Long jacket and Vince dress try-on

I'm not sure either one of these are meant for me. I welcome your opinion in case I'm just not seeing something.

The long jacket is so nicely made and a perfect color for me, but in a M the hip fits just enough but the top seems big. Also, I'm not sure I can casualize/rock'n'roll it up enough to suit my needs. Thoughts?

The Vince dress pictured here is a size too small for me. Its a 6 and clearly just barely fits my hips but fits fine through shoulders and bust -- obviously the story of my life (my hips will forever be the bane of my shopping existence). I'm not sure I love it enough for me to try ordering in the 8 (none available in store). It would be a tunic on me, not a dress. I love the color but not sure it's worth it. What do you think? I'm feeling very picky but don't want to pass by something if I'm just not seeing the potential.

Ooh, Janet - the colors are both fantastic on you.

I buckled and ordered the Vince dress in a 6, hoping it will work for TIFF. I don't see hips on you here, but I don't think it's exactly right either. I would love to have hips, BTW.

The teal jacket looks fabulous to my eye. It IS pretty straight up and down though. How does it look open? That's how I'm mostly planning to wear it. I feel like it's one of those items that looks so perfectly well made and elegant that it doesn't even require edging up (similar to Burberry, Smythe, Theory and the like). The edge lies in the color and quality somehow. But I'm biased, of course. I love the length on you.

Hi Janet - nice to see your face here again I'm sorry to say I'm not feeling either of them on you. The coat is too plain and boxy - just too basic for you. And the dress? it's just the length that isn't right to my eye - needs to be a lot longer on you.

Those colors are so beautiful. I've made many buying mistakes because I couldn't turn down the color. I think both are both going to overwhelm your top if you order a size up. Remember there's going to be lots of fall/winters goodies coming in the next few months. I'm preaching the same message to you I'm preaching to myself.

Same here--gorgeous colors but not quite right fits.
The dress is too boxy and too short, short is kinda secondary, in that you can really rock some waist definition and so I don't think the style is among your best. The jacket I could see, but I had similar "pear" issues, though you've got a stronger shoulder line and can carry it. I think it lookds best open and for me it would have actually had to work as a lightweight outdoor coat, which may not be what it "wants" to be.

The colours are gorgeous, Janet, but I don't think the cuts are right. I can see the jacket worn open -- but wonder if you would use it, or would you tend to reach for your longer BCBG (which is so incredibly flattering on you, always). And the length of the Vince isn't right for a dress and somehow it doesn't feel right for a tunic, either.

Keep in mind that sometimes it is really really hard to tell when items are not styled. If you were in love, I'd say go home and try them out. But if you are not, I wonder if it is worth it. You'll find pretty things to splurge on down the line.

What Suz said...loving the colors but feel the particular cut isn't working. Those are the two pieces I fell for but didn't order...my lifestyle doesn't warrant. It's interesting because the dress looked as if it would be longer:(

The cleavage factor on the dress is worrying me for myself too - but the sleeves look so much less sheer on you than the model!

The Zella capris are pure awesome.

I'm here. Just got back from working with a client and attending to Little Sam.

Both pieces are a tad snug on the hip, which has nothing to do with your gorgeous figure, but everything to do with the too straight cuts on these items. Onto something better.

How do the Zella capris compare to the Athleta Prima capris from last year?

I love those dresses, Angie, but I resisted trying those on because really don't need any more dressy floral fitted dresses -- I already need to find more occasions to wear the one I got last year!

Peri, the Zella capris are similar to the Athleta ones, but actually even more comfortable. The rise is a little longer in the Zella ones.

Janet, I agree with others on the jacket. I think it looks good on you and would be totally wearable open in this size, but no, I don't see it rocking and rolling with you.
I do see potential for the dress in a size up, judging by where the shoulder seams on this size are hitting you. I think you could go a size larger and it could work nicely. The next size might be a tad longer, too, and that could be long enough to wear as a dress. I can see this dress fitting your style better. I totally get not being in the mood to reorder, though. I'm there with you! Especially given that many things I've bought at NAS in the last couple of years have been back on sale, and often reduced further, in a matter of weeks.

The colours are great but the shapes are too straight....I too want the perfect casual but smart dress, such a hard thing for an hourglass!

I prefer the jacket to the dress. I see a hint of pulling in the first pic but none in the second, and as AG says you might wear it open more often than closed. Although if you've already decided to save some money I don't want to enable you more. Just saying that the teal is your color and might be a great way to build a get-up and go type outfit with skinnies or flares.

As for the dress, I appreciate your review because you are saving me money. This dress would not fit me at all. The v looks really deep too, I think you have a short torso like I do and I have to wear outfit-ruining camisoles with one of my other Vince dresses like this.

Denise, there is a button at the neckline that is not closed in that photo, so you may be able to wear that dress more successfully. But yes, we do share the short torso issue! I'm especially short from bust to shoulder so lots of necklines are a bit low on me.

I like the jacket, but I don't love it, even unbuttoned. The "buttoning" thing is tricky too, because of the magnetic closures -- if I close them, they open when I walk, and if I leave them open, eventually when I move in such a way that the edges meet, they'll randomly shut when the magnets get close enough to catch. I'm also not enamoured of the bracelet sleeves. That's ok, more money saved!
