K/R: olive linen culottes

These olive linen blend culottes from anthro arrived today (I'd tried the regular in the store, found them too long, and ordered petite).

I've tried them with various tops and shoes from my closet. What do you think? Note I am extremely unlikely to ever wear the midriff baring one irl! I mostly just took it so you could see how the waist fit.

I suspect given the fabric content that they'll stretch out a bit and relax. They are very comfy.

Honest opinions please! Are they JFE? I am unlikely to wear with heels much higher than 1 or 9 (both about 2").

In #2, they look like they're kind of grabbing you in the back, rather than just falling smoothly. Or maybe it's some kind of shadow thing going on. Everything okay back there?

Can i be honest and say I'm not in love with them on you? There is something weird about the exaggerated hem that isn't allowing the legs to drape softly. I agree with LavenderMoon that the back fit doesn't quite look right either. Sorry - Ive seen these in -store and didnt' "get" them there either. Might just be my inability to figure out culottes.

Diana I am sorry but I'm not loving the fit! I prefer a more fluid fit in a culotte. Do they feel comfortable?

Hannah, I think those outfits are my favorites too.

Lavender, all pants fit like this on my butt (grabbing the bottom a bit). It's just how I'm shaped. I'm fine with it. I do think the photo exaggerates it.

Ha, Lisa, the exaggerated flare is actually why I like them. I've been looking for extremely flared, medium or low rise, flat front culottes for a long time. But I don't want to settle for something that's not flattering....

I think they look fab! Those of us with pear-curves just have to accept that most pants are going to hug our, let's say, voluptuous rears and embrace the fit.

I think the relaxing that's pretty standard for linen and that you're expecting will help with the rear view, too (not that I think it's bad as-is).

I'm chiming back in to stay that these are a good fit at the back. The fabric is stiff and Diana has a curvy bottom. The back is "grabbing" Diana's bottom, but they are grabbing in the right way.

The fabric is rigid which means that they won't drape softly against the contour of the body. The stiffness of the fabric exaggerates the flare of the culotte. These are dramatic culottes. FWIW #4, 5, 6 and 9 look amazing to my eye.

I agree that they're dramatic; but I don't think they're flattering, and to me they look uncomfortable. But maybe it's just the photos, and in real life they're fine.

I love them, especially 4 5 6. I am not so keen on 8 and 9. I think that the shorter tops are better with them for flattery reasons with flat shoes. And to me they look great with the flat shoes.

I like them on you! The only outfits that gave me pause are 4 and 9, because I wondered whether the looks were too much toward fall or winter for linen. I'm glad to see Angie likes those outfits especially. (I've done something similar myself with dark taupe linen pants and wasn't quite sure about the combo.)
I was impressed with your daring to bare the midriff--and I like that look!--and then read your comment about showing the waist fit. The fit of the culottes is amazing on you, as if they were made for you.

I really love them, especially in 4. Are they *truly* stiff? I get the sense, with linen, that it tends to relax and stretch -- wherever it is under some tension (i.e. the bum) -- but could stay crisp and "stiff" in the places without tension (i.e. the flares) -- which to my mind would be a good thing with these.

Keep in mind I have a bit of a sugar eye for culottes. I also really like this particular olive.

Suz et al: no they are not really stiff, they actually feel quite soft. But they are definitely not the fluid, drapey type of fabric. It's a slightly thicker linen blend (I think linen, viscose, spandex) so I think the look and feel is almost like the modern soft stretchy denim. It's not really crisp but also not drapey.

Sharan, yeah I was not sure whether the boots outfits were seasonally confused, but I think the thicker fabric helps here. They definitely wouldn't work for winter but I think for fall they'll be ok. I'm glad you think the fit is good - since you sew, I know you have a good eye for fit!

Anna, I'm glad you like them! I think you have a really good eye for this type of thing. And I totally remember those 90s things!

Culottes are very hard to get right and you got it right. I think they look great on you Diana and we know that olive is a fantastic neutral.

to clarify - when I referred to the exaggerated hem, I was referring to the topstitched hem, which is a good few inches from the bottom, isn't it? Maybe I'm thinking of a different pair I saw in the store - and now that I click back on the find, it looks like a different pant . I retract my comment I'm not into culottes and will refrain from commenting. My eye doesn't get it.

Lisa, I think I know which ones you were talking about, now that I think about it. They had a really high waist and pleats, which are both terrible on me so I didn't even bother to try. These have a normal hem.

I can see these are a whole ' mother style from what I got used to, and are maybe JFE for trendy. I like # 4 top and might like to see other top options. They seem to call for something more refined even though they are more structured than drapey culottes.

I think they look great on you! I have been wearing them mostly as you have them in 1 and 6 and they have been fantastic this summer. I LOVE the big roomy leg. They have a great weight to them -- and you're right, they are not stiff; they do have some drape but the weight keeps them from being flimsy. They wash really really well, too, and the heft returns if you iron them after washing.

I'm so excited to see #s 4 and 9, because I had not thought about wearing them into fall. Your color is much better for that than mine (which feels more summery) but I love the styling with booties.

Ooh, Vivian, thank you for chiming in! It's good to know they wash well and thanks for the tip about ironing. It's reassuring to know that someone else owns these, lol.

Kelley, I'd say they are TTS. I don't know how much they will stretch though. Maybe Vivian will chime in. Maybe they run just a teeny bit big. I usually wear a 30 and these are 30P, which usually is a little smaller overall (but not a whole size or anything). I'd guess you need petite too. Regular was a couple of inches longer and the rise was also too high for me- it felt slightly bigger in the waist than petite but it was hard to tell if that wasn't just a consequence of the longer rise.

I think they do run a little big, plus the fabric seems to have a little stretch in it. I went one size down and they have been terrific. On me they don't really stretch out with wear; the fabrication allows them to retain their shape quite well. But they don't stay quite as crisp looking which is to be expected I guess. Definitely among my most comfortable pants though and a great way to do wide cropped.
