Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

MOTG formula tops

I'm popping in quickly with a question about top options for the MOTG formulas. My main problem last winter was my lack of interesting layering pieces (tops not cardigans) and I felt my outfits were alright but lacked a certain punch. I've been reviewing all the MOTG outfits and the tops are all from online venues I don't frequent but those are exactly the types of tops I feel I am missing in my wardrobe.

I apologize if this question has been asked recently as I haven't been on-line very much recently, but here goes...where does one go to find unique, fun and practical layering tops?

My favorite is the Vivienne Westwood black and white top on the MOTG outfit #2.

Thanks!!

I find a lot of things at Target, Old Navy, JC Penney's (did you see the white shirt that I recently posted about?), Ross, Sears and Kohl's. My local shopping options are pretty limited (as is my budget), but I always manage to find things.

I think such tops are all around, at every price point, and it's more of a matter of training your eye to see them when you shop. If you want a knit top, I would suggest not bothering to spend the sort of money for something like that Vivienne Westwood top! The problem is that knits don't last very long.

This is one area that it makes a lot of sense to scour discount places like Target, Forever21, and H&M. I have also had good luck at Banana Republic - pricier, but they do hold up nicely, but I'd wait to hit a sale and use coupons. Add in Ann Taylor, but once again, wait for a sale.

I tentatively would add Ann Taylor Loft, my only issue with them is that in the past year or so, I've had too many tops bleed or shrink or pill too quickly. :-(

Anthropologie has nice, interesting tops but they are expensive (though still cheaper than that VW top).

Urban Outfitters is worth a look.

A woven blouse will last you longer, though it may seem too dressy for MOTG lifestyle, or impractical. But if you want your clothes to last longer, this is the way to go. More and more, I'm adding these types of tops and skipping the knits, because I can't justify a top that I need to replace a year later. You can find "silk-like" tops that are machine washable. Just read the tags carefully.

I think out of all my knit tops, the Banana Republic ones have held up the best. I am not surprised, as I still have a layering tee that I've owned for well over 5 years that still is going strong. I don't know what it is about their tops that last so well. It's not all of their knit tops. The ones like this are probably a safe bet:
