Is it ever okay to wear a denim jumper?

Denim jumpers are kind of a joke or a Halloween costume idea among my social circle, but I secretly want one for working around the house. I have a big belly and a small bladder so jeans are too tight and overalls are too time consuming and annoying for potty breaks.

I was just curious if the joke is as well known among the culture at large as I think it is.

If you saw a neighbour checking their mail or working in their back yard in a denim jumper would you laugh or immediately jump to derogatory and stereotypical conclusions about them?

Denim jumpers are more than OK in mine.

I say life is too short, wear the jumper if you want to. Throw caution to the wind.

Heh, heh, heh. I've had this Topshop one on my Wish List for awhile, but I have worries about the color, and more importantly about the style. Since I'm worried that the style is too juvenile, it may mean that it IS too juvenile. Since I'm short, at least the length should be okay.

Having said that, I don't think I've seen a grown woman wearing one since the 1980s!

My answer would have been the same as Aziraphale's. I think of them as being for children, but if you want to wear one, why not?

How do you feel about the denim jumper?..Does it make your heart sing?...Are you in tune with your own style when you wear it?...More than what others say, I am concerned about what you say...There are a lot of alternatives to work around the house that might make you smile...

Crutcher, i wouldn't exactly say it makes my heart sing, but what I'm supposed to wear makes my heart sob and pay exorbitant shipping charges to avoid having to leave the house.

I'd love to hear your suggestions for comfortable, practical, and socially acceptable and I'm an adult and know how to say, "not really my style, but thank you for your time" instead of "I wouldn't be caught dead in that ugly thing!"

I am aware of the negative stereotype and would have been the first one to say "no." But I do agree with other posters, wear what is comfortable for you.

I don't understand: what are you supposed to wear that makes you so unhappy? Why can't you wear whatever you want to at home?

Basically what you're talking about here is presentable lounge wear. I think a denim jumper is a great solution.

Ah. My peeps are preppy. You see - or once saw - quite a lot of those denim jumpers (like the one in your link). Esp. with the French sailor shirt (the striped top with 3/4 length sleeves). But I've rubbed elbows with the Ruby Ridge crowd, who also wear them... but they usually do a discreet floral top, puff sleeves, and a matching denim kerchief to cover the hair. Now I live in Hipsterville, and you see them worn ironically every now and then, with Doc Marten boots (DMs) or Converse sneakers (Chucks); sometimes a kerchief is thrown in for good measure (but not a matching one). There's some mocking maybe between these sets, but they're all wearing them! Lol.

What about a chambray (can be almost denim depending on brand) shirttail hem dress, with sporty sneaks? If I understand you, the point is to wear a skirt or dress that is durable, washable, not precious.
Or, it may be that what you're aiming for is an A-line shape, and there should be lots of casual dresses made that way. So the trick would be to find colors, bodice styles and fabrics that fit your shape and style.

I have several comfortable summer dresses (most from Soma) that are like wearing a nightie, they are so comfortable. Wearing them at home, they fill the same gap as a "duster" which my grandmother might have worn around her house, about 1962. They are cute enough to leave home in, especially with a short jean jacket or a cardigan.

I just bought one and nobody here is going to laugh at me, but they will be shocked to see me in a dress! I wore one once here to a funeral. I plan to wear this for summer stay at home evenings in July and August.

BTW, I've bought 4 garments now from this Etsy seller, including 2 of my core denim jackets. One of them she custom dyed for me. Been meaning to get a photo of myself in the new dress, but it's still too cold here to put it on.

Wear what you love! No on gets to be the boss of you unless you let them! If you love it, wear it.

Otherwise, you could always pick a lovely maxi skirt or dress. You have to be comfortable in what you wear

The link you posted doesn't seem to work anymore. The associations with homeschooling Christianity must be a regional thing because I don't see it in the Northeast. I might think of long and voluminous ones as being food co-op, Waldorf mom-ish. I believe someone mentioned this association recently in conjunction with button front denim skirts as well.

I bought my stylish 15 year old a denim jumper, and she kept it but thought perhaps it was a little too fashion forward for her!

there are so many versions of the denim jumpsuit out there--I think it's all about context. Do you live on a farm? Then it's okay to wear a stiff denim jumpsuit and Red Wing boots to the mailbox. Live in the burbs by the beach? Then try a sleeveless chambray jumpsuit with sandals.

Thanks--I appreciate the links to the store picture, alaskagirl, and will definitely be sticking around and posting some yay or nay pictures.

I wound up spending way too much money for something I'm not sure if I'm even going to be able to wear out of my house or want to wear for dirty chores, but it makes my heart sing.

It's not handmade, but it is similar to what I would make if I had the time (and i've been waiting to find the time for 38 years now, lol): it's the top of a pair of bib overalls with a lightweight print skirt. I would have to wear it as a jumper instead of a stand alone dress because my face looks even older than I am even though my upper arms don't look any different than they did when i was 30.

Or maybe not. I live in a house full of men. The oxymoronic "adult child" may not even know about all "the rules" I'm breaking and I'm sure the first grader and the tomcat neither know nor care.

I'm having trouble with translations here! Jumper in England is a sweater, so I couldn't see a problem, we'd say pinafore or bib'n braces for the dress you pictured. I would have said it was a younger thing really but then it's how you wear something that does the trick.....if you FEEL great in an outfit I find you tend to LOOK great in it. You carry it off with the right feeling. Go with your instincts. Maybe team it with something a little edgy or different to make it YOUR look.

That's really cute! Seems to me you could wear this anywhere. But it's definitely a jumper/pinafore and not a dress. Needs a top under it. Personally I'd wear a tee. Maybe take one of those men's castoffs and rip off the sleeves to make a muscle tee (I have a fondness for punk).

T shirts I've got--I think this jumper might even resurrect some that were headed to the dump by covering up outdated and dangerous political slogans that could get you killed or your kid taken away in this bad science fiction movie called 2015 where I'm stranded with no hope of escape.

Another thing that was holding me back from the jumper was thinking that I'd need spend yet more money for something (I was thinking I might have to buy yet another stupid alligator shirt) to wear under it, but if I'm going incongruous/anachronism anyway, I might as well go all the way.

Especially if I have permission from so many cool, trendy, intelligent young kids. <3 <3 <3

I want to keep my peoplehateme.com T shirt. People Hate Me was a Facebook app that let you know who unfollowed you back in '11 and of course Zuckerman shut it down ages ago because it violated the TOS and I'm aware that Facebook did not improve after I stopped using it, but I like the shirt because it's a shirt.

I'm new and can't post pictures yet, but in another day or two you're going to have to help me sort through my closet and blow the dust off my sewing machine. The broken appliances have to go to the dump today but the clothes and fabric can wait.
