I'm an apple, right?

I've been learning so much from Angie's posts and all of you fab ladies on the forum over the past month or so. I'm finally getting down to the work of thinking about what my personal style is, what style is aspire to, and what I need to start building my ideal wardrobe. I've read through Angie's super helpful posts on body type, but before I go crazy looking for certain shapes and silhouettes, I was hoping I could get confirmation that I am in fact an adorable apple. Photos are attached!

Thanks in advance, and if you have any personal suggestions for things that look good on my body type, please do share!

Welcome Sarah Kay!!

I find the body typing tricky indeed...you have a great shape. I hope that you find the answers here from someone more expert than me. There are lots of great knowledgeable members here.

I think you would suit lots of styles - you could definitely wear the new flared and bootleg jeans that are coming back, or draped soft trousers.

I don't think you're an apple. I see hourglass, secondary rectangle - i.e., not a sharp hourglass.

I was thinking inverted triangle or rectangle - sort of IT on the top half and rectangle through the midsection and bottom half...Although I don't understand the distinction between apple and rectangle, really, when it comes down to it. Nobody (or at least very few people, and not you) is actually shaped like an apple.

I can see the possibility of IT (inverted triangle), because the shoulders are a strong line. But it's not Linda Evans-strong IT.

You are built similar to me, but my shoulders visually are a bit broader (wider than my hips), and you have more chest than I do. Your arms are also thinner than mine, but our legs are similarly thin. I consider myself an IT with apple secondary. When I gain weight, I gain in my midsection and chest, but also in my arms and shoulders and back -- which maintains the IT proportions. So I am going to say yes, you are an adorable apple primary-- because your shoulders are more proportionate and your arms are thinner.

@laura, I may be wrong (and rusty on Angie's body types) but I tend to think rectangles don't have proportionately ample chests.

@Sarah, I hope you don't mind me talking about your chest, but you are full on the sides, towards your armpits... to me this reads "apple" -- apple isn't just about the waistline/midsection.

As an apple myself, one reason I don't think you are an apple is because you have a curve to your lower hips (looking at pic #2). Apples have "high hips" and a short waist, as well as a broad back (in relation to their other measurements), making the waist and midsection look wide. You also have a long neck -- apples usually don't.

I don't know exactly how to distinguish between the other types (rectangle, IT) and subtypes. Your legs are slender and you have a bust, which I don't think are characteristics of rectangles.

Trinny and Susannah's Body Shape Bible is an interesting read on this subject -- they identify lots more shapes than the traditional four.

I'm an apple and I think you are too. Your waistline like mine is slight, not much in the way of a butt, narrowish hips and the tendency toward a tummy. For a long time because of my heavy chest I thought I was an IT, until I heard the problems IT's have. The shoulders not fitting in my shirts and jackets have never been a problem.

You know you're an apple when:

skirts and pants curve in the hips and your hips can't fill that curve (but you're wearing the right size)
your pants are tight in the waistband and fit fine or loose everywhere else
You are prone to boob-tummy mash ups if you're not careful
Someone has said to you at least once "I didn't know you had a waist!"
You feel like your general shape is round or straight up and down
You've never had washboard abs no matter how hard you worked out

I hope this helps because I was confused for a long time about my shape. Also note that you can be a hybrid of 2 body types

I check all of those, except the boob-tummy mash up... but I also have another set of "you know you're an IT when" bullet points.... involving broad shoulders:

Spaghetti straps or strapless make you look like a guy dressed in drag
Your mother tells you that you are an envious mesomorph, but maybe not hit the gym so much, because you grow muscle so easily.. like a guy
Tops and toppers that fit your shoulders hang such that you have no waist or figure anywhere below, and may also be too long
Puffed sleeves or shoulder pads -- who needs them? You already look like you walked out of the 80s
Epaulettes... who invented these? What were they thinking????
To make yourself feel better, you remind yourself that most models are IT's.. because they are like hangers for the clothes. Oh, but you're not tall. Sad face.
Tunics and leggings/skinnies are your friend, when looking like an ice cream cone is in fashion.
Otherwise A-line skirts, flares, bottoms with lots of hip/pocket detail, heck even jodphurs and pleats are your friend.. to balance off the top half and give illusion of hips that you don't have.
You don't have hips, just bone. Low rise slides right off, because there's nothing to anchor them in place.

Welcome to the forum! You have a lovely slim figure. Whatever you name it, you have the kind of build that looks great in skinny jeans and tunics. You probably need open necklines (scoop, v necks) as you have a fuller bust.

Wow, thanks so much for all of the feedback! It's so interesting to hear what other people see. For sure, it sounds like I might have a mix of a couple of body types.

@shiny and @davies, those bullet points help a lot! I definitely check off way more of the apple ones than the IT. I actually kind of like featuring my shoulders, I think it provides some nice structure in contrast to my round chest.

My biggest challenge has always been dressing around my bust since it's so large in proportion to my frame. I do tend toward a tunic/skinnies shape, but sometimes I worry it makes me look bigger than I really am through the midsection just because of how tops drape off of the bustline. I'm learning how to add structure, though, so hopefully that will help.

SHINY!!!! Oh, I am laughing and gasping over here. I know I'm late returning to this thread but your bullet points on being an IT are hilarious and make me so glad I got back to this. I completely agree with the muscularity and hip bone issues, my pants still slide around a bit there isn't much to hold them in place (which is sad because I am not small by any stretch of the imagination). These are the primary reasons why I could not tell whether I was an IT or not.

Sarah Kay - I think you have the right instincts to feature your shoulders. A nice strong shoulder line and a structured top can help define your waist and or make your waist look smaller. I also agree with Shiny that fuller bottoms will be a better friend to you than skinny jeans or leggings because of the tendency to have that icec ream cone shape with tunics -- unless they are very structured in the shoulders bust and waist.
