Moby Dick, or the elusive white tux jacket -- K/R

Well, I've been on the hunt for the white/ivory tux jacket for awhile.

In fact, this is the fourth iteration. (So don't think you're the only one up close and personal with UPS and Fedex.)

Version one was an Equipment blazer I delayed too long on and couldn't find in my size after going one smaller. I did post on it. Version two was from Reiss and the fit on the one in a size up from my usual was still too small in the waist. Looked bad but I was afraid to size up further for baggy bust reasons. No photo. Version three was White House Black Market. Lapel was weird and it looked cheap. Neither two or three was even worth a K/R

This one in the photos is J Crew. Quality is very nice (it's mostly wool) but there are three points on which I am specifically soliciting opinions:

Stance is low and jacket longer than I would usually wear. Too long for a short person such as myself?

Sleeves are pre-sewn to look rolled up and are bracelet length. Generally I like this length, but as you'll see in my quickie try on over anything photo, long sleeves hang out.

And finally, it's got this odd little ribbon tie in the back. The website says either tie it back there or around your waist. The front waist idea is terrible on me. But is the tie in back an un-fixable deal breaking mess? (I'd be prepared to pull it out entirely.)

Wow, I feel the pain of the jacket hunt. Too long, too short, not enough this or that. Story I know well.

Hmm-I don't think it's totally too long but I'm not sure it's your "best" length, if that makes sense. The jacket looks a little big or BF style and I think (not very good here) that while that is more on point than something more fitted, this jacket on you looks a little big in the shoulders and overall.
I struggle with permanently 3/4 or bracelet sleeves--ruched or sewn or just short. It is a great length for my style--keeps a jacket from looking overwhelming or frumpy, but then is limiting. So for that I think you have to know how you'll wear it. For summer it's no problem with short sleeves. i don't think they look right over long sleeves.

The ribbon is so not useful! That would bug me unless it's totally removable.

I think this is not exactly your fit, but look forward to other more discerning eyes.

I want to tell you I love it, because I know the agony of the hunt! But it looks a litlte in between - not a tailored fit, not boyfriend-y. Plus, why the ribbon? WHY? I will keep my eyes open for something that might work for you if you decide this is not a keeper.

not loving it for your super fab style. it's a bit boxy, but not in a flattering on-trend way. maybe it's the 3/4 view that is throwing me and a full on view might be different.

I absolutely detest the ribbon (so sorry to be so blunt)! Did the designer have a 3 year old daughter playing dress-up that was used for inspiration?

It has some merits, but maybe not enough to make it worthwhile. They may not be tuxedo style but I recall seeing nice Blazers in this color by Smythe, and Theory. I would hold out, this is such a classic item, that there will be others. Wait to find the exact one that you love.

I think 3 questionable features are too many for this to be "the" jacket for you. That ribbon, unless it can be removed, is a deal breaker for me. Sorry. I know that feeling of trying and trying to find the one that works.

This looks like a nice jacket and I think the length works on you, but that ribbon thing. What were they thinking? Your white jacket is still out there. I suspect that if you keep this one, you will still be looking for a better one.

So disappointing, but that ribbon thing would drive me insane with fury. Ditto the sleeves. I actually like a bracelet length sleeve but in winter it's a little nuts.

Darn shame, though. You need a gorgeous white jacket.

Oh, Lisa. I can so relate to the challenge! But I have to agree with all and with your DH. That ribbon!!! So unlike JCrew! What a weird and wimpy little detail. For shame.

What did you think of kkards's options? So gorgeous, especially that Theory one, although I did not check the price (too afraid).

Agree with most of the others...too big, too long, the sleeves, the ribbon, un-fab. I know you've benn on the hunt for a while. You'll find it, eventually.

Ok another non-fan of the ribbon...but sounds like you've already sorted that out. I am soooo bad with blazers so I have no advice. But keep looking - white looks so fresh & crisp. Good luck with moby....

The fit is really nice on you, I think. Agree, though, that the long ribbon is a bit weird. You know, you can find small brass buckles (the sort that go on the backs of men's suit vests) in notions departments. Shortening the ribbon to work with a menswear buckle instead of a girlish bow could make all the difference.

That's an interesting idea of tulle's. Or maybe the ribbon can just be dispensed with entirely?

I would accept the ribbon/removing it/adding a buckle if this were from F21. But J.Crew? No. I usually scrunch my sleeves but would not want a permanent scrunch or roll on a wool jacket. What were they thinking?

You deserve better. You can do better. (But it will take some effort, obviously!) Please don't settle. Ummmm, you may have to when it comes to price. . . .But actually, a higher priced quality jacket may withstand the extra dry cleaning better than a lower quality one.
