Knotted shirts...yay or nay?

During our little gathering, Medusa and Shana were poking fun at a mannequin in Zara that was wearing a knotted shirt, because it was just sooooo 80's. Well, I mentioned that I so happen to wear shirts like this lately, and I *love* the look, so there :p

Besides giving me a waist, it also effectively shortens my tops to work with skirts. I also see it as being more of a 50's thing than an 80's thing, but I suppose it depends how it is being worn.

Anyway, I said I'd post a pic next time I wore the look, so here it is:

It's dark outside and I'm a bit disheveled after taking off my coat, but you get the drift.

I think it's adorable! I think of it as a 50's/pinup thing too rather than an 80s thing.

I used to have a vintage red and white gingham shirt that I wore tied like that with nothing underneath (well, I wore a bra and all, I just meant not another shirt underneath) and I loved it. Back when I had a flat belly...sadly those days are long gone!

A big YAY for me. I also like to do this when I wear skirts but I have done this with walking shorts as well. This is a big spring and summer time look for me. I like to use a clear elastic band to hold it together for less bulk. On occassions when I have to wear those corporate logo tees, I like to cut the crewneck neckline band off to make it less stuffy and gather the hem and do a side knot (with my elastic band).
I also think that look is more 50's than 80's. Anyways, here are some of my examples:

Yay AJ, we are knotted shirt twins. I love how you have the last one knotted! That is very 90's to me. I used to get super long baggy shirts and knot them on the side, or pull them through a shirt cliip. Wonder if those will be making a comeback! I still have my neon green one...

and we used to take our t-shirt type tops and pull the bottom up and back down through the cleavage area as an alternative to the knots..... try that one ;-0

Ah, now I remember shirt clips! Was that 80's or 90's?
Neons...I remember wanting a pink or green neon sweater so badly when I was in high school but I couldn't afford it, so I got neon socks instead. : ) I think I still have those socks somewhere....

It has to be 90's. I was too young for it to be 80's!

I remember that Kim, but it was mostly the guys who did it when I was maybe 10. Weird huh? I still remember one of my girl friends scoffing and saying "ugh, boys are SO immature" when she saw them all running around the baskeball court wearing those knotted manbras :p

My mom did the shirtail tie in the 60's, and the T shirt clips whenever they were in style. I have never done either and I think it is because I am tall and don't need to pull these tops up shorter? I guess that is why you do this. Or is it like wearing a belt to accentuate the waist only you're wearing a knot? It does accentuate the waist.

Funny, I dressed mannequines today( they like my visual input)...I used this technique on 3 of them!! great for layering and very sweet on you too:)

I know Angie did it, but she is Angie and she can do whatever she wants and look spectacular. The rest of us mortals have some limitations!

I don't really NEED to tie my shirt in this case (I'm wearing it over a dress rather than a skirt). It's just something different and fun. It does accentuate the waist, which is precisely what I need (and no belt necessary, hooray).

[Am I really sad in admitting that the knotted shirt look kinda reminds me of Sandy from the movie Grease (altogether now....) "Tell, me more, tell me more, like, does he have a car?" (Yes, I know I'm different, I've been told that many times over the years!)]

I vote 'yay'. I never really paid attention to it, but now I see it in some of your photos, and I like it.

I'm old enough to have had one of those shirt clip things, but I never did. Man, I never had the 'cool' stuff! >: P

yes AJ, I was in Texas from 87-91... and I do believe Texas is the only state in the nation where it was fashionable to sport your states shape in jewelry or on clothing

I totally remember the pulling the t-shirt through the cleavage area! And the knotting at the front or the side.

I'm all for knotting buttondowns at the front. Great proportions on you, Maya. I'll be trying that look too, I think.
