Help! Caught by surprise ... - YouLookFab Forum

I am in the middle of a business trip through Norway & Spain and have an extremely packed schedule. Some of you may have seen my previous post regarding my marine biology presentations.

Today I received a surprise invitation to attend a nice event at an elegant banquet hall. There will be dinner, speeches, Q&A and likely a dance party afterwards.

As a marine biologist, I was expecting to spend time in the field, in a lab and at an aquarium. Thus most of the clothing I brought with me is casual. I only brought some nice clothes for photos at the very end of my trip when business had been taken care of. I can probably have time to get my hair set but it is unlikely I will have time to do clothes shopping, due to my busy work schedule.

Is it possible to make any "nice" outfits out of these pieces I have in my luggage?

Here are the possible combinations I have thought up. Do any of these combinations work? ..... Do you have any other combinations I can make up with what I have in my luggage?

Choice A
Animal Print Top (1) + Leather Skirt (8) + Tights (9) + Black Boots (6)

Choice B
Red Blouse (2) + Leather Skirt (8) + Tights (9) + Black Boots (6)

Choice C
Blue Maxi Dress (4) + Uggs Clog Boots (7)

Choice D
Black Long Dress (5) + Tights (9) + Black Boots (6)

I would go with choice D. Do you have another belt? That is all it would take. Did you bring any scarf? With the black dress, you can really let center stage to accessories.

Black long dress with animal print blouse over it-- tan boots! Add the necklace if it doesn't mess with the necklines too much and get your hair did.

ohhh. sorry to be a spoiler, but to a banquet the shoes don't seems to be appropriate..
I like the blue dress. Can you buy gold inexpensive medium heel sandals?

@Krishnidoux - I do have another belt which I use for my jeans ...... I don't have a scarf but I do like your creativity in dressing up the black maxi with accessories. Thank you!

@Elly - What a WONDERFUL idea!!!!! Black dress with the animal print blouse over it. I tried that on in front of a mirror in my hotel room and that looks good. Thank you so much!

I played around with the long necklace and it messes up my neckline. That's okay ..... my co-worker might be able to lend me one of her short bead necklaces

I also like your idea of pairing the black dress with the tan clog boots, it does provide a fun contrast in colours

@Jen W - I'm so glad to have people like you and Elly here. The fact that you also think it is good gives me a lot of confidence in this outfit for the party.

@Rachylou - I tested Elly's idea in front of the mirror. It does look good - yay!

@Alana - Thank you ...... it's always fun to get to play around with pieces you already have and all of a sudden go "whoa, I never knew this can be created"

@Rute - Thank you for the comment. I love to how others view this outfit. I have seen people wearing high heeled boots for dressy occasions like semi-formals or upscale Christmas parties. Tan clog boots have a high heel but the design does look casual. Black boots by Guess have a wedge heel but the leather does make them look dressier. If I were to stick with what I have, which of these two pairs do you think I should wear to the event?

I see that Rute brought up the topic of footwear. Those black wedge boots is sexy hot! Would the long black dress totally cover them up? Perhaps you can go with the shorter leather skirt and animal print top because such cute boots should be visible instead of hidden.

I am worried about the boots only because your feet may be very hot. If that's not an issue, I love the idea of the cognac boots--book end the leopard print and it looks oh so chic.

@Noro - I agree, the black wedge boots do look really cute! In fact, since I purchased them, they seem glued to my feet because I love how cute they look with any outfit I wear. The black dress is long and goes to my ankles, thus they would cover up these boots. Thank you for taking the time to give me some advice and to leave a comment

@Alana - The tan / cognac boots are by Uggs with their famous natural fur lining which amazingly does keep warm in the cold and keep cool when hot. I'm glad you think that look is good, it sure gives me confidence wearing it when people on a fashion website thinks it is okay

Being caught by surprise is always rough, at least for women! For guys, they can just throw on a nice shirt, nice pants and they are set.

Choice A and Choice D look very good. The animal print top and leather skirt is more edgy while the long black dress looks classier.

Rute said that for a banquet or elegant occasions, sandals are more appropriate. I love in a hot area so it might be biased but I see sandals for all dressy occasions too. Are boots ever appropriate for dressy occasions?

@Olivia - I agree, when it comes to getting dressed for events, guys have it much easier then us women, however, I believe that we have a lot more selection and choice then guys, so getting all dressed up is a lot more fun for us

I am surprised that you and Rute find that high heel boots aren't appropriate for dressy occasions as I do see dress boots at a lot of fancy Christmas parties, new years gala events, etc, at least here in Germany. Perhaps I should start a new thread on this topic as you've peaked my curiosity on whether they are appropriate or not ........
