Impromptu vacation - clothing & shoes quandry

So the husband and I decided we absolutely must go somewhere this coming weekend. Savannah is one of his favorite places and I have never been, and since it is a manageable 5.5 hr drive, thats where we're headed. The weather forecast for the weekend reads mostly sunny in the 80s (& humid per the travel forums) with 30% chance for rain. And, I have been told Old Savannah is best explored on foot.

This is my first vacation post YLF and I am determined to not wear my vacation uniform of bad capris and sneakers when walking is in the plans. I know, blasphemy! But I was always thinking of the comfort factor.

So I rushed out to the nearest store yesterday at lunch, Target, and found this dress:

What do you think? It is absolutely comfortable and it is the right length (just below knee). And I love the pockets. What do you think? I think it looks so much better on Kendra and I wish I had cute red shoes just like hers.

Are there any other dress options you think I should look into? I've been lazy shopping for a summer wardrobe, because it always summer here:-) I will head out to the mall tonight.

I sized up per everyone's recommendation and it is currently away getting the waist taken in.

I don't know what I'm going to do for tops. I haven't had the time to rummage through my closet since we made plans yesterday, had to go to a friend's place for dinner.

My biggest concern, though, are shoes. I've been wanting the Me Too Ninis since I spotted them at DSW. But they were out in my size in bronze, which is what I want. They do have a bunch of other Me Too flats there. I don't mind paying full price for a pair of shoes that I know I will get a lot of wear out of. And they don't have to be the Me Toos. I scoured the websites of all stores I could go and pick up something and cannot find the Brulees anywhere. What would you suggest that will make good 8 hr walking shoes in hot and muggy conditions? It tends to get that way here in Tampa too, so it will not be a vacation only purchase.

Endless.com is another option since they have overnight delivery. We leave Saturday morning and return Monday evening. So I'm thinking I will need atleast 3-4 outfits. Since this is a road trip, packing light is not a concern.

I want to be comfortable foremost but also look as good as I can while I'm at it!

Oh, and I meant to add I wish I had white walk shorts or clamdiggers. I'm goign to go back and read through the old threads, but any suggestions off the cuff where I can go try on some?

Have you looked at New York and Compnay for white walk shorts and summer tops? They always have basics and coupons/deals.

I can't help with ordering shoes on net as I always buy in stores but I love all the MeToo's I have. I also have a very comfy pair of ballet style Converse that are my 10 hr walking shoes.

Love your new dress - great color on you and looks terrific. You will get tons of wears out of that one before summer ends.

Walk shorts - will they be back from alterations?
I'm going to have to follow others opinions on your denim clams as I am not versed in correct PPL for those.

Hey Niva,

I love Savannah - I was there several times when I lived in the South. Definitely hit the Gryphon tea room for high tea if you get a chance - it is awesome! You see all types in Savannah - everything from jean shorts & skimpy tank tops to a few genteel southern ladies dressed to impress.

I think the dress looks amazing on you and would be perfect for Savannah. Those capris might be the bad kind - maybe others would have better input for you on those. Hopefully you will get your walk shorts back. Do you have some summer skirts you could wear? Jeans might be a bit heavy for daytime but would probably work for dinner in the evening. Do you have some good bottoms for your Indian tunics?

Savannah is definitely walkable (and much more enjoyable this way) but honestly, do you want to break in a brand new pair of shoes on a walking trip like this? I don't know about you but I find that there is always a breaking in period in even the most comfy shoes. And I definitely do not have very fussy feet but inevitably there might some spots that are rubbed a little raw or blisters the first time I am wearing a pair of shoes and walking around alot. Just something to think about...

I love the dress on you both!

For shoes, do you live near a Nordstrom's? I was in there last week and they had several styles of Me-Too's on the floor, although I don't think they had the Nini's. If you like the Nini's (I do too) then you will probably like the Lacie's as well.

Also Nordie's is selling them at a discount - I think $56 or something like that? I noticed that the other day. Good deal!

Chris, That is a great idea! Thanks! I've been so busy at work and trying to put this getaway together I can't think straight Ballet style converse sounds like awesome. I will see if I can find them at the mall today. I talked with the tailor today and asked if I could pick them up tomorrow and she asked me to call and check tomorrow, so don't know yet.

shana, Gryphon tea room is now on my "Things to do in Savannah" list. Thank you much I have been pretty wary that the capris are not PPL since YLF. I bought them 2 yrs ago and they've been broken in and so comfortable now. But if they gotta go, they gotta go. Remember the problem with the Indian tunic on the leggings? With my wide hips, I have the same problem with the height and length of the side vents on most of the tunics I have - on leggings and clams. I'll still try on a few more tonight and see how they look. You make a very valid point about breaking in new shoes shana. That thought never crossed my mind, so thank you! But my feet aren't too fussy, so I'm hoping that will not be an issue. I'll keep an eye out for some open toed l flats/sandals.

shiny, Thanks much for the headsup! Guess where I'm headed to right after work? I'm so bummed about the Ninis, I checked the only other location of DSW and they didn't even have the bronze Ninis. I'll check out the other models at Nordies.

Believe it or not, this is the first vacation since our wedding 2 years ago, that the husband and I are not just making the most of a business trip or with family. I'm excited!

Vani, well, I don't have wide hips and I seem to have the same problem with those tunics - I think they just hit at an awkward spot. I also wanted to mention AT & AT loft are both having some killer sales for Memorial day (so is Gap and BR). I just saw the email from Loft and they have a bunch of stuff market down to $25 - tops, capris,dresses walk shorts (including white ones):

shana, thanks for the headsup. I did manage to make it to the mall despite the stormy weather here but had just enough time to scour all the stores for shoes, in vain. I did manage to snag a pair of shorts from Gap (on sale for $25):

I wish I had enough time to take pictures of me with some outfit ideas. I really like the fit and though the length is a tad shorter than I am used to (an inch above the knee, I feel conscious because of my huge thighs) but hubby assured me it looked great.

The dress looks very good on you,Vani.The shorts from Gap are also good.I second Shana's thoughts on trying a new pair for shoes on a vacation.I visited Hilton Head last week and the weather was lovely.The beaches are very beautiful.It does get warm during the day.Most people there were dressed in flowing dresses,skirts and shorts.

Hey ladies! Thanks so much for all your input, even though I did not have the time to reply.

I have to start off with what an absolutely bewitchingly beautiful town the Historic District in Savannah is. Utterly and timelessly romantic. Everyone must go should they get the chance.

Angie, guess what I brought back from Nordies on Friday? Bronze Nadias! It was like a sign, the only Me Toos in my size there were the Nadias and another pair of loafers. The only colors available in my size were patent red, yellow and metallic bronze. I loved the yellow but they made my feet look washed out. Maybe something more of a golden yellow would have worked. They are the most comfortable non-sneaker shoes that I have ever worn! Apart from the synthetic insole requiring me to use my summersoles inserts, I have not experienced any issues whatsoever. Walked all around Savannah's historic district all day, went on ghost tours, climbed 178 steps up the Tybee Island lighthouse and drove several hours in them. And apart from minor chafing on one itsy bitsy spot under my left little toe, It didn't much to break them in either. I am super duper happy. My husband found it terribly funny how I kept talking about how comfortable and cute the shoes are.

I have a few pictures of me in the outfits I ended up wearing which I will post as soon as I can get them off the camera.

Shana, Gryphon tea room was closed when we headed over a little after lunch time. We ended up shopping at the SCAD store instead.

Ruchi, Fortunately for us, the entire time we were in Savannah, it was overcast and cool and threatening to pour, but it managed to stay dry during the day. It was perfect weather for strolling around and the night rain made everything look fresh and so beautiful. And I did see a LOT of very pretty dresses and SO many gladiator flats! I am thoroughly motivated to shop for more dresses and atleast one pair of gladiator flats

So I FINALLY got around to getting all the vacation pictures online and organized.

Here are my outfits for the 3 days we were there. The first outfit I had to recreate at home. Its actually a funny story why I don't have that picture. DH took the battery out of my little camera and put it away to be charged, and forgot to pop it back in the next morning. Since he didn't want to carry around his big DSLR on the walking tour, we left it at the hotel. Now, we're at this "haunted" house and the guide tells us something about people's cameras not working or pictures blacking out when trying to take pictures of the house. I pull mine out and try to turn on the camera and it won't work! For 2 minutes there we were totally convinced it wasn't all hooey after all. Of course then common sense returned and I realized it was the missing battery and not an angry spirit to blame. Anyways onwards to the picture:

I lopped off my head because my hair looked something awful. And, I couldn't find the necklace I wore that day. So it's kind of a partial recreation.

That yellow tote is the only thing I had large enough to accommodate sunscreen, water bottle, umbrella and all other sundries. Not too sure it looked very stylish.

That dress is amazing, dresses are always a good option to take on a trip because they don't use much space in a bag and you can always dress it down or up depending on the shoes and accessories.

Well, romantic or eerie depending on what mood you're in I suppose. When you're eating the most delicious rose cream ice cream, everything seems magical and romantic LOL
