Q&A about individual items, ensembles, and wardrobe

Help me dress for a special evening! :-) (long and pic heavy!)

Tomorrow is our 2nd anniversary. DH is taking me to dinner. Where we are going is going to be a surprise. He did mention that it was going be a bit on the fancy side. After a little prodding, I was able to glean from him this afternoon that fancy meant tie or jacket for men. Which leads me to believe I have to dress in appropriate evening attire. This is one area I am completely clueless and hopeless - when it comes to dressing even semi-fancy. As far as I can tell I have nothing appropriate in my closet. The fanciest dress I have is the Adrianna Papell sheath I bought at the NAS. I had a half hour to spare during lunch so I tried a few dresses at Marshall's.
I was also able to make a quick stop at Express after work to check out the dressess.

The whole album.

This is a London Times dress. I love the color but the fit seems ok but not great.

Sangria dress. Again, I love the color but am not entirely happy about the fit on the top.

Adrianna Papell dress. This is my favourite of the lot. The fabric feels great, LOVE the neckline and the fit feels good too. But I feel the sleeves are a bit on the cappy side.

I wish I had taken a closer shot of the shutter type ruching on the dress.

Connected dress. This I found kind of meh.

All these are undoubtedly a bit too long, but I'll have the dress hemmed, should I buy one of the above.

This is the dress I liked best at Express:

On the model:

On me:

http://i273.photobucket.com/al.....ess2_3.jpg
http://i273.photobucket.com/al.....ess2_4.jpg

Please excuse the peeking bra and the chunky wedges! Those shoes are my highest wedges and the only ones that give me PPL with regular length jeans.

Do any of these dresses work? I am still not sure if I want to buy a dress or go the skirt and top route. I did bring home this skirt from Express as it was on sale and I had a coupon. I don't think I have a nice enough top to wear with this skirt. I will have some time tomorrow to check out some more options.

I would love some suggestions as this short notice has left me in a bit of a daze. Now, I wish I hadn't been putting off buying gumball pearls.

Thank you all SO much!

Wow Vani, you are a knockout. I actually like the London Times one best. I think it does fit you very well and the texture and color are lovely on you. But can you have it shortened easily, especially on such short notice?

If the sleeves of the AP dress bother you, and you have to hem it anyway, do you think you could have it made into a sleeveless dress? Or is that too much work again?

The Express dress is VERY va-va-voom. You do look great in it, and it doesn't appear to need any alterations. I think it would be a pretty safe bet once jazzed up with the right accessories. Do you have a LBD? Now might be a good time to get one. If the other two are too much trouble to alter, I would go with this one.

The blue dress is also lovely on you. What about the fit aren't you happy with? The sweetheart neckline is perfect.

I think the Connected dress is, as you say, meh. But I see potential in all the others. I guess it depends how much altering you can do on short notice.

I had similar reactions to Maya - I was very impressed with the London Times dress. The color is gorgeous on you, and the style and details are fab. It's a definite special occasion dress.

I liked the Adrianna Papell dress second best. The fit looks good on you.

The Express and blue dresses seemed good, but not great like the LT and AP ones. I agree that the Connected dress is so-so, I would rate it a no.

Also, you are gorgeous! You're going to have a fantastic anniversary dinner.

Maya, medusa, Thank you!!

I think my biggest issue with all the sleeved dresses have some sort of a cap sleeve. My arms are definitely not toned, and I have actually just gotten used to the idea of sleeveless being better for me than cap or cappish sleeves. Also, the London Times dress is so not me :-)

Maya, You read my mind! I was definitely going to try and get the sleeves altered on the AP dress if did buy it. Along with shortening it, of course. But not for tomorrow, for sure :-( I do not have an LBD and again, you read my mind about making that investment now. The AP dress is a great bargain at $60 and seems a lot more substantial than the Express dress. Hmm...

Congratulations on your anniversary! I took a look at the photos, and I think my favorites are the Adrienne Paparelle and the Express dresses. I was going to make the same suggestion that Maya did--can you get the cap sleeves removed from the AP dress and have it made into a sleeveless dress? I realize you might not be able to get that done in time for dinner tomorrow, but it might be more of a long-term solution if you want to purchase the dress.

I think the Express dress looks really great as is, and doesn't need any alterations.

Have fun at dinner--you'll look great!

You know, if you're going to get a LBD, I just feel like the Express one isn't special enough. Honestly, I know I sound like a broken record, but the cap sleeves in all of these really don't bother me. They are all fantastic dresses and, although I never get bothered by cap sleeves in the first place, I can't imagine anyone is going to be looking at them when the rest of you looks so good!

Have you shown hubby yet? He usually seems to have an opinion on these things :) Or is it a surprise?

Posted 6 months ago

My favs are also the AP and Express dresses. The Express dress would make a wonderful LBD you can dress up or down. I love the colors of the other dresses, but agree with you that there are some fit issues.

Posted 6 months ago

LOL, Maya, you know me so well! Yup, he has gotten to critique all dresses and likes the AP dress the best; does NOT like the ruffles on the London Times dress; does not care for the blue dress and thinks the Express dress makes me look wide. What can I say *rolling eyes* :-D

I actually do not mind the sleeves on the London Times dress or the AP dress but the Sangria dress poofs a little at the shoulders when I move my arms. Truth be told, the only time I like my arms is when they are covered till the elbow :-) Can you tell I'm warming to the AP dress?

The AP sheath from the NAS is def not special evening wear then?

I like the last dress the best- the black one. This is the only one that flatters your arms with the sleeveless cut, and it is the right length. Some of the others make you look a little pouchy from the side, and this one doesn't have that effect, either. I like the color of the first one, but the cap sleeve is not as nice.
Have a great time, whatever you decide!

Posted 6 months ago

EXPRESS one!

Posted 6 months ago

Remind me what the NAS one looked like? I totally remember commenting on it but I see to have forgotten what it looks like.

If you ask me, it looks like you have made up your mind (and so has hubby). I think it's so cute that he has so much input (and appears to have great taste). In my experience, most men either a) don't care or b) have totally useless/unhelpful/stupid advice or remarks ("it reminds me of the Stay Puff Marshmallow!" is a personal favorite).

Anyway, I think that dress looks great on you and I am not bothered by the sleeves.

Do report back on the big night. I'm curious to see where he takes you :)

I haven't looked at any responses Vani, but hands down the FIRST sleeveless dress. (London Times). It’s KILLER. I mean hot, hot, HOT KILLER! Which does hubby like best? He has excellent taste :0)

You are 100% GORGEOUS! Happy Anniversary!

Posted 6 months ago

Angie, hubby didn't like the London Times dress (which was my favorite too). He likes the black AP dress.

(Sorry Vani, just thought I'd answer the question so you get a response faster!)

Posted 6 months ago

:-D Thanks Angie, Maya, Khris, Cathy, Steph, rena for your wonderful feedback!

Angie, Maya, I think the dress will just take some getting used to for the 2 of us. I liked it instantly after putting it on. But looking at the pictures, all the ruffle-i-ness is what I am pretty sure is a bit of a barrier to cross. I think I was expecting something more like this (where Sarah just rocks this dress) where the ruffles/shutters are more "refined/understated"? Oh and the dress Sarah is wearing is also an AP dress, which explains the difference. I see a pattern here, or a conspiracy of sorts :-D

I will bring home the 2 dresses tomorrow and take it from there I think.

Angie, I'm curious, what is the dress you liked second best?

Oh, and what acessories would you suggest for the pink dress? I think I can manage with the blacks, but pink I will need help with.

Posted 6 months ago

Since the color is the "hero" in an outfit with the pink dress, I would stick with metallics or neutrals for shoes and accessories. Pewter or silver would look nice with pink. And simple with the accessories: cuff or large bangle, choker-length necklace.

Posted 6 months ago

Vani, do you feel the pink dress needs shortening? Maybe removing just one tier of ruffles would make it feel less overwhelming. What exactly is it that hubby doesn't like?

Posted 6 months ago

Cathy, you are so right. I think I can manage the jewelry. I will need to scout out shoes and a clutch.

Maya, I already tried getting him to go into a little detail about what he doesn't like about the dresses that he doesn't but he says he can't wrap his head around it. Me thinks he thinks it a little bit more girly than what he associates with what I usually wear. Nevertheless, I just think it is a matter of showing it to him in person, with the accessories and all. I'm sure he will like the end result :-) And I think you are right about reducing some ruffles when I get the dress shortened.

Thanks so much ladies, you are all so helpful and generous with your time! I'll try and post pictures before we leave tomorrow.

I have nothing constructive to add, but happy anniversary! My favorites are LT and AP dresses, even though they are very different. You look gorgeous in both.

Posted 6 months ago

I like the LT and the AP dress the best as well, but think the AP dress is less likely to date which is v. important if it is the only formal dress in your wardrobe. I think the alterations you have described would make it your go to dress for a special occasion and you would have unlimited variations of accessories to pair with the dress.

I hope you have a wonderful evening with your hubby.

Posted 6 months ago

The AP dress! Gorgeous ... and you can't dismiss your first impression, IMHO.

Posted 6 months ago

Wow Niva!!! What a killer body you have! eh eh

Love the first dress (that color is great for you!) but also loved your pic.. great timeless dress!

Posted 6 months ago

Thank you for the thoughtful wishes everyone :-)

RJ, Cricket, You both make a good point. Which now has me thinking I should probably spend a good amount of time searching for THE LBD that will be my go to for all ocassions. The LT dress isn't expensive or up to par quality wise to warrant making it a go to dress. The moment I put on the AP dress it felt like luxury. I'm still torn. I guess I will bring both home and style them and see which I like best. But I cannot dismiss Angie's voice in my ears :-D

rute, you are too kind :-D And you just made my whole week! Thank you!

Posted 6 months ago

Vani, I loved the LT dress best as well, but if it doesn't feel right to you maybe you should go with the AP one instead.

Posted 6 months ago

congratulations on your anniversary!! I know this is too late but I hope you got the LT dress to play with later, if not on your big night. I can see it working with black strappy shoes and dark jewelry...as well as silver or gold or even turquoise-y accessories...its such a yummy color on you! i'm a bit amazed at the selection that your marshall's carries....mine has nothing nearly as good.

Posted 6 months ago

Vani, I'm glad I clicked on this thread! I love my AP dress a lot. It feels like a million bucks. Here's my thought:
I love the pink dress on you the very best, but I'm wondering if you ought to go down a size? Do they have one so you can compare? The one I got is a size FOUR and I usually take a size 8 in AP dresses, maaaybe a 6. I think this dress was cut big, but I like wearing it more fitted because I think it makes it more elegant.
But what do I know. ;)

Posted 6 months ago

I see that I confused two of the dresses... I like the pink LT dress the best, but maybe sized down?
I like the AP dress on you if you can make it sleeveless.
I was encouraged (back when I bought my dress) to avoid black, and I'm glad I did. I felt very special at my Valentine's Dinner with my DH - I was the only woman not wearing black or red. It made a statement and I loved it.

More great ideas, thanks Srujana!

medusa, I think Sarah hit the nail on the head. I went back today to Marshall's and tried on a smaller size. For whatever reason, I like this much better. Almost like the ruffles aren't as ruffle-y anymore. I like it a lot now!

Sarah, So glad you commented. I just cannot get over how beautifully you wear the purple AP dress. It looks fantastic on you! I did size down and like the fit much better. It may not be noticeable to everyone but I can see a difference. I also actually found another AP dress, in black, today (Marshalls keeps surprising me). The bottom half is similar to the dress you have, and the top is matte jersey with a cross bodice and is sleeveless. I liked it a ton too so I brought home also. But I think the pink dress is really growing on me the more I think about it :-D I wish I could keep both dresses!

I didn't have much luck with shoes and clutch at Marshalls or Target. I keep mentioning these 2 stores only since they are a half mile away from where I work. Don't have the time to get to the mall.

My collection of shoes is not offering me many options:
http://s273.photobucket.com/al.....G_3969.jpg
This pair I have on (I'm the one in cream in the center turned to the side) is not in the above photo.

Any suggestions?

Oh, and I *think* this is where we are going...after piecing together what DH has been telling me. Am I headed in the right direction? Sooooo many questions, sorry!!

I just want to let everyone know how grateful I am for all your help and feedback!

Posted 6 months ago

Hm, the shoe collection link didn't work. I think the pair you're wearing in that photo are lovely. Can you try those with the pink dress? I'm so happy the smaller pink is working better for you. :)
What clutches do you have, if any? What time is your dinner tomorrow? You should be able to order a clutch from Zappos or Endless and have it on your doorstep tomorrow. They have pulled through SO many times for me last-minute.
Lovely floral clutch:

Grr, I posted prematurely, but you can go to Endless.com and put in your criteria. I found 18 pages of clutches. Are new shoes in the budget too?
Are you 100% decided on which dress?

Posted 6 months ago

Sarah, You are an angel! I love all the clutches you posted, esp the Jessica Mclintock roses clutch and the Sondra Roberts snakeskin clutch. Unfortunately there isn't any time as the dinner is tonight :-( I posted the dresses last night as DH told me about it only earlier yesterday. He apparently didn't imagine I wouldn't have anything to wear as I have been shopping "a lot more than usual" :-)

The only clutches I have are something very similar to http://www.endless.com/Regale-.....le%20satin that I bought eons ago and a faded snakeskin embossed Fossil clutch that is more smart casual than formal. Unless I've forgotten something.
