I've been trying almost all the tricks listed, with a couple of exceptions. But to shake things up, the best thing is to take a little time and add the things you think are impossible. I've been amazed at how often combinations I never would have considered work, and really well too!
Yesterday, in my playing, I put a teal green (I don't know what to call the colour. Think teal blue, but tilted to the green side of the spectrum) cardigan on over my rust pants. Way over the top for conservative me. But my white summer scarf is like a magic wand: the floral print has three colours in it that are perfect chameleons: a red that will go with every red that's out there, and almost slate blue that pretends to be any shade of blue, and a khaki colour that calls out to all the browns. Tied that around my neck and it pulled them together.
I didn't wear it, because it wasn't weather-appropriate, but it really amazed me. I've also played with belts, and earrings. The point is to break your own rules, and then find a way to make it work.
