actually agree with this too- It has always looked disheveled to me. I have never actually seen anyone IRL wear this look either(but I live in a suburb that is not exactly on trend) I feel like this was a look put forth by bloggers/online stores to make their oversized clothing look better in pics. I have been surprised at how many on this forum have adopted this look tbh. I would be interested to hear how many have been told to "tuck in".

The semi tuck is a tricky beast! I actually love it on other people but when I do it myself I feel so conspicuous and unnatural. It's funny how easy something can look on others, but how forced it may feel on ourselves. My untucked part of the semi tuck never seems to lay graciously.

And, good for you! for educating him rather than running to the washroom and tucking in your shirt to avoid attention.

I have tried it a couple of times, but unsuccessfully. It just doesn't look right on me, or maybe I'm not doing it right. But I do like it on those here. Good for you!

There was a time when I semi tucked a lot, but I'm pretty much over it now. I definitely prefer untucked over pants and fully tucked with skirts. That said I think it can look good, with the right pieces and proportions. But looking back on pictures I missed the point more often than not.

Hmm, interesting. I have been semi-tucking a lot doing the period of 2-3 years when BF jeans have been at their highest, and nobody has ever told me anything. I work in a casual place where most people don't care about fashion at all and they do not hesitate to gently make a bit fun of me if they think something fashionable I am wearing is a bit strange looking to them.

This is hilarious. But also worrying. Your colleagues have no business mansplaining fashion. I hope you are still proudly rocking the semi-tuck.

I think it all boils down to how you like to deal with the waistline. I personally don't look that great cinched in, so a surrendered waist with a semi-tuck is a good solution.

I have to say, you took that very well. : ) I can't imagine one of my coworkers (male or female) scolding me or trying straighten my clothing!

A semi-tuck is certainly not a "thing" among the people around me in real life-- I think I've ever only seen it done once, in many years. Personally, it has a high fuss factor for me, so I've stuck with tops that have a built-in semi-tuck.

Approprio: that's exactly the reason why I sometimes semi-tuck! I want to surrender my waist but when an untucked top is too long, a front semi-tuck is the solution.

As per my male coworker, I was not surprised he did not like it: he does not like casual clothing (he himself is always in a suit). But he is always ready to pay us girls compliments when we wear something he likes, or for makeup, or hair.

I agree 100% with Aproprio. Your colleague deserves a scolding. But you are a good sport and I hope his eyes do adjust in time.

I love the semi-tuck. At first I thought it was kind of dumb, but I'm amazed at how well it helps to adjust proportions.

Ha, you are a good sport. I would probably have been kind f dumbfounded. nobody has ever called me out on the semi-tuck even though I'm certain many of my (not very fashionable) coworkers don't get it. But somehow I've gotten the reputation as the "fashionable" person around the place (haha the bar is low) so I think thy just assume it's me being me.

I used to semi tuck a lot when I was wearing BF jeans and oversized tops a lot. It is a good look for me because I hate full tucking for many reasons (uncomfortable and shows my short waistedness being the top two) so it was a way to get a little waist structure/definition w/oversized pieces. I still like it but don't do it as much because I've moved back to more tailored things for the most part, which I just leave untucked.

I'm with Approprio and Liz. My eyebrows went up when I read that your colleague tried to physically straighten out your clothing. But kudos to you for asserting yourself!

I'm often a fan of the semi-tuck because it helps slightly define shape with a roomy or long top without a full tuck, which calls too much attention to the shortness of my torso. However, I find I'm doing it less and just leaving tops fully untucked, especially with fits that are not quite so roomy. It really depends on the drape and shape of the top, for me.

I love semi-tucking...it seems like proportions look better on me when I do it.

Haha, excellent answer! It's funny that a semi-tuck is a new thing for your office mates. Can't believe a guy tried to "fix" your top for you, though! Glad you stuck to your guns.

I've been semi-tucking my tops since I was old enough to judge proportion. We're taking 30 years, I think (and I'm not exaggerating!). It's not like it's a new fashion fad.

I like the semi tuck for many of the reasons mentioned and no one has said anything to me. I'd be horrified if some male colleague started touching my clothes but I suppose it depends on the relationship. I often do with a jacket unbuttoned over the semi tuck so you probably don't notice so much.

My own 13-year-old daughter rejected my semi-tuck a few weeks ago. Admittedly, I don't semi-tuck very often, but it worked well with the top I was wearing and I liked it. She just looked at me doubtfully when I tried to explain that it was supposed to be like that. Of course, she is at the age where she doesn't approve of very many of my sartorial choices (but does sometimes want to borrow my shoes!).

When I used to visit my parents in places where they were doing a sort of development work, local volunteers would straighten my clothing. One jacket, with a collar and "lapels" that weren't meant to lie flat, especially frustrated their secretary. She suggested I take it back and exchange for one that was made correctly. It was the most dressed-down "third piece" I had at the time, so she was perplexed repeatedly.

I've been seeing the look online for years and since in in a college town, I do see it out and abt. Admittedly more icon students but they are everywhere so the look is everywhere.

I actually just bought 3 blouses and fully intend to employ the semi-tuck. I've tried this a time or two but I dont think I made it out the house. I'm a SAHM so Im often dressing for myself and family.
The real test is when we fly home for the holidays. These blouses will definitely be packed so I'll be employing the semi-tuck.
Im sure my grandmothers won't get it but they are both into their 80's. My parents are probably no strangers to the look bc they work in a high school.
We'll see what other family and friends think.

My husband pulled out my semi-tuck (as I was walking into church) one of the first times I tried it. Thought he was being helpful!

I use it a lot, but only with certain tops that drap as I want them to. I like the suggestion of a waistline that it gives, and it also adds a bit of length to my short legs.

Been there. My old boss once told me I had not tucked in my shirt completely thinkin he was helpful. I jus answered thanks and wen on my way. at least you tried to school the poor guy.

I just want to add, for those of you who seem puzzled at the idea that a colleague could "scold" me and try to touch my clothes, that in my office the relationships are very friendly and the whole talk about semi-tuck was led in a joking way.

Yes, the semi tuck is highly misunderstood by many. My parents will tell me to finish tucking my shirt if they see it!

It's sloppy looking to many. I think it's an adjustment that we have adapted to, but it's a style insider view.

Maybe this is how we can recognize each other on the street! Semi-tuck, give a wink, get a wink back, YLF member. Get a dirty look, run!,
