About your wardrobe and personal style

Hong Kong?

DH and I are in the midst of planning our next travel adventure. I need to take a week off in October, and we haven't traveled anywhere in awhile, so we have the itch. This trip will be without kids, since they will be in school.

This weekend while searching the travel sites for ideas, we saw some pretty good deals on Hong Kong, which surprised me because I figured it would be more expensive and out of our budget. It seems cheaper to go to HK than to most european cities. That's so tempting!

And of course, as soon as I saw these deals, I thought about Angie and how she rates Hong Kong as the number one style capital... so how can I resist???

We haven't booked yet but tell me more... if we go it will be for a week. Is that enough time for such a long distance (when we went to Japan we went for 10 days, to accomodate for jet lag).

What is the weather like in early October? (Ie., how to dress for the weather)

What is there to do besides shopping, since DH will only stand maybe one day of that?

Where is the best location to stay?

Once there, how does it rate for daily expenses (compared to say Paris)?

And, most importantly, what would I want to pack for such a trip? Do you think I have all the clothes already that I would need (that would be a factor in any travel decision, hee hee).

I can't answer any of your questions Shiny, do have a question of my own though: I'm 5 ft 8, will I fit into that extra suitcase?-)

Shiny how exciting!!! Can you please post some of the advice you get here as well??? I'll be in HK late Oct/early Nov either on way to/from China so I'll also be looking for tips. And if anyone has info on Beijing as well, would love to hear them!!!!

*bump* shiny did you end up getting some advice about honkers???

I'll echo Tam - I'd love any tips on HK and Beijing - Tam as well if you visit before me. I am likely to visit both within the next 12 months.

We have to make sure DH can take the time off, and then *hopefully* the deal we saw is still there. It's possible that it's not. And then we'll be back to the drawing board trying to figure out where to go. I don't want to get my hopes up until the tickets are booked. Will keep you posted!

Ok Shiny I'll be crossing my fingers for you. This is a good time of year to go though weather wise (not too hot!!) Any chance you'll be there around the 19th Oct? It'd be cool to meet up there!!!!

Sihaya when/were are you going? We are currently thinking HK -> Guilan -> Beijing over 2 weeks. Hopeing to get lots of cycling around the countryside in there!!!

Warning Angie, I'll be posting questions on finding "non-petite" clothes in HK soon. I always feel like I stick out like a sore thumb there!!

Tam - it will be my first time in both places if I do go. Both are dependent on work contracts coming through which is always a wild bet. HK likely in Jan or Feb. Beijing might even be this calendar year. I will post when I have more definite news. Your trip sounds like a lot of fun. How tall are you?

Well Sihaya I'll be crossing my fingers that the work oppurtunities pan out for you!!! What kind of work do you do?? I'm 5"8 so not massively tall, but its all relative. I'm more than one head size taller than the average crowd on the streets, so I get a decent view at least!!

It's official - we're going to Hong Kong, I just booked the tickets!

It took me longer than I would've liked, because this weekend my mother pointed out that perhaps HK is such a deal this year because back in July they were quarantining any travelers who walked off the plane with a fever. Which gave me pause (bad way to spend a holiday) but then I researched it and they are no longer doing that.

Then she obsessed over the possibility one of my kids could get the flu right before/during our trip. She is very worried about the flu this fall, and if you wonder why I am prone to my own anxieties, now you know!

At any rate, I bit the bullet and bought the trip protection, something I never do, but I had a promo code so it was 1/2 off, and it'll keep my mom quiet. LOL.

I will likely start another packing thread shortly, and a thread about bespoke tailors in HK...

That's fun! Which hotel are you staying in? Location is vitally important.

Langham Place in Mong Konk. I did research on TripAdvisor. It was number one rated- if you got a good deal, and we did. Raters said it was not typical tourist area - more authentic locale - which sounds like us.

Let me know if you think that will be good!
