When I first started participating, I also thought that there was a "style" here, though I couldn't really figure out what it was. Now I realize that everyone dresses well and that even though we do shop in many of the same places, and our choices for individual pieces seem to be similar, everyone styles those pieces very differently.

Wow, such thoughtful and considered replies! I love the sensitivity and astuteness which all the commenters have brought to this discussion, and which make reading YLF comments so rewarding. The combined effect of all these views broadens my understanding in ways which I couldn’t have achieved on my own.
It intrigues me to think that a living, breathing community of people -- strong, interacting and sharing ideas -- creates a third something which didn’t exist before, and continues to exist only with the input of its members: a culture. Angie, thanks to your very democratic approach to “managing” the YLF community, this culture is thriving, with a definite life of its own, and with its own unique and positive qualities which continue to impress new readers. I think the flowering of a culture is something really exciting, Angie, and I hope that you feel justly proud of this aspect of your YLF creation!

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is how YLF members help each other once we know each other's styles. Look at what a help Inge was to me with posting pastel-colored tops the other day, and Jean for guiding me on shifting my color palette with a new hair color. There are loads of remarkably talented and generous women on this forum who participate in evolving each other's style. For this reason alone, I'd say that it's impossible to pin down one YLF style. Now, on the question of YLF appealing to a certain demographic, I completely agree with everyone's assessment. YLF has a strong brand and strong identity and we recognize that. It's a good thing. Otherwise we'd all be confused about why we should be hanging out here!

Nicely said, Laura!

Lyrebirdgully, there is definitely a YLF culture, which I view as a positive - just like you do

Maya, I am not offended at all. You wouldn't be our oldest YLF member, and a very loyal one, if you didn't think YLF offered you and your style *something*.

If 'attainable' is the YLF style then I'm in--and that's why I'm here.

There is a broad spectrum of attainable fashion to be found here on real 'in the trenches' women.
