Leather mini skirt - Yes or No?

I'm thinking that one of my silhouettes for winter can be a short A line skirt + leggings/fleece lined tights + ankle boots.

I've never worn skirts and dresses before in winters. I have zero tolerance for cold. But if I can get the silhouette right for the beginning/end of winter when temperatures are not extreme, I may be successful. Plus, I'm really excited to try this silhouette, Atleast.

A lot of Fabbers commented that I should try faux leather or leather look leggings. I'm thinking - how about a leather look mini skirt, which I could pair with fleece lined opaque tights and heeled ankle boots? Would it be 'too much'? Too 'pretending I'm in my early 20'? Would it even look good on me?

Pic #1&2 are just for inspiration. The skirt I have in mind would look more like #3.

Look love to hear your opinions.

I do not at all think you need to be in your early 20s to pull off this look. That's crazy talk. I vote yes.

GIRL, we are on the same wavelength I swear. I was just looking at some leggings that are ponte knit with a faux leather inset.

I think as long as you layer the skirt for coverage underneath (and for you, warmth too) it would be fine.

The only thing I am wondering for me - and probably you need to ask yourself this too - is: is leather too hard edged for our classic style? I am pondering this now myself.

I bought a faux leather skirt from Express earlier this year and love it! It is kind of a schoolgirl style, with large pleats. I am 42 and do not feel that it is inappropriate. I too am going to try the silhouette you mentioned for the less harsh winter days--shorter skirt plus heavy tights plus booties, with a sweater for the top. Definitely go for it, and have fun!

Thank you, ladies! Jenn - I'm glad to hear that you don't have to be 20 to rock a leather skirt! I mean - it should be a classic, like a denim skirt!

@abc - the skirt I have in mind doesn't feel hard edge to me AT ALL. I will opt for a classic A-line, like image 3. And I may hunt for a brown leather, if I find one. If not, I don't mind black at all. The way it's styled here in these 3 photos, it looks pretty timeless and modern classic.

My sister just gave me my bday gift - a lovely grey sweater I'm keen to wear with the skirt!! So excited!

To me, the leather mini paired with opaque tights and either flats/boots is a timeless look, and appropriate for all ages. Merino wool tights, by the way, are both warm and water-repellent, and quite suitable for both rainy and snowy conditions.

A worthy goal, for sure.
I do have a sugar/poison eye for certain lengths with certain styles, and especially with black leather--I think there is a "sweet spot" based on the cut of the skirt and one's body type. That's somewhat based on conventional wear-occasions and not what might be targeted for certain date-nights! So, there's "short" , and there's "major mini"! Then of course other elements work with that, such as a boxier top and flat boots. Color softens things--brown or burgundy are more "approachable"--but can be hard to find, as there are more options in black.

I think if you're going to pair it with grey, the skirt might be better in black. Also, I'm fairly certain that faux black looks better than faux brown. I could be proven wrong though.
If you don't find an a-line one, I think a straight cut might also work.
This is pretty exciting, because I'm sure you'll rock this look.

I think the modern way to wear a leather mini is with a flat boot. Nothing with a heel, or it veers into , uh, inappropriate looking, if you know what I mean. I love leather skirts - used to wear them all the time. If I ever found one in an A-line cut as opposed to all the pencil silhouettes out there, I'd absolutely wear one, but not as a mini. I'm old enough to be your mother - lol. Are you thinking of wearing this to work? I forget if you work, or if I even know what you do !

This skirt would be strictly for the weekend look. I don't go to office - I work from home. But I wear very comfy clothes at home - usually just jeans and sweaters in winters.

I get what you say about leather mini skirt plus heeled boots. I do want an A-line skirt and not something that barely covers my ass; I want a skirt that is a couple of inches above the knee.

I do have every kind of black boots imaginable (to me) so I'll try all of them with the skirt. In my opinion, the skirt may look inappropriate if paired with tall, heeled boots. I don't think it'll look too bad with booties. I guess I'll just have to try different boot styles with the skirt, once I find it!

I think the skirt may be like other leather items that need to be dry cleaned only. I didn't think of that aspect at all!!!!

All I have to say (or show) is this picture of the almighty Jen Aniston rocking a leather mini.
Guess what - she's 46 people.
Personally I think heels are fine, if the tights are thicker and not sheer.

I think it will suit you....A really fun winter look with tights and a cosy knit. I love the one pictured in pic 3.

The only thing that gives me pause is your climate - is it cool enough for long enough?

We have winters from Nov mid to Feb end. The really bad winter (when temperatures will go as low as 2-3deg C) lasts from mid Dec to all of Jan.

And this year, we were wearing winter wear in March too! Our winters vary a lot, but it's definitely cold for what feels like a long time Plus, I want to wear this combination even before it gets really cold.

I think it will suit you and look great! And it will be a really fun change. Your winters are probably much milder than mine, so you ought to be able to wear this silhouette quite a lot. And I think pairing leather with classic pieces is a great way to make it look and feel appropriate for any age. Go for it!!

I even suspect I might want to copy you....except for my fear that this might take us back to the dreaded "butt-vest" -- and if you want to know that whole horrid story, just type that phrase into the archives...you can try "skirted leggings" too and you'll eventually find my sorry thread.

Yes! I especially like #3. The look is soft and feminine, with the sumptuous looking leather, the pocket stitching, the A-line shape, and the soft sweater worn with it. I can see you wearing it beautifully.

Absolutely yes. Women of any age can rock a black leather skirt. I think you'll find it's much more versatile than leather pants.

Even I have a faux-leather skirt! One of my friends calls this outfit "schoolgirl with a twist." I like the idea of a shorter A-line skirt for you -- you could dress up or down.

Oh I love how you wear yours, Beth Ann! It looks very feminine and this photo reminds me I have tons of Blazers I could pair my skirt with too! I do have a lovely maroon tweed blazer....

So I read all your advice and with a huge smile on my face, I've ordered the leather skirt online. We'll see how it fits! I'm having a rather hard time shopping this winter. It seems like vanity sizing is taking over the retail industry!! It's skewing with otherwise tried and tested brands - I can't seem to figure out my size anymore! I wonder what is happening!

You can absolutely rock it! We do all have leather skirts here on the YLF, isn't it! Reminescent of 5-6 yrs ago or so, when trending. I do have mine, in a knee length pencil and wear it with booties, or suede long boots, sheers or opaques, but not really with pumps. I just don't feel them the same weight as my skirt is also lined, so very warm. I do it under coats and with sweaters, only-very rare a blouse or lighter top.

Yeps, give it a shot. Although I have to say I've found that A-line mini shape a bit difficult to wear. Your mileage may vary. Looking forward to seeing how it plays on you.
