Last shopping spree (for a while at least)

To console myself over the microcheck pants debacle, I took my extra 20% off coupon to the Macy's sale on Friday. I bought basics like socks, tights, underwear (no photos of those) and a wide black belt, which I'll try with some outfits so no photos yet.

However, after reading all the coat threads, I just couldn't bear to wear my old too large light-weight trench another day. I bought this Kenneth Cole trench. It's black (not my favorite but Nicole's already ranted about that!) so I decided to jazz it up with red gloves and a red patterned scarf. Do I need a longer scarf?

Finally, I got the Halogen denim blazer at Nordstrom's. Right now I only have the cream jeans to wear it with. I haven't worn a denim jacket since I was in high school so I don't want it to just end up in my closet as an orphan. I'm hoping to get a gray pencil skirt and gray flannel pants for the winter and I think I can wear it with capris in the spring and summer. But the first question is -- is it a keeper based on style and fit?

First of all...I love you in the cream WHBM jeans! Great fit!

I like the denim jacket--I think it fits you well. I prefer it buttoned. Can you try unbuttoning the bottom button? I think you can have a lot of fun with this. You can wear it with dresses, skirts, dress pants. You can add scarves and pins. Love it.

I'm not sure about the trench. I think I just have a thing about black trenches now. I think the scarf is pretty, but it is a bit short to wear it looped like that. Is it possible that the trench is too big on you?

I'm not sure about the trench. I'm not sure what it is, but it seems to be overwhelming you. The scarves and gloves are a nice addition, but I'm not sure they solve what's bugging me about the trench. Maybe others will have more to say... or maybe Nicole is right in that it may be a touch too large...hmmm, don't know.

The jacket is very nice. I think you can get a lot of use out of it. I agree with Nicole to try it with some dresses. I've got a similar jacket that I think will be very versatile as well.

I love the cream bootcuts on you! How do they wear? Do they stretch out a lot or anything like that? I am planning on trying the WHBM cream straight legs, but the bootcuts look so good on you, I'm tempted to try those as well.

The trench feels like it fits very well -- unlike most mediums, the sleeves are actually long enough and the belt hits at my waist and not my rib cage. I think it is a pretty plain style, but it was under $100 (at 60% off) and I don't mind black if I can perk it up with colorful scarves and gloves. At the same time, even though I'd like to replace my light-weight trench, I don't want to buy a new one just to buy one.

Ana - I haven't worn the cream jeans because I'm still a bit dependent on YLF to make sure my new clothes actually fit me -- I am looking forward to wearing them this week. I'll let you know how they do.

AJ: I love the jeans and the denim jacket. Wow, those look great. I am surprised the WHBM pants are long enough for you. They don't come close to working for me length-wise.

I think you will be able to do a lot with the denim jacket.

My first reaction to the trench is that it was too big for you.

AJ - you are doing so well with your purchases! I love the jeans and the jacket - very versatile and you look awesome in them both. Unfortunately, I have to agree with the others on the trench - I can't pinpoint it either but it seems to overwhelm you. And yes, the scarf is too short worn that way - but mabye you could find a way to tuck it in so the length doesn't show.

hi aj - you are so fabulous! love the white pants - they look great with the denim jacket! as for the jacket, have you tried it on with your maximum possible layers? it does look a touch big in the shoulders as well as too full through the waist and bottom, but extra layers may help.

I’m in the minority. I feel the trench fits really well, aj. The black looks “very black” and as Sihaya puts it “overwhelming you” because there’s NO texture to this garment. Metallic buttons, a bit if sheen in the fabric, or topstitching would have made all the difference. But, it’s a flattering silhouette and a great fit.

AJ, I echo others' comments about loving the white bootcuts and denim jacket. Be sure to try the denim jacket over patterned dresses or skirts.

I like the trench on you ALOT. I love the scarf and gloves too. Angie pointing out the fact about the trench having no texture is an eye opener though. I guess the scarf and gloves give it a feel of texture. Really though overall when I looked at the picture I thought it was a great fit. I love it when a belt hits me at the waist rather than the rib cage. Doesn't seem to happen too often.
I love everything else you got too. Your style is 10!

AJ, now that I see the other photos, I think the trench is fine. Looks like it will serve you well.

I love the jeans on you, so flattering! And the denim jacket is great as well.

I actually also happen to like the fit of the trench, but it is a lot of black ( I have a black one too but it has slight sheen to it). Maybe you can try replacing the buttons , as Angie mentions?

AJ, I like both the trench and the denim jacket! They both are quite flattering. The trench reminds me of my black one which I bought last spring and have already worn so much that it's been worth the money. SOO versatile.
