I Just Can't Get Excited

About spring or spring clothes, that is. While its a balmy 25F (and yes, that feels warm right now. Sad indictment of living where I do), we have more cold advisories coming (days where before wind chill we won't break out of the single digits).

I just keep telling myself while I am wearing my fall clothes in September, others are feeling the same way about shopping for winter.

Here's hoping some of the good stuff sticks around until I can walk outside without my jacket rated to -40F.

Oh, way too hard to shop for spring wearing the winter spacesuit. Forget that.

Yeah...I just ignore spring fashion until April. After all, I can't wear it until June.

The downside is that I often miss out on items in my size.

The upside is I get what I get on substantial sale.

I am having a hard time believing that Spring is coming as well. On the plus side, I am getting A LOT of wear out of my Winter clothes.

So I don't know if this is the place to air this thought but I'm going to go for it.

Usually, Shopbop does a 20-25% off coupon in late February. It's my time to get new Spring merchandise, the stuff that sells out before it gets marked down. The things I really want. It's important to me because I like high quality things but tell myself I am not wealthy enough to pay full price. I want those $350-500 shoes with some price consideration, thank you very much.

This year it never happened! It could be they are reducing their coupons (they don't do very many to begin with -- only 3-4 times a year and then the coupons are valid only a few days). Or, my other theory is that it is so wintery that half of the country is not interested yet in purchasing Spring merchandise. I guess we'll see over the next month if they bring back their Spring coupon.

I also thought that there was less new Spring merchandise to look at when I was in San Francisco last week. We are having a warmer than usual Winter, but the only place where I noticed a lot of Spring merchandise was H&M.

I am with you Thistle. It has warmed up to -16C but was snowing most of the morning so I can't even think about spring/summer for a while yet. I am still considering looking for a new puffer to replace the one that the zipper died on when I got home from Mexico. It was my longest and warmest puffer. May it RIP with my will to shop for warm weather attire.

At least I am not alone I feel like I should be shopping as I know this is the time of the year with the best selection and most sizes, but I feel meh.

Like Suz, I won't be able to wear most of it until June anyway, but by September, I will be back into my fall clothes. I guess I will just enjoy the sales when they come!

No, you're not alone. I have a coat on order that I can wear for spring, but that's it. I really can't get in the mood. The coat is black, so it's not even that springy. Spring only lasts about two weeks in my neck of the woods anyway, so if I don't get any new spring clothes, it's not that big a deal.

YES. I hear you. Makes perfect sense.

That said, if you like Spring colours - now is the time to wear knitwear in wool and cashmere in those shades. They aren't around in the Autumn and Winter, and you might enjoy a little refresh.

I totally understand. The last times I spent any time in the stores, I was not excited. I haven't bought anything for spring, and chances are I won't be doing much spring/summer shopping this year. I feel like I did a lot last year. For instance, last week while looking in my closet for a pair of sandals to take to Cuba, I realized my summer shoe collection is looking pretty thorough. I really overhauled last year. Our spring at home is so brief anyway before we get into summer temperatures that it's not worth investing heavily in transitional clothing for me.

Honestly, the only thing that's exciting me right now is that I'll be in a tropical climate in just a few days and will finally get a break from multiple layers of socks and thermal underwear.

No, you're definitely not alone, Thistle. The next couple months are tough--we're SO eager for warmer temps, yet winter drags on and on. I like Angie's suggestion--do you have warm clothes in spring colors?

I think I will wear my lavender cashmere sweater and dove grey trousers

Perhaps my spring piece will be another warm snuggly sweater in aqua or mint.

You're not alone. I'm in CO. I appreciate the snow very much since it hopefully means a less scary fire season this year, but today, spring is very far away. It's much too snowy, icy, sloppy, and muddy, all at the same time, t o even consider light colors.

Oh Thistle! You will laugh to know I am having the opposite problem in Australia! I have moved from Sydney to Brisbane, where it is much warmer, for much longer. I was in the shops over the weekend, and the autumn/fall stuff is coming in, and I cannot get excited to even try it on, when I am still wearing singlets!

And this is why you book a trip to someplace warm right about now! To have a great incentive to shop for Spring clothes.

Last week I was in NC and so excited to leave my tall boots & puffer behind... but of course, the cold weather & snow followed me, and I regretted not having them. Next week we are on to Iceland and then to London. Been watching the weather closely. Pretty depressing that it's going to be a little warmer and less snowy in Iceland than here, but I've got it covered. London is more of a challenge - can't decide which coat to bring, the wool trench or the spring trench. Then next month it's Tampa (refreshed my maxi dresses via Old Navy) then San Diego.... I am sorry in advance if I bring the cold weather with me. It seems to be following me around.

Even in Texas this year locals are starting to complain a little about spring being late. We're usually in full planting mode by now and the starter plants (tomatoes and peppers mainly) are all inside looking a little lackluster. That said, I'm not exactly in a huge hurry to have summer temps either - and much of the US could certainly use a few weeks of rain before the dry kicks in.

I think I'd still try to buy anything that I thought I really wanted before things get picked over. I don't feel that I really need to add much for S/S so it will be mostly "wants" and not needs. Except for another pair of sandals and maybe another pair of shorts.

Yup. I am in total agreement with you this year. Every year it seems I go into a hibernation mode in Jan/Feb where I'm not interested in anything but hot beverages, sleeping, and knitting. Certainly not shopping and clothes. I bought a couple of bras and some socks but that's about it. This winter it's particularly bad because of the 100+ inches of snow we've gotten. I've only recently started to slowly begin to think about shopping again, but it's kind of just aimless internet browsing right now. I haven't been in a clothing store since maybe early January.

At the moment I just want it to warm up/ melt enough that I can wear some of my less-blizzardy winter clothes. Baby steps.

Cozy sweaters in springy colors are definitely in order! At this time last year, I bought a lavender Gap sweater and it did so much for my spirits. In fact, I'm wearing it today with navy pants and a cream scarf. It's my favorite winter/spring hybrid outfit.

We've had a strange winter -- plenty of days with frigid temps, only to get a short break of temps in the '30s and '40s before the polar plunge arrives again. I'm also not feeling motivated to shop for spring.

I realized I said WEAR instead of purchase in my comment, Thistle. I meant that it's a good time to buy warm knitwear in Spring colours at this time of year, because it don't exist in the Autumn - if that interests you.

Unfortunately I don't have any practical advice as we've had a abnormally warm winter and I'm fairly flummoxed.

Weather has been so unpredictable. As soon as I put on something( even a jacket) that is of a lighter weight, boom, it gets cold. I was having this discussion with someone that these manufacturers need to come up with some better fabrics of different weights that work more for layering. So, I hear ya. It feels like "50 different shades" of winter thus far.
