Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Looking for styling help with denim biker jacket

I saw how cute Nicole's denim jacket from Armani Exchange looked on her (and the great discounted price) and when I tried it on and saw how awesome it looked and felt, I snapped one up for myself. The cut is SO curve-friendly!
The problem is, I'm a little bit lost about how to style it. I like Angie's suggestion to wear biker jackets with jeans and ruffly/girly tops - but I don't think that works when the jacket itself is denim. I'm so unsure when I try out a look that is more "trendy" than my usual look, and I would love some advice on how to make this jacket part of a fab outfit.

Here are two attempts to style it:
Casual: (scroll down a bit for the pictures WITH the jacket)

Again, wasn't sure about denim over denim, but I wanted to try the jacket with skinny pants/boots and these are the only ones I own.
I wasn't sure whether it worked or not, but the day after I wore it, my boyfriend mentioned out of the blue that he had really liked the look - "especially hot".

Business casual:

Paired it with a button-down blouse and scarf over trousers.

Do either of these looks work? What else should I try?

Hi Kari, that jacket looks amazing on you. I wouldn't wear it with jeans, not even skinnies. But it looks great with pants.

I would also wear it with: dresses, any skirt that is not denim, any type of non-denim pant - especially micro checks.

For casual wear - I'd try it with micro check pants, graphic tee, pearls and Converse.
In the evening I would toss over a girly dress and cute shoes. For smart casual it would look great with a printed skirt and knitted top. Or corduroy skirt and turtleneck, with boots, if it's colder.

Tanya, thanks a million for all of the suggestions. I'm mentally weeding through my closet to figure out what I have that fits with your ideas. I'll have to keep playing with it.

(And yay, I'm glad the jacket works on my figure. Thank you!)

Yes I think it looks awesome on you! I really liked it with the dress pants and scarf, though I agree with you it probably looks better unzipped.

I especially like the idea of the jacket with a pretty spring/summer dress. Something maybe a little more feminine to offset the dark structure of the jacket. Like a floral print maybe, or a floaty material. I was just noticing Old Navy has alot of nice spring dresses, and there is a 30% off coupon floating around.

Hmm, I don't really have any floral dresses, but I have a few fun spring dresses that I'll have to try it with. May have to wait a few months, though - it's very cold and wet here right now.

Thank you for the additional ideas!

The jacket looks great on you, as it does on Nicole. What a nice denim jacket for curvy gals. I like it best when it is worn with something other than denim on the bottom. I think everyone seems in agreement on that one. I love the way you have accessorized it in the pictures. I bet as spring rolls around you will be wearing it all the time with dresses, clam diggers, pants or shorts. It looks really nice with the scarf in the picture.

Hi Kari

I haven't anything new to add really, but I just wanted to say you look fantastic in your new jacket AND I loved the business casual outfit (and the scarf, love it!)!

Since you say it's still cold in your neck of the woods: how about pairing it with a (non-denim) pencil or A-line skirt and knee-high boots?

Kari,

The jacket looks awesome on you! I love the business casual look. I have nothing to add except that I think there was some discussion about wearing denim with denim if you were wearing a dark denim jacket like this with white denim clamdiggers for example. I believe that got the O.K. so that's another possibility - white denim skirt or clamdiggers...

San, Inge, and Shana, thank you for chiming in with other suggestions! I think I definitely have outfits that would work for bus-cas attire. Casual wear might be a little trickier - I might have to branch out and purchase some new pieces, but I'm also also very low on summer/warm weather clothes in general (clam diggers, casual skirts), so I may just have to make room for it in my budget. I really appreciate the great ideas.
