K/R: VC tops and skirts

Pardon me for prevailing on you all so much in the last few days with so many posts. But my stuff has arrived and I could really use your considered judgements and thoughts.

Up for review, two VC banded tops and two of the tube skirts.

#1-5 shows the black top and the lapis skirt. The top is in XS regular. The skirt is XS. It is a bit loose around the waist but I don't think this necessarily matters. My concern is the top; as several others have said, the bands do not lie flat.

Interestingly, my husband, who was so annoyed at the little bump in the portobello skirt, does not find the bump in this top a problem at all! But it bothers me, so I think it needs to go back.

However, what do you think of the style and cut for me? Okay, or not? If it comes back into stock in XS petite, I could perhaps try it.

And the skirt. Do you think it would be better shortened? It is an easy thing to do with a good pair of shears because it's not finished on the bottom. If shortened, to just below the knee (as I show) or a bit longer than that?

#6-9 show the banded top in XS petite. This fits better and the bands do not bump out. But what do you think of this colour/ pattern for me? I will reserve my thoughts until I hear yours.

The skirt again in ink blue. This time I am showing it with booties so you can see how that looks. I probably wouldn't wear this with bare legs and dark booties (I'd probably add tights to tone it with the booties) but I wanted to see and show the effect and get your impressions on what length would work best.

#10 shows this with my black jacket. One interesting thing I noticed as I played around the closet was that the black jacket was the ONLY one that I could see wearing with this striped top. I simply don't have another that would look good with it. Hmmm.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts. I really only want to keep stuff that I am going to love and that moves me forward. So please give your honest thoughts.

By the way, in terms of comfort factor, these are all 10s. Super easy, comfortable pieces to have on.

Did you hike up the skirt and top on #5? If so - that length really works on you. I'd say keep it but make some length alterations. They look great!

I also really like the look of the striped top on you - especially with the black jacket on because it creates very interesting diagonal lines! Not so keen about the ink blue skirt with the boots, though but it will definitely look hot with a pair of pumps!

And... you can't go wrong with chic comfort!

I have the VC banded tee also Suz (in the teal stripe) and I admit, the bands curl a bit here and there but to be honest, it's not enough of an issue for me to not love the top.

I'm afraid because of the black, it's hard to see the fit or any of the issues in the first top. As for the teal striped one, I think the fit is fabulous and I really like the style and colour on you. I also think it looks really good with the black blazer.

The cobalt skirt is just fabulous on you - that colour is making me drool! Is that the petite length? It's funny - I really like the black skirt in the longer, original length with the Doc Marcies but for some reason, prefer the blue one shortened. I have no idea why - that's just what appeals to my eye.

Ms. KK - yes, I should have been more clear; in #5 I rolled the waistband to hike the skirt up.

Shannon, interesting about the top. I think the black one is bumping because it is too large, because it's not happening with the striped one. The cobalt skirt is not petite, no. In petite it only came in black, not a need of mine.

It might be the boots that are making you prefer the longer length in the ink blue. It changes up the proportions. But of course I want to wear both skirts with booties OR lower vamp shoes. Hmmm.

Whoops - the second skirt is ink blue, not black? My mistake. I think it looks equally good with the booties - I just have a soft spot for the Marcies :). Somehow the longer length in the darker colour works better than in the cobalt.

FWIW I vote to keep the teal striped tee and the ink blue skirt as is, and then keep the cobalt skirt but shorten. But again, I'm no expert so I would see what Angie says.

Suz, I like the length of the skirt in #5 a lot. That's my favorite picture of the lot! I think the black-and-blue combo is gorgeous, and the colors suit you to a tee. You Look Fab!

In pics 1-4, you look plenty glamourous, but not as drop-dead-ly so as in #5, and here's why: to my untrained eye, it appears that the skirt cuts off your gorgeous legs off at an unflattering length. But if, with a pair of shears, you can presto, change-o, and make the length more like #5, I vote KEEP.

I don't have a strong opinion about the tops - I can not see the curling issue on my monitor so it does not bother me :). I do think you look absolutely smashing in #10, with the black jacket.

Can't see the details on the black top, unfortunately, so can't help with that.

I strongly prefer the length of the skirt in pic 5, when you've hiked it up. I'd keep both of them if they work for your lifestyle.

The teal striped top is drop dead gorgeous.

So those are the Doc Marcies I keep seeing people mention? They look kick-ass. Are they comfy?

I really like the ink blue skirt on you in the first picture. I like the skirt a bit longer than in the hiked up picture and a bit shorter than full length so it is a midi but not quite so long, if that makes sense. I love the striped shirt on you and can't really see the curled up issues on my screen. I also like the skirts with the taller boots, which is a surprise to me. Not sure that muddle of thoughts helps!

The Doc Marcies are super comfortable for me, Ariadne, and would be really practical in Vancouver. The platform keeps the leather part off the ground so in rainy weather you feel perfectly fine wearing them. The only problem I have with them is that the tongue of the boot is forever shifting around on me. I think the shaft is just a bit wide for me or something; no amount of tightening will stop the problem. A few people suggested fixes for this to me that I will investigate further this fall.

Suz, I think you are right that the black one didn' t sit right because it is too big. I just got the same shirt in cobalt/black stripe. I tried one in small and it fit weird but XS laid perfectly. Love the teal one on you.

Another bunch of gorgeous pieces, Suz, both tops look fantastic. I can't make out the layers in the black top but it looks good from here. The skirt in 5 looks like the ideal length, too. Looks like you are adding some super chic workhorses to your wardrobe, all 10's in my book.

I'm with Shevia on the skirt length in 1-5 and the 6-10 outfit with and w/o the black jacket. My preference is for the shorter booties or the leopard shoes in #10, although the taller black boots work too. You could wear a potato sack and look adorable!

I love the skirts in the shorter length and with the shorter bootie. The top looks great on you! And the last outfit it fab. KEEPERS (with some alterations).

Basically, love everything on you; I prefer the skirt length in #5 and like the ink blue in the longer length. I love the striped top on you and wouldn't worry about only having the black jacket to wear it with. It seems reasonable that the black and green striped top would only go with a tailored black jacket (or the black leather jacket soon to arrive!), and you can't always expect every item to be able to mix with every other item in your wardrobe. I notice you didn't wear the boots with the blue skirt, it would be interesting to see if the length still looks off. Maybe having the skirts hemmed at different lengths would give you more flexibility.

Are you sure you can't squeeze in an afternoon with Angie while you're in Vancouver? Sigh, it would be such a great blog post...

both of your skirts are great colors, but the blue one seems a little too long, i think it makes you look a bit short (shorter maybe). i love the leopard shoes with it!

Love the shorter skirt length. If the top only works with X1 jacket I'd be sending it back. imo the shorter booties lengthen your leg more (in this pic) but the others look funkier - in a good way.

I love all of these on you and not only are they chic, I think you will get quite a bit of use out of them. I like the blue skirt shorter and the black one longer. I would vote keep on both tops. The stripe teal one will work without a topper with trousers and jeans. The black one looks great on the screen - but I cannot see the bumps. Love those new pumps.

I like the skirts at the slightly shortened length so they don't look 'droopy' on your gorgeous legs. Love the teal banded top on you!

Thank you, everyone - this is helpful so far. I think it might be tricky to figure out the sweet spot for length with these skirts, but it's an interesting idea to make them different lengths. There's really a lot of freedom with it because they are unfinished hems. I will have to experiment maybe with boots/ booties and the cobalt one.

Another concern I have is whether these skirts will be workable with tights. It just occurred to me that the jersey might stick and make it awfully uncomfortable. So I'm going to have to try them on for that. It doesn't make sense for me to own skirts that I can't actually wear in my dominant season. These would never qualify as "warm" but with tights beneath them and a coat overtop they could be okay for me (assuming I wasn't planning to be out for hours on end.)

Re the striped top - in addition to worrying that it only works with one jacket, I was concerned that the pattern was "wearing me." IRL it felt a bit too bold, and I thought it was washing me out. Husband and daughter did not see that because they found the top so interesting and fun, although when I asked hubs about it afterwards, he said maybe I had a point.

I was very tired (end of a tough day photos) and my hair needs doing, so that may have affected my perception. When I see it in the pics it looks somewhat better to my eye. So I guess I'll have to keep thinking it over.

Gingko - you have a good memory! And a visit with Angie MIGHT be possible. I am trying to work out whether there would possibly be time to do it - we are only there a brief period, and have to see many friends, so it's a bit tricky to organize. I sure would love to make it happen, though!

Suz I love the skirts but they are not hitting you at the most flattering part of your leg. The length in 5 appears perfect to me. The tops are great...I love them on you. I have a couple of similar skirts in a jersey that are a slim pencil cut and I can wear tights with them, however with one of them, my B44 like skirt, I do wear a slim fitting half slip underneath the skirt. I would. E keeping all of these pieces:)

Deborah, thank you for the slip wisdom. I do have a slip that would work if required. I wonder if it, too, would bunch up, though. I seem to remember this with skirts of this type in the past. Hmmm.

I love that cobalt blue skirt (shortened as in 5) with black on you - the top does look a bit big though. I'm not as crazy about the striped top version - I mean it's perfectly okay, but it doesn't "wow" me for some reason. Maybe I've just seen to many versions of that stripe pattern. If it doesn't go with your jackets, that's another thing to consider.

Not sure on the shoes (one of my weakest fashion points) but I think the booties with tights would be good if the skirt doesn't cling as you mentioned.

I love the tops on you, especially the teal striped one, as well as the skirts. The teal looks so good with the black jacket, and could you also wear it with a denim jacket (I can't remember if you have one)?

I do think it's a good idea to test the skirts out with tights - I have some skirts that can only be worn without tights, and they are, in fact, made out of jersey-type fabric. I haven't tried wearing them with slips of half-slips, though, since I don't own any.

Love pic 5 - with skirt that length and black VC top. Not completely sold on the VC black top for you - but I am picturing your new black moto jacket over this - and it will be fab.
Love the teal stripped top on you as well.
Not sure what length the ink navy skirt should be....I am too distracted by bare legs and booties to make a call on this.

Oh - and just think how easy all these pieces will be to pack - they wil roll away to nothing in your suitcase, and NO wrinkles. Does it get any better?

I agree the skirt needs to be shortened as you've shown it hiked up a bit. I think the original length is more leg shortening than your long tops and skinnies, which aren't shortening at all to my eye! I love the banded tops though having a hard time seeing the curling issues. Especially love with the jacket, but wouldn't you wear them alone too? You should - you look perfect in them.

About the skirt: You say the first one "bumps"? Return it. I really don't like the length except on pic5, but then you have to find a good seamstress who will respect the side curve. I don't like how it doesn't do your beautiful bod justice.

Ink blue is better (is it the same skirt?) in 8, and 9. I think the taller boots work best, but of course if you wear opaque tights then either would work.

It's just a question of proportion, something is bothering me.

Then (you're not going to like me!) I am not totally excited by the black top. It seems to me that the V is too wide. The fact that it V's in the back doesn't help. I know myself I'v had such V tops (with the front and back) and it always leaves me cold in the neck!

The striped top, however, look really good. Original, bold yet not "in your face". It could layer very well with a shorter, cropped jacket for example, and look fantastic over dress pants and a little heel.
