I was actually thinking about this as I was grocery shopping today. LOL I think that many people would look at my "statement" items and shake their heads. Being a SAHM, my "statement" pieces are somewhat subdued and not very exciting , I suppose.
Right now, one of my statement pieces is my pair of Van sneakers. I love them. My wardrobe would work just fine without them - but they add a little oomph ( and right now it is the only shoe that I can wear as my toe heals ) . On the other hand, I am going to buy the sweater below:

Though it is not in my essentials capsule, it is also not a "statement" in my mind. So I don't know what it is. : ) Though other places ( like the Vivienne Files ) refer to these as "add-ons" or " expanders". This would be an expander piece for me. I think that I like this expression. An "expander " capsule....
I consider all my scarves and jewelry "statement". They add that little extra "je ne sais quois " that make me feel a little more interesting and they make me happy. Just like my sneakers. It is unexpected, in a subtle way. Which makes me think : the cashmere sweater is essential for me : V neck, cashmere - but the color is "statement", a surprise. I love berry colors but my essentials are denim, grey, black ( and a navy blazer - always ). Now, the very small and subtle things may not seem "surprising" or "interesting" to others, but they are to me. hahahahahha. I love looking at my sneakers and going, " Wow, I forget the great subtle print. I love it ! "
I hope that makes some sense.
