Help with this top

This shirt was one of those "can't pass the good deal" purchases. The problem is that it has a back tie, and I am not sure what to to with it. The straps are quite long and they come out of side seams, so I could potentially remove them. I also thought I could wear it layered, and the tie is kind of in the way. Any thoughts on what I could do with the tie to make it less sloppy? The waistband is above my natural waist. The color is cooler grayish brown. I thought I could brighten it up with my turquoise necklace but I have misplaced it and can't find it

Hmm, tricky. I don't think this particular layering combo is flattering; it doesn't give you enough shape. But I wouldn't give up on trying to layer. Academichic just showed a very interesting way of using a dress belt by wrapping it over a cardigan. Wanna try that out? http://www.academichic.com/200.....ch-2009-2/

Otherwise, I'd consider removing the belt and instead wearing the shirt with a wide belt in a contrasting color.

Add a waistcoat? I think Tanya wore a longer shirt like this one with a waistcoat, and she looked great.

Tied in the back looks dated to me. I vote for a wide belt in a contrasting color or snake print in greys. That cropped cardi seems off. The shirt sleeves took too full for it.

How about layering a cami in a contrasting colour underneath, leave the shirt unbuttoned (coat style) and wear a matching wide belt on top of the shirt?

I would remove it and add a different belt, but then you'll have to belt it all the time because it isn't flattering without the structure of a belt. Or remove the belt and have it altered so it's more fitted without needing a belt. The waistcoat idea is the only one I personally find potentially appealing so far, but you can certainly try the others.

Marianne, I'm not sure what to tell you. I don't think the self belt adds that much to the shirt so I would be inclined to remove it all together. Like Maya points out, the downside would be that you'd have to belt it whenever you wear it. What about treating it like a shirt dress? You could wear it over leggings as well. I think you could wear a longer cardigan over it as well as long as you added the belt on the outside of the cardigan...I like the idea of a vest too. Let us know what you decide!

Thanks for the input! Hmm, it might not be a keeper. I like the idea of a vest but I don't think either of my vests would work with it. Wide belts don't really work for my body type.

Dani, I was thinking it could work like a spring equivalent of a sweater dress, but woven - a long casual top to wear over skinnies, sort of like a shirt dress. I would be interested in finding something that fits the bill, but a lot of the long woven tops I see are too voluminous.
