Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Is this AT dress too short?

Hi Ladies, I have been lurking for a while, and amazed by your style and kindness, all of you! This is the first time I post. Hope you don't mind I ask a question right away. I just bought this AT dress. Is it too short? I'm 41 by the way. If it's too short, will it work if I go to a tailor and let the hem out 1/2 inch? Thank you so much!

Ohhhhhh, I don't think so! I love that dress on you. You have great legs. Would look good with some sheer tights.

Hi JoDee and welcome.

The link didn't work when I tried it! Can you check it for us?

Dress length is an interesting question. I think as a general rule, the most flattering length is right at the knee or just slightly above or below. I have found this to definitely be true for me. But there are certainly exceptions. You do have nice legs, as Shannon pointed out so could have more flexibility in lengh. Additionally, the scrunchy boot trend has encouraged a slight rising of the hem to look right. Have you considered trying the dress with a scrunchy boot? Also, I have added leggings to dresses of this length to make them work better for me.

How does the dress length work when you sit down? It looks ok as shown but would be even better a tad longer and/or with tights or leggings. It's a wonderful dress with great print and style on you.

nope! that dress looks great on you!

Welcome! (I'm new here, too)
I remember that dress--it looks very nice on you. You definitely have the legs to wear a shorter length. If you feel comfortable with it, go for it! The dress looks lovely as you've style it; you can get more milage out of it by dressing it down with tights and boots as others have suggested.

I think that style dress is most flattering at about the knee because of its classic shape. However if styled in a different way the length might work as is. I do not think 1/2 inch will make much difference. Slouchy boots does help with the shorter lengths.

We have sold tons of these dresses...the hemline is a little shorter...but at 41 you can wear this and look super !! It also looks great with the yellow cardi:)

I would leave the hem as is, if you are happy...you look great:)

Looks great to me. Not too short, and I don't think that a half inch would make any difference, anyway.

Ooooo - love this dress. I'd keep it the length it is right now. Do you have seam allowance to let out the hem in the future if hemlines dip down? A leopard shift is timeless! BTW, welcome!

Welcome, Jo Dee! I'm so glad you plucked up the courage to post.

The frock looks lovely. It's best to do the sit down test first though - and make sure you cross your legs too. If you feel comfortable like that, you have yourself a fabulous dress!

I think you look fantastic in this dress! Looks great! But if it is too short when you sit then I guess you could benefit from the extra 1/2 inch. Otherwise, looks great!

Thank you all so much!

I did the sit down and cross legs test as Angie and others suggested. As much as I love this dress, I have to say that it's a little bit too short even with tights and boots. I do plan to wear it to work (with tights, boots and cardis). Otherwise I won't get much use out of it at all.

But I really really want to make it work so I'm thinking of taking it to a tailor. I measured and it can add 1-1.5 inches to the length. I don't know why I said 1/2 inch before, sorry. Have any of you done dress alternation like this before- let out the hem? Will it ruin the dress or it's a perfect normal thing to do?

Thanks and Happy Halloween!!

I do this alteration to pants and it works! Go for it.

I'm glad you are going to take the dress to a tailor to have the hem let out. You look fabulous! I know the dress well, I have been eyeing it for a while. It's a great piece, I think you will get a lot of use out it.

Jo Dee - that alteration usually works. To get the maximum length, you can see if they will add a different strip of fabric (in similar texture as the dress) under the hem to use to hem in the line - that way you can let out the entire folded up length. Good luck. It looks gorgeous on you.
