Oh dear! The first pictures of me on YLF! I am a tall (5'10) pear (33/26/38), and have worn this outfit quite a few times. Now that I see the picture, I'm wondering if this is as flattering as I thought it was? Maybe i should invest in a full-length mirror!

Lovely pieces, LauraElizabeth! I especially like your sandals.
I'm no expert so I can't explain why, but for some reason something doesn't seem to "go" to me. Maybe I'm in a belt-happy mood, but maybe a skinny belt over the blouse would help?

Something seems off to me too, perhaps the way the shirt flares out around your hips and makes them appear wider?

I find that outfits look different in photos than when I'm just looking at them in the mirror. Why is that?

It does seem 'off' to me as well. It probably doesn't help that I propped the camera on a low fan at the other end of my office! I think I need to take posing lessons from shiny!

Is the blouse too long? The cropped cardi not cropped enough?

Sarbear1121, I like your idea about a belt. I've never worn one that wasn't in my beltloops, so I'll check the blog for belt entries... thank you!

Hi LauraElizabeth. I think you look nice in the picture. I do think that you could improve the outfit with a more structured blouse. By this I mean a collar or neckline that is more structured, more oomph in the shoulder area.

Good for you for posting, LauraElizabeth! I was nervous too the first time. I like the jeans and sandals on you! I agree that a top that hits at the hipbone with more drama in the shoulders/sleeves would serve you better.

Welcome Laura! Thanks for posting pics. We are adding to our TALL group on this forum rather rapidly.

Your jeans look fantastic! What brand are they? Love the pretty white thong sandals. Cardigan looks good too. Spot on.

The blouse is off for various reasons:

o It’s a tailored blouse that’s not very tailored. Volume will work, but with a voluminous blouse. This piece has no structure and your shoulder line is falling.
o The length is hitting you at your widest part
o Is that a grey cami you’re wearing? I like white or cream blouses best with white and cream camis. They appear to have more depth that way.

Belting the blouse with a wide waist cinching belt will shorten the length and provide structure. It’s worth a bash. But the blouse itself is not ideal. Broad shoulders are required to add structure to that top. In your case, Judy has you on route.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! It is great to get such constructive critiques - I felt a little nervous putting pictures up but you all have made me feel very comfortable!

The pants are cotton corduroy from J. Crew - I stalk the sale page and get the tall pants/shirts whenever they are reasonable for my budget. I was very happy to get these for $20! I will try a belt for this blouse and see if that rescues this top a little, and also pay a visit to a tailor. And Angie, you have a good eye - that little bit of cami is grey: thanks for the tip on colors!

Are we sure that Laura is a pear? I'm also 5' 10" (36/32/40) and I am a rectangle leaning every so slightly towards a pear. Perhaps the difference is that Laura has such a tiny, well defined waist? It seems as though Laura would want to emphasize her waist instead of hiding it with a flowing top.

Kyle, it's hard to tell if LauraElizabeth really is a pear from that particular photo (the blouse emphasizes her hips because of where it hits), but I'd say from her measurements she is pear shaped. LE's waist is more defined in proportion with her hips, which is what I think makes her tend more toward the pear shape than you do.

I agree with everyone else's suggestions, LauraElizabeth, and just wanted to say the J. Crew cords look great on you! I also love the view from your window--beautiful. Welcome to the forum!

Your shoulders are broader Kyle. This makes you less pear shaped than LE.

Welcome LE - I have yet to post photos and you're inspiring me to get my camera, computer, etc. all aligned so I can do this with little time investment once I set it all up. You look great and thank you for taking the first step so we can see what you look like

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and comments! I will be off to find a waist-cinching belt and play around with that... my husband walked in on me trying one of his black dress belts, trying to get an idea of what it would look like.

And Kyle, I had wondered about my shape too. I was a much more obvious pear a few years ago, but since I've gotten into a healthier lifestyle, I didn't know if it was my shoulders or my bust that defined what shape I would be since my hip measurement was getting smaller. Thanks Ana for the clarification!
