K/R: thrifted "equestrian"

I stopped by a thrift store yesterday and found a Ralph Lauren jacket. It was in the small section, but the shoulders look like they were cut wide. I took it home since it seemed to fit when I was in the store, and it even buttoned ok, although I would leave it open. It is 100% wool and it has these little buttons on it with a fox and a horn. I would need to stitch part of the liner, but otherwise, it seems in good condition. It was made in the USA, so based on a quick internet search, it is probably from the 1970's.

I think it highlights my shoulders and tooshie, but DH says I need to embrace my shape. lol.

Thoughts? I could try to play with it, or I can return it.

I agree with DH and I think you look great. The proportions are pretty much an hourglass. A local designer is selling something very similar right now.

What a find! I like it a lot on you. fix the lining so you don't feel you are wearing used goods, and I can see you making some sort of suede elbow patches in a contrasting color to modernize the jacket. What do you think of that? You could buy the ultra suede at a fabric store, then take it to your tailor and tell her what you want. What do you think? Could be fun!

OR: You could sew on some neat crest over one bust. Find something old, or quirky, or metallic!

You really look wonderful in this outfit. I suppose you could have the shoulders taken in a little, but I doubt it's worth the trouble.

I like it because it does fit your shape well-- --but has the one button, not a super-low stance but not buttoned-up, either.
Then the color looks fab with your coloring and the boots with the jeans.
I'd wear it open as a nod to more fluid fits, but it will still follow your curves.

One way I look at these items is whether they "make" an easy outfit or whether I've got to put a lot more into it--does it drag me in the wrong direction or lead me to add the wrong colors or styles to make someting work. To me it seems like you've got a fab outfit right there, and so if it were not expensive, it works well.
Sometimes also an item like this can serve as a trial or "gateway" item. If you really enjoy it and there turns up a new jacket that is similar but with improvements, you may feel like investing more.

Rachylou, I pretty much fill the shoulder line! lol. I think it is a miracle that it fits my waist too.

Unfrumped, very true. This was inexpensive. In fact, I found one of the buttons on ebay selling for more than what I paid for this jacket. I'm definitely keeping it as a vintage piece, and as a nod to a thrifted blazer that I wore through my graduate school years, and maybe a gateway. At a minimum, I can get it out of my system as I play with it. When I went for a walk, I popped the collar and put a scarf/handwarmers/hat on in colors that matched. It is lucky that I had those since I am down to just a couple of items on that front.

I love this jacket on you. What a great find! It really does highlight your shape in a good way and looks great buttoned. I like kary's idea of adding elbow patches. Enjoy!

It does fit you nicely, and I find it very flattering on you. Great find! The shoulders look a wee bit wide, but not extreme (as in an 80s way), so not a deal-breaker in my opinion. I'm wondering about the cuffed sleeves--it's a detail I haven't seen on a blazer before. You might hem the sleeves to remove the cuff, to bring it more in line with current looks. Or just go with it as a unique feature that you won't see on others.

BTW, I don't think the word "tooshie" gets used nearly enough, and that's a shame!

It's gorgeous. And it does highlight your shoulders and tooshie, which is exactly why it looks so fab. Gotta make the most of those curves!

Another way to frame "highlights shoulders and tush" (not that there's anything wrong with those!) is "highlights the waist".

Lucky find, Tania! (Ralph Lauren ca. 1970s--a fine vintage.) This jacket shape is truly fabulous on you. You might try a black (or maybe dark chocolate) turtleneck sweater & skinnies under it for a moodier effect a la Angie--great in Winter.
