Help me analyze prints: interesting or meh

Since I started my wardrobe maintenance with the help of ClosetSpace (app) and my own notes from 2012-14, I've had quite a few insights. (May make a post about some later.)

For now, my question now is why the print on the dress (#1) appeals so much to me while the tee (#2) just feels a bit meh. Should I donate #2?

Both prints are summery/tropical. The fit of both items is fine.

I would say that first print seems more dramatic and with black panels it is easier to combine with other black pieces in your closet. Second is more casual and summery.

H- to my eye, particularly with your styling, print 1 reads more abstract and current, with a bit of edge. Print 2 reads more generic and a little less today. It seems the first one inspires you more; they are totally different pieces, though both are prints. Letting the second one go may make sense. I especially like what you did with the first look.

Thank you, anchie and Eliza! I really think you are into something. 50% of my wardrobe is black and it has always been my FFB colour. The tee is also very casual.

I have more solids or stripes on tees and like the simple and classic look. It somehow feels less cluttered. Though I really enjoy prints on others and got the idea that I should have a print tee.

The black and aqua colors stand out on the dress and the diagonal black section is interesting and bold. The shirt's background color looks beige in these photos, which many people find difficult to feel great in.

You may also enjoy the higher contrast of the first one... the second is lower, with the beigey background and busier pattern.

This is also a very good list to have in mind when shopping (though I'm SYC) and wardrobe editing.

I would also prefer the print in nr 1 anytime possible:-), nr 2 is much more flat and casual -and would only wear it for camping or lounging if having them both:-).

The first print is more dramatic. You may also like the geometry. Before giving up on it, try the second top with black bottoms, since you like to wear black.

Thinking of what Joy said and your stated preference for black: is it possible that the tee is just too high-contrast (as worn) for your style?

I actually think it's the cut of the tee because I like both prints equally! Sometimes even the exact same
pattern appeals to me in one style and not another. Dunno, just a thought...

My first thought was like the others. The first is edgier. I like Joy's idea to see if you can wear black with #2. And/or look to add some edge somewhere else in your outfit if edge is what you are looking for.
It also might be fun to add a colored bottom piece if you have one. Or try it with a jeans, or a skirt.
