I will write a post later about our trip to Melbourne (it was spent at the Aussie Tennis Open in the main part, with a couple of trips to see friends, and a little bit of shopping/sightseeing).
Seb and I spent Friday in Melbourne city, with the morning spent around Lonsdale and Bourke Streets, catching the tram down Bourke St Mall. We were in Bourke Street on the other side of Swanston when the tragedy happened and suddenly the area was swamped by police cars, ambulances, and later on helicopters.
We did not see the car, and were not in danger ourselves, we were about 250m away from the scene, but of course the people who have died (now 5) were people like us - enjoying a lunch break, a spot of shopping, and the school holidays.
Melbourne is a wonderful city. In the stress from the incident I left my wallet in a public space. It was returned to me via a friendly stranger who handed it in to the Train Station Customer desk, cash and cards intact. The lovely Greek taxi driver shared his cake with Seb and myself seeing I was upset.
