Her guidance is wear leggings as an accessory not instead of pants. I always think if i wouldn't wear a top with tights (hose) i won't wear it with leggings. Re skinny jeans i think it depends on body shape as to how short you can go with the top x

Sigh. I've seen a million people wearing leggings as pants and I'm not sure what to think of it! It sort of looks like you wore your yoga clothes outdoors... with a dressy top. Odd. I would never do it (nor could I ever do it with my body type!)

That is bad taste, not a trend. Did YOU like this look?

Just because you see lots of people doing it doesn't mean you should follow suit.

I see many of my art students doing this. As skinny 18 year olds, it is not that bad a look although they are usually doing it for attention from boys(I think). It looks trashy over a certain age. I think very skinny jeans or knit pants can be tasteful and hip depending on your body type. I would wear them just like jeans as long as the material was substantial. The tops would be the same length I would wear with other jeans.
I would never wear leggings alone with a shorter top.

I would never ever ever wear leggings with a shorter top as they are an accessory rather than pants to me. However I have no problem wearing my skinnies with a shorter top. I just make sure the top is a 'pants-length' top and I think it's absolutely fine.

I don't particularly care for the look, it just seems to be everywhere nowadays. Sometimes it looks good if the material is substantial and the girl has a great body. Other times it's frightening.

Would you go up to a total stranger and tell her that her leggings are see-through? This happened last week when I walked past a woman with leggings and a short top and I could see her panties! I still feel bad that I didn't say anything to her.

No matter how toned or youthful your figure, this can go wrong in oh so many ways:

- camel-toe
- panty lines
- see through
- cellulite

Of course, I go out running in running tights, which are essentially leggings, and a short exercise top.... but that's a different story!

I still feel weird wearing shorter tops with skinny jeans. I think those work better with a longer top too. Not necessarily a tunic, just longer than what I wear with bootcuts and wider legged jeans.

I am with Dawn - leggings are only worn with longer tops- at least mid-thigh, as an accessory. I do wear skinny jeans with shorter tops, but they are not that short - they usually hit at the base of the jeans zipper.

I have seen one or two women wear thick tights as pants and it looked OK because the tights were thick and not see through. I do think it is a bad idea in general to wear leggings as pants.
The last time leggings were in style we did wear them as pants. I remember wearing sweaters that hit at my hip with leggings and this seemed OK to me at the time. Maybe I just didn't know better, but I do now.

Leggings are to be treated like an accessory. Maya, where is that hilarious leggings site? The one where you see people wearing leggings as if they were pants?

As far as skinnies go (jeans or pants), I have no problem wearing them with tops that finish a few inches above crotch point.

Maybe the line between leggings and pants is becoming unclear. Now leggings are being made to look like pants and maybe that's what I'm seeing. Maybe I just can't tell the difference between a skinny pant and a legging if the leggings are not see-through.

I'm bitter... I'm not skinny enough yet to wear skinnies : (

I remember this happening the last time that leggings were really big. At first they are more of an accessory, and then people go all crazy and wear them as pants. I don't liek the look even on a young, toned body. They are just not designed to be worn that way.

One of the mum's at work today had on opaque tights with a short t shirt! You could see her knickers through them! I had to go and politely point it out and suggest that the voluminous tunic she had on the day before with wide leg trousers! would look fantastic with the tights x

I have to admit as i walked away i thought my god that could have turned out sooooo badly! luckily she was thankful i'd told her she was just gutted this was 3.30pm so she'd been like it all day!

I agree with everyone, but I should say I've been seeing a lot of it as well. Not anything blatant, like see-through and underwear lines, but thicker leggings worn as pants. There is one person I see almost daily who is doing it all the time, and she's quite trendy overall. I would never have the guts to bring it up though. :)

We must have a glut of them at my school, Angie look away now! a casual member of staff wears leggings, short top and UGGS!! Argh and i don't have the confidence to mention it to her she's not the sort you mention these things to!!!!!
