I really want to get a nice trench coat this fall, and have pretty much decided that I'd really like something non-black and non-navy. I can't see myself in beige either. The purple ones out this fall are really appealing.

Anyway, which of these two would be more flattering on a still plump body?

I'm not at goal weight yet, but really want a nicer trench coat this year. I did without one last year, as the navy one I had was too big.

In Colorado here, a trench really does come in handy - there are weird weather changes - it's not like it's always all wintery here. Plus, my hometown is Vancouver BC, and I visit there from time to time, as well as Seattle. Oftentimes, a wool winter coat is 'too much'. But then, I'll need one of those too. I'm thinking I'll get a good trench for now, and then get a good wool wintery type coat once I'm at goal.

So, which of those two would you think would be more flattering on someone with some pounds to go?

That one would be navy - it's half the price, but I was noticing it's a wee bit shorter than the other two I'm looking at from Nordstrom. Is navy blue boring?

I'm also on the trench coat hunt- have you read those posts? Angie was mentioning she has several clients in the Gallery coat and it runs big, just so you know. What I love about that one, besides the perfectly simple design, is that it has a heavier lining for cold weather and a hood. How many times have I wished for a hood when I had to dash in somewhere? Many times.

I hope you get a chance to try some on- when I did, I found out a classic trench is sort of awful on me, which surprised me.

Hi VC, I have the Gallery trench and I love it.
Of the other trench's, I wonder if the large lapels would be flattering? That is something maybe Angie will answer.
Sinead, what does a classic trench look like? Is it the kind with the flap over the shoulders, double breasted, like in the movies?

Yes, San, that's what I meant by classic trench. I've loved how they look, but now I realize I've liked them on people who are tall... have good shoulders... that's not me. Not sure, but that khaki color might be hard for most people to pull off.

Oh ya, the khaki color has always put me off of trench coats. It seems they were always that color and had some strange detailing. They just didn't seem to be for someone like me, but more for a private investigater in a movie. I am happy to have discoved through YLF so many different styles of trench coat.

I've never liked the 'classic khaki' trench coat much either. You've got me curious about the larger lapels on the other two, non-Gallery trench coats. I wonder if that's a plus or a minus. I also notice the Gallery trench has a separate lining, which could really come in handy if I'm putting off a winter coat purchase.

I do have an inexpensive black wool coat that is sort of ok - it's a bit big in the shoulders and through the bust/bodice, but I might be able to make do with it until I'm ready to get more of an investment coat. Thing is - a trench would be just the ideal thing. Yes, there are those colder days where I'd need a proper winter coat - but a trench is a lot more useful to me. I really missed having one last year.

Ack! I know I'm overdue for this.

I will work on it tomorrow for sure. To be honest, I'm a bit shy and embarrassed for a number of reasons. #1 reason? I desperately need a new haircut/hairstyle. #2 reason? I don't really have any clothes. (laughing a bit here). I wasn't kidding when I said that I should be featured on a "what not to wear" kind of show. Think: Mom jeans and ratty old polo shirts.

Meanwhile, I am excited about this place. I have a good feeling that YLF is going to help me go from 'Drab to Fab'.

I have some upcoming things to deal with - a trip to Las Vegas at Christmas, a possible business trip to Czech Republic, a cruise in the spring, and hopefully a trip back home to Vancouver. I'd really like to ...oh, I dunno, somehow make a 'wow' impression at the family reunion in Vegas over the Christmas holidays. Something better than jeans and t-shirts. I've dropped about a hundred pounds. Totally, totally lost when it comes to fashion.

Ok - enough of my angst.

Like I said, I'm very, very hopeful about YLF. (where is the embarrassed smilie/icon when I need one?)

I think that Tahari coat (the purple one at Nordstrom) is lovely, somehow being waist-defining without a belt.

Wow -- a hundred pounds! That is deeply impressive, and must also be somewhat daunting. You're in the right place for encouragement, support, and good advice.

Funny thing? I have parts of a wardrobe. Managed to get some skinny jeans that can only be tucked into boots. No tops at all. No coat, no sweaters - nothing. Oh, but I do have some rather 'out there' (for me) booties that I ordered. They came in yesterday. I have a bunch of new skirts. I'm still waiting on some new 'skinny' ( I think they may end up being more like straight legs) jeans to come in the mail this week.

Yes, 'daunting' is a very good word!

The Lola? That's my personal favourite as well. I just love the way it looks, I like the colour, and I like the fact that it isn't belted or bulky. I think maybe ...well, I'm going to get that coat, one way or the other.

editing to add: I really have no idea what size I am, so I'd best get down to the Nordstrom store in person to try it on.

I totally understand your angst, Sara. But not to worry, you are very safe here. I will personally keep it safe for you :0). There is zero tolerance for rudeness on YLF. In any capacity. Visuals are very helpful and the more you put into this forum, the more you will get out of it. If you start posting pictures with your challenges, we’ll be able to offer swifter and more accurate solutions. Make sense?

Yes, it totally makes sense Angie - I understand that it's very hard to offer up advice or suggestions without a visual. Every person is different, and it's kind of difficult to say one way or the other whether clothing item A or B is the 'right thing' without actually seeing the person.

editing to add: thank you Angie - I really do appreciate it. I have a really good feeling about this place, and I think very highly of your advice - it's the best I've come across. And believe me, I've read a ton of style books and blogs in an effort to sort of make myself over.

Sarah, I've always found that jackets with a waist "built into them" like this

are more flattering than the belted styles on me. Ones that you have to belt yourself just seem to highlight my lack of waist even further. I don't know if you are challenged by the same lack of waist as me Sarah, but just something to think about!

Gosh, we're back to coat shopping! Seems like the whole forum was doing it in earnest just a bit ago. Actually, I don't think I ever stopped because I still have a gap to fill. Time flies.

Anyway, can't wait to see pics. That's my favorite part, being able to really provide specific feedback and learn from others. But from the pictures, I prefer the Gallery trench. I think it has to do with the belt and the fabric. Maybe it's the sheen of the lola that throws me. That being said, I like the first one, too. The be all end all is the coat on your body, though. (I went through a BUNCH of coats before finding one.)

Congrats on your weight loss. I am in 100% support for achieving your "wow" entrance in Vegas.

Thanks again everyone. And I agree with you yublocka - I feel a bit 'iffy' about the belted styles. For me, belts seem to cause bunchiness and bulk. In a coat, at least.

As soon as I manage to get myself into some stores, I'll be sure to take my camera with me so I can take those fun dressing room pics.
