Eliza J dress/eta new size - YouLookFab Forum

The size 4 Eliza J dress came today. I think it fits, with plenty of ease, but I prefer the length of the sleeves and hem length of the size 6. Also, this dress is very damaged. The sleeves are stretched out badly and many stitches are ripped. There's also a bad snag in the back by the zipper. So it has to go back. The belly seems to bell out a bit even on this size. I'm unsure if that is just how this dress fits in any size, or if it's just stretched out. Anyway, I'm sorely disappointed. I'm unsure whether to keep the size 6 and try to get it altered, or not.

Hi Fab Ones, what do you think of the fit and style of this dress?

(Please ignore the ancient wedges and weedy yard, which I intended to get to this week, but the kids got hand foot and mouth disease. Yay.)

Pros, so far:
-2 linings! I really don't need a slip
-Good length, doesn't come up too high when I sit
-I think this would work well as a wedding guest dress, but I could wear it to church as well
-fabric feels nice, not scratchy
-sleeves! I don't love wearing sleeveless dresses without a cardigan, don't know why
-I have lots of ease in this dress, I think size 6 works well, but is this too much ease for the style?

Doesn't sound like there are any cons! Seems very versitle for your needs. It would be interesting to see a size down to see a bit more fit through the waist but then you might loose the ease you feel elsewhere.

It is stunning on you. What a great dress to have in your closet. I'm not sure if a size down might be better. Is it still available in that size? If so , I might try it to compare. You want the perfect version of this perfect dress for you.

So sorry to hear about your kids. Parenting is not for the fainthearted.

I appreciate your input, ladies, thank you. I will keep watching for the size 4 to try, seems to be out of stock still.

If I can't find that next size down, does anyone think this would be a good candidate for tailoring? I have so far never had any thing tailored before. I like how the bust and sleeves fit but this dress does feel just a bit roomy through the waist and hips. I also would not want it any shorter which might be an issue with a smaller size.

I agree that it looks stunning on you! I was so busy admiring you in this dress that I truly didn't notice any weeds. Hopefully some of our talented seamstresses will weigh in on the tailoring question. I can tell you that I tried an NAS coat last week, The sleeves were just a bit short, and the SA told me the alteration to lengthen the sleeves would be complementary during NAS.

I'm not sure how alterations would go as far as not being a cardholder- perhaps just a flat fee. I have had excellent alterations done at Nordstrom and I think something like bringing in the waist would be easy for them. It may be worth your time to go in and have the seamstress look--and the very best ones will tell you if it's something you shouldn't do!

Thanks, Muffin. I think I may do that. I'm sure we have tailors nearby but I wouldn't have any idea how good they are. If I keep the dress, going to Nordstrom's to get it altered seems the safest idea.

Oh, this is reminding me of a very similar dress I had a few years ago! I consigned it and regret doing so.

It was a 6 also, and I think in that case a 4 would have been better -- but I wore the 6 for a number of years, and I wore it everywhere. It was so versatile and was the go-to dress for all sorts of events. It had a lot of ease, like yours, but it worked well with the ease. (So, even if tailoring is not an option I think this size will do.) But I always thought a 4 would have been even better, and that might be the case here too. (So, look into tailoring / keep an eye out for a 4.)

I would definitely not let this dress go, though!

I like the fit. If you can, get the smaller size just to see which you like better. But I probably wouldn't alter this one. We so used to seeing women wearing skin tight clothes that it's very refreshing to see someone wearing something with some ease in it. Plus I bet it's more comfortable.

Thank you, Viva, for telling me about your experience. I'm confirmed in my idea of keeping it for now and looking into tailoring, if I can't find the other size. It has three layers, so I'm not sure how difficult that would be to alter, but it altering it to fit my waist and hips would take it from being a good dress to a great one, maybe.

If you like the extra ease in the upper body, and really, there's not much, it looks great, I don't think taking some in on the sides would be so difficult or expensive.
The fit points of the dress, waistline, underarms etc., look good to me too and they might be higher in the 4 so I'd try to adjust the 6.
It's a very pretty dress and it looks great on you, I would love to have something that dressy ready in my closet and I wouldn't give up on it easily if I did!

Thanks Isabel, I like the idea of having a dressy dress ready to go; I have a large family and am looking forward to lots more weddings. I need a new dress in the mix, especially since several favorites are too big now and look bad.

This dress came back into stock in the next size down so I quickly ordered it to try.
