Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

More on winter shoes...

This is a real conundrum for me - and I was wondering about shoes that are appropriate for winter - something that isn't a boot, but that could still be worn with socks and/or trouser socks. I get that ballet flats and loafers shouldn't really be worn with socks, but at the same time - I'd like a comfy shoe that can be worn with jeans and trousers without bare-naked feet.

I mean, a non-boot option. Oh, and not a high-heel either. I don't ask for much, do I? :-)

Is there such a thing?

Why are you opposed to boots, Sara?

When you think about boots are you maybe thinking about tall boots? What about booties? They could work well with pants and still be casual. I'm thinking of the Aerosole booties that Angie posted about last year - those looked great.

Hmmm. Perhaps Julie is right. Did you mean no knee-high boots? Boots come is ALL SORTS.

These booties are beautiful. Sorry about the price, but I’m into comfortable, good looking Euro shoes because my feet are very fussy. I’d rather get one fabulous expensive pair than 3 cheaper, mediocre pairs :

I have to echo the other ladies that boots are a good option that come in SO many styles and types that you should be able to find something that suits you.

Another vote for booties/ankle boots. I personally really like sliver wedges :)

Do you like brogues? here's a link and I think they may be a solution

I love them to offset the feminine/romantic items in my wardrobe.

I also second booties or shoots as we call them in the UK.

How about Oxfords? They come up the foot quite high so could be worn with socks x

Another vote for brogues, oxfords or jazz shoes! I've got umpteen pairs and I LOVE them- they're stylish, practical and can be very edgy, depending on what you wear them with. I like wearing my jazz shoes almost more than my boots or booties, actually :)

Thank you!

I'm not opposed to boots - I just received a new pair of 'booties' but they have a rather high-ish heel on them, and all my other new shoes are of the ballet flat variety. I'll admit - I'm one of those who'd wear loafers or even ballet flats *with* socks. A faux pas to be sure. Last year, I wore my favourite black patent Mary Jane ballet flats with socks from Wal-Mart. (eek).

I'm going to keep an eye out for some flat/very low-heeled boots and things like oxfords and such. Or look for what they are calling 'shooties', or 'shoots' as RoseandJoan mentions.

Closed shoes with socks, closed shoes with socks, closed shoes with socks. (trying to make it sink into my head).

I'm in the same position as you! I don't wear heels over 1.5" except for special occasions and I've found it impossible to find non-chunky, feminine low-heeled boots. My solution has been to stick to low-heeled pumps and hose. Believe it or not, they're incredibly warm!

I also don't like going through winter without socks, and while I love wearing boots, don't want to wear them every day. This is not something I have resolved yet and mostly resort to wearing my oh so comfortable orthotic fitting Kumfs shoes which do not meet with YLF style approval. I love the idea of wearing what we in Aus call brogues and sounds like what people here are calling oxfords. I wore them every day in the late 80's!

Next year I think I will need a new pair of everyday orthotic friendly shoes, and that may well me a look I will go for - that or Mary Jane, if that can be worn with socks.

I don't understand why loafers cannot be worn with socks - I just bought a pair that has a pretty high vamp:

I wore them today with trouser socks, dark bootcut jeans, a black and white striped cowlneck top and a red canvas jacket. I suppose it worked since my jeans were bootcut because you really couldn't see that was wearing trouser socks at all.

I used to wear stacked heel (3" heels yikes!) oxfords all the time in the 90's. Wish I could find a cute pair with a lower heel.

Oh, I also have a pair of mary jane wedges that I wear with socks - under bootlegs or wide legs.

Shana, loafers with high vamps can be worn with socks.
