These two tops were given (handed down) to me In January, and I have worn both of them once but am still unsure about them and would love to hear your thoughts.
They are both a size or 2 bigger than I'd usually wear, and that makes the black top, which has a back tie (outdated feature?) a little too long in the waist - a novel experience for me!!
What appears to be 2 white lines across the first top is a photo issue only.

I like the first one, Anne. Great colour on you, and the silhouette is versatile. I can see it work with skinny jeans/pants, bootcuts, flares etc. too. But in the end it comes down to whether or not you will start wearing it more. Is there any particular reason why you are not reaching for it?
The second top looks a bit dated to me, I vote pass on.

Inge, though I have been a little unsure about the top as it is much more voluminous than my usual style, the main reason that I haven't worn it much is that it is too hot - it has an inner synthetic lining and that is just too much when the temperature are over 30 C most days (plus it is silk, so sort of a special fabric that I'd be careful about where to wear) But your suggestions could work really well for a casual friday outfit. Thanks!
I agree about the datedness of the second top - I did have 2 people today tell me while wearing it that I was much too young to have a daughter DD's age (11) which was gratifying - but that perhaps isn't enough reason to keep it!
The neckline is a bit higher than I'd prefer for a black top too, and as Rute said - too long

I think #1 is worth playing around with. I think it definitely has potential! I'd pass on #2.

1 could be interesting if you have weather that lets you wear a short sleeve, lined top. It's a good colour on you, too. 2 isn't quite right, as the others have said.

Even if it's your size, I think the second one would look better if it was bigger, so pass.
The first one looks pretty good and I like the color on you but the way you've styled it makes me think it would be a lot of effort and possibly expense to figure out how to wear it, and I'm not sure it's really your style. The other downside is it seems to me I just recently discovered you have a really lovely hip to waist ratio and it might be a shame to conceal it?
So pass and pass.

I like them both, but they both look a little big. I think it would be easy to shorten the second one. The first - the colour is outstanding on you, even though it's pretty blousy.

It's interesting that #2 has the kind of peplum shape you were trying on last week (the green top). It's longer and I agree the back-ties are dated, but they do emphasize your shape. Maybe shorten, or try it with a topper before you discard? #1 is pretty and I agree with Inge that it would suit skinny jeans. The uncomfortable synthetic lining is a big problem though ... unless you could cut it out and wear a camisole. But that's veering way into the "too many work-arounds to make them stellar" territory, as Sheila says. Just a few thoughts based on how these two tops look on you from afar ...

Honestly, I am not a fan of #1. I like #2 a bit better, but I still feel like it is a touch dated (I like my tops longer, though, as I have a long torso).

If it were me, I would probably donate them both.

Hi everyone,

I see lots of comments here - almost unanimous on Number 2 being a "donate" (though differences about whether it is too big or 2 small!) Gauche I know what you mean about the similarities with a peplum shape but I think that is only because of the difficulties of taking pictures of black clothes - it doesn't really look peplumy.

Opinions of number 2 seem varied! Isobel, thanks for the compliment - I am certainly not planning to go to an expense over this.
Thistle - it really isn't my style, so I can relate you your not liking it either. But I am trying to keep an open mind.

Gauche - any camisole would be a problem in the Australian summer! It is so hot I often can't bear to wear even short sleeves, and anything with 2 layers is too much. But the top would be fine in AC.

Deborah - I hear you. I don't know any however. I had 2 pairs of palazzo pants in the 90's and loved them, until I tripped over their hems - I haven't gone back to them!

The second is too long for skirts, BUT may work with pants, better-as they will cover more of the long rise we've been both complaining about in the last times:-).
