Long Poncho For Short Gals?

Hi,
I just adore ponchos and have a few I sported often last season. Needless to say I was quite happy to read about big ponchos for this season. And since Angie mentioned I must get one, well I am only to happy to comply.

Since I'm only 5'3" I'm curious, just how big should a short gal like myself go for a poncho. To the knees? The calves?

Links are especially helpful! Especially any ponchos in softer tones as I've been shifting away from blacks to browns as a core color in my wardrobe.
And as a side note, I just picked up this sweater/jumper from Nordstrom and am in love with this blush color. in person it is much nicer than online. It also has a fun neckline.

Lisa...i'm 5'2" (in the morning). i've worn several ponchos to the knee asymmetrically, to the mid-thigh, to sort of mid thigh, and at the upper thigh.

depends on the cut, shape and drape of the poncho / cape thingy.

ps...i am crushing on the tibi one. i feel like i want to try it on even knowing that i will be SWAMPED with it.

I was HOPING that bj1111 would chime in. She wears ponchos with flats and is shorter than you are, Lisa. She is a great inspiration.

The trick is the asymmetrical hem. You DON'T want it to be straight and long. The hem has to be broken up to prevent the "swamp". May I suggest sticking to neutrals and heading over to Zara first.

(And nice blush sweater).

Thanks for asking this question, Lisa! Bj's visuals are incredibly helpful too--all in one place. I think I had a rather hazy understanding that an asymmetric hem is the key to making a longer poncho work but now I'm sure. Be sure to post your findings! I promise to do the same if I find one!

I was looking at ponchos online last night and didn't find anything that wouldn't swamp me - and I'm 5'2" with a medium frame. Imagine what it would be like to be a small-framed petite!

I'm 5'1 with a medium frame and fairly broad shoulders. The poncho I wear the most is actually quite short in the front hits around the belt line (more like a shark-bite hem)- most of the volume comes from the side, which I think helps.

Angie-Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for an asymmetrical hem. And I adore ht blush sweater. It's soft and has a nice weight to it.

Kellygirl-Of course, I will be happy to post what I find. Just have to take a trip to the mall.

Bettycrocker-I agree, it can be easy to be swamped by a poncho. I'm planning to look for less bulky materials to help reduce the swallow me up factor.

N-Marie-I remember that WIW and that poncho is a great color. I do think the shark bite hem really helps too. Thanks for posting a link to your WIW.
