Kind of Urgent - Should I change to drop off resume?

I was just at the shopping centre and noticed our only shoe shop had a sign advertising for a casual sales assistant.

One of my girls friends mum's works there, so I popped in to ask her about the hours etc. 12hrs per week - perfect for me! I met the manager and told her I would go back with my resume today.

But I'm wondering... should I change to take my resume back, or seeing as she has already seen me in what I'm wearing will it be ok? I don't want to seem OTT and go back in a full interview type outfit, and the staff there do just wear shorts with their company blouses... Should I just change my shoes to a pair that I have bought from there (I have plenty seeing as its our only real shoe store LOL) I could put on low black wedges or even kitten heels...

(Yes I'm bubbling with excitement and nervousness - this would be the ideal job for me for this year, and I have a contact in the store, but OMG I haven't done this is in sooo long!)

Yes, you might get an on the spot interview.

I would change to a smart casual look. A top with a sleeve (short sleeve is fine) but I'm thinking a shirt, long pants, and a nice heel. Casual but a step up from your current outfit. (which is lovely by the way)

YES.

While she's already seen you in what you had on, this is your opportunity to show her how pulled-together you can be. On the off-chance that her first impression of your appearance was less than stellar, this will change her mind.

Informal, understated, but polished.

OK now I'm stressing LOL

I'll have to have a look and see what I can come up with... I don't own ANY long pants at all and my wardrobe is predominately formal, or casual... I'm definitely missing that middle ground - because until now its never been warranted in my wardrobe.

Perhaps my new floral skirt with heels and I'll see what top I can find to match...

Our town is just so uber casual and even as casual as I was this morning, I was dressed up for here, so I'm struggling with the notion of in-between formal and casual LOL

Well, here I was going to say that you should change to long pants and a top with sleeves (short sleeves are fine since I assume it's hot there), but a skirt that's not too dressy would work as well. I wouldn't necessarily go with a dress myself since your town sounds really casual and you want to give the impression that you're not high-maintenance.

OK now I'm SUPER confused LOL

I just rang a friend of mine who has a small business here (so totally understands the local area), and she said that she would actually laugh if someone changed to simply drop in a resume on the same day.

It's so hard to know the best thing to do seeing as the level of casual here is ridiculously overwhelming, but, its still a job hunt.

Oh and because I'll have the girls with me, I'm seriously doubting they would get too worked up on an interview on the spot. The other staff/manager there are all mums so know its school hols.

I am going back in an hour so I'm going to do something else and forget about it for 20 mins LOL

Theresa, I'm late to the party but what did you decide and how did it go? I think I understand your dilemma given the casualness (I think I just made up that word) of your town. You look lovely as is and as you say you were already dressed up by your towns standards. Good luck, sounds perfect!

Theresa, if it's not too late, based on what you said I would stick with what you have on and maybe just change into a pair of shoes they carry, as you mentioned in your first post. Good luck!

How'd you go Theresa? I really liked your first outfit. I'd have swapped out the denim shorts for either black shorts or a black pencil skirt and reckon that would be perfect!

OK, well after a bit of a break and a chat to my neighbour, I ended up wearing roughly the same outfit - I just swapped my shoes and bag for more grown up versions and fixed my hair and make up...

and... the manager wasn't even there then so I just gave my resume to the lady I know who works there LOL

But the lady I know said she would definitely put in a good word for me.

So feel free to give me a smack across the knuckles for wasting your time with "urgent" pleas for help and then ignoring your advice!

I shall definitely keep you posted though and if I get an interview I promise to take your advice

In the end, you know the town and the atmosphere far better than we do, and going with your neighbor's advice, as well as your gut instinct, was the right decision. Hope all goes well!
