Making clams out of jeans?

Has anyone tried to make their own clams out of an existing pair of jeans from their closet?
I am purging closet and have so many pairs of jeans - most likely don't need them all - and in interest of "science" and saving $$$ was wondering if they can be recycled.
I am thinking a straight leg would be most effective but wondering if there have been trial and errors previously?

Marianne and April have made clams out of jeans (coincidentally, both pairs once belonged to me!). Theirs were both really skinny though, not straight legs. If you're getting rid of them anyway, it might be worth a try.

With straight leg jeans I think they would end up being more like walk shorts since the opening at the knee is wider. They would be cute too.

I have made clams from straight leg jeas. It worked great for me, but mine were tight on my leg from the knee up. Here's a picture of me wearing them:
