Jacket ponderings - YouLookFab Forum

Angie recommended that I get a fitted short jacket as part of my work capsule.
I have tried on every one available in the shops I go to for work clothes (Jacqui E, Portmans and target - also checked out Zara and Cue - though the latter is too expensive)
Angie indicated that a jacket the length of my suit jacket (pic 2)would be ok, but I am beginning to thing that getting one in black when I already have one in charcoal is not the most efficient idea.
Also - NOTHING fits. I'd I did buy something, it would need to have alterations all over the place.

I'd also like to get a pleather jacket this winter. This is a workhorse item for me - I know I will wear it a lot (I am replacing one that has deteriorated). I suspect it is too casual for work apart from Fridays.
This one look good in the mirror, though a bit boxy in the picture. But the tag has a warning that the fabric may leave colour on other clothing or upholstery. Not very encouraging!!!

Any thoughts?

The pleather moto jacket you are wearing looks great on you, not boxy at all to my eye. Hmming about the dye transfer. Could you take a barely damp paper towel and rub it and see if anything comes off? I've read that warning on jeans and had no ill effects, but best to test probably.

In terms of your suit jacket could you order some online (I don't know if free shipping and returns are widely available) and try on at home?

I hadn't heard of that trick rabbit!! I'll give it a go!

Free shipping and returns are not the norm in Australia (except sometimes for shoes) so I'd need to be pretty certain.

I'd love to hear suggestions for other places to look. My main problem is being so long waisted - if a jacket is long enough it'll be too big

I guess boxy is the wrong word - I think I meant rectangular. But since I am a rectangle on the top half I suppose that is to be expected!

I like the pleather jacket but I would definitely try rabbit's tip, as leaving stains on my friends furniture would probably not get me an invite back

I don't know how tall you are, but I'm a rectangle shape too. I'm rectangular and tall (5'8") but I don't take a tall size in tops. J.Crew makes blazers that fit me well, as does Banana Republic. BCBG blazers are more expensive but perfectly fitting for me. The fit of blazers over at Target and Zara are a hit or miss for me, usually a miss, with the most common problem being that the front buttons sit up too high.

Alterations on a blazer can get expensive, so I'd avoid that if possible. Good luck!

Anne, keep trying Zara. I find their jackets usually fit great right off the rack. I am not long waisted (actually a bit short-waisted) but like you, I am long in the rise. So it means my torso is a bit longer than is typical for someone my height.

I like this pleather jacket on you. Can you layer under it if need be?

Have you tried on your charcoal suit jacket with the skirts you would want to wear it with (or pants)? If it works, then you can stop that search. If not, then can you pinpoint why? Angie was probably suggesting a black jacket so that you would have a simple third piece that would mix and match and tie your various items together in a cohesive manner. If this charcoal jacket fits the bill, then you can focus your $$ elsewhere.

Karie I'm only 5"4. However I'm in Australia so can't try US brands without expensive shipping I don't think.
Suz - I have tried on at least one suit jacket/ other skirt combination and I think it looked OK. Tempting to stop shopping for this item!
I'll have a closer look at Zara.

Have you tried asking at your favorite haunts on what day they set out new items? You may have to return every two or three weeks to check out new merchandise.

Hi again Anne. I think if you are going to invest in a black jacket maybe you should get a different style from the grey jacket. Maybe a black moto jacket in a work appropriate fabric? Maybe you could get one that works for both the office and casual wear (although the pleather will look more cool for casual wear). Have you considered going to a DFO or another outlet type place - you can often get Cue, Veronika Maine, David Lawrence and other work-type brands at good discounts. And have you checked out ASOS? I am a big fan (especially of their sales). Delivery is free and courier pick up returns are pretty reasonable ($6 I think). I signed up to their "VIP" service and you get free express delivery and free courier pick up returns. Best investment. EVER. Not sure my husband would agree (lots of packages going to and fro...)

Thank everyone so much for the input. (Brooklyn I have started looking at the Asos site, and I do have an outlet place close to where I work) I am going off social media for the Easter weekend but will join you again on Tuesday.
